I receive no compensation of any kind for my review, I bought this phone for personal use. I got tired of large and larger phones that beckon you to spend your days staring at them. I wanted to get back to simpler things and have a phone that doesn't try to be a surrogate for what is really important in life. If you need to constantly look at Facebook, post all day on Twitter and waste away the days watching videos, this is probably not a good choice for you. If you need good communications, an Android based folding phone that does everything other phones do when you need it and want to wear regular clothes (IOW- not cargo pocket clothes) then this phone should work great.
The finish is very nicely done. While it doesn't have a metal body it looks elegant. The back is black while the front has a moire style image embedded under the clear finish. The back is almost fingerprint proof and while the front can show fingerprints they aren't very obvious so at the end of the day you aren't left with a smeary looking phone.
A word on the folding design. You can decide if you want the phone to answer calls when you open it and terminate the call when closing it. The alternative is to use on-screen virtual buttons just like every other Android based phone. I changed mine to use on-screen buttons because the one feature lacking is a small display on the front of the phone to let you see the number or contact calling you. If that one feature were included using only the folding feature to answer and terminate calls would be so very convenient.
When you unfold the phone you're presented with a really high end looking keypad with gold outlines and large and clear keypad identifications. Pressing the buttons reveals a nice tactile feel so you know when you've pressed a button. There are some dedicated keys for the camera (YES!!!) , one to call up social media of your choice (like a video calling app), messaging and a sim card selector. Since this phone can accept 2 service provider sim cars plus one memory card being able to choose which service provider is active without using the setting menu is really nice. Of course you can configure the phone to use both sims are the same time, nice if you have one number for public use and one for private use. With some carriers, adding a second number is very inexpensive and it shares calling and texting limits. Note that if you use 2 carrier sims at the same time, the second one is not 3 or 4G but limited to 2G which means calling and texting.
The display is very clear despite being a half HD resolution. Remember, this phone has a 3.8" display so it will seem very clear and quite easy to read and I am finding that reading glasses are becoming a frequent thing but I can easily read the display without glasses. The touch screen works well and using the on-screen keyboard to enter text is painless. I found that I was able to enter text as fast and as accurate as with a 7" phone or even larger tablets. My trick is to set the on-screen keyboard on the high contrast setting. The predictive entry feature works accurately and reduces typing quite a bit. If you use the physical keypad for texting you actually have as much available screen space as a phone with a 5" or larger display because on-sccreen keyboards typical take up a third or more of the display space.
After you get the phone, just charge it first as you should with any battery powered device. It turns on quickly. Go to settings, get your wifi connection going and manually get the update already waiting for you. Let that update take place and then you're ready to go. The playstore is immediately available and you can download the apps you want. Video calling apps work fantastic and the display works well, just turn the phone to landscape and the video looks as well as any other phone. I found the phone so much easier to hold than a regular smartphone. When you hold a regular smartphone especially the phones with edge to edge displays, your finger tend to wrap over some portion of the display and for video calling you end up holding it with a finger and thumb which is a pain on longer calls. With this folder you can easily set it down in landscape and conduct the video call, just set it down with the side control buttons on the top side or they have a tendency to activate by mistake.
The camera is an 8 and 5 megapixel and for anything other than professional needs it works well. As you know, it is the quality of the lens and software, not the pixel count that make the biggest difference. It can take HD video just fine. Since this isn't a $1000 phone it doesn't have the high end sophisticated image stabilization features so keeping a steady hand is important. The camera lens is located on the part of the phone you normally hold in portrait mode so you do need to be careful your hand doesn't cover the camera. it's quite easy to block the camera. The flash LED is pretty bright. The quality of the pictures is about average for 2018 so for casual pictures and most uses its just fine. Using the dedicated camera key makes taking the pictures super easy so you can eliminate one icon from the screen.
Getting the sound to your liking might take some configuration as from the box it seems set for voice and can be rather tinny for music. The sound is very clear, the speaker is on the back and can be quite loud on the highest setting. In "settings" you can configure the quality of the sound in a lot of ways so adding base or treble is easy as are preloaded configurations for voice, music etc.
Network throughput is really good and the first thing you might want to do is load of the Lighting Browser available on the Play Store. That brower is super fast and uncluttered and makes Internet surfing much easier. I have a detached garage about 90 feet away from the house and got a strong wifi signal there, inside the garage as well as much father out on the property. Bluetooth also works well although if the phone is in your back pocket and you are driving, bluetooth connection to your car's audio system isn't as strong as some other phones. It still works but your car's system might inform you of a low strength connection. I paired the Folder 2 with serveral tablets, my vehicles's Bluetooth, a bluetooth Work Force hearing protector and a Plantronics Legend ear piece and they all worked well with the Folder 2's bluetooth connection. Pairing was fast and reliable.
The Folder 2 does have bluethooth, wifi and usb tethering capabilities and on both bluetooth and wifi, using the Folder 2 as a mobile hotspot everything went well. Naturally the WiFi hotspot deature works mush better. Sending files back and forth via Bluetooth was painless as it was for WiFi Direct.
Battery life is decent. Going a full day isn't a problem with mixed use. The battery is small because the phone isn't large so you aren't going to get a week long charge although using it as mostly just a phone with some email and light video calling it can last a few days. No doubt, companies like Anker will offer backpack style extended batteries shortly. Even with a double battery pack the phone won't be large enough to make a bulge in pockets. That is the real benefit here, the phone fits into the smallest pockets and sitting down with the phone in your back pocket doesn't feel like having a hard cover book back there. In front pockets you might forget it's there. Having switched from a very large 7" phone on more than one occasion I found myself looking for my phone only to realize it was in my pocket, it's that unobtrusive.
If you get an extra battery until extended batteries are available, swapping out the battery is super easy. You pull the back off from the small pry point and take the discharged battery out and press in a new one. It takes mere moments and in less than 30 seconds you are back in business.
In summary, this is a great phone for the intended purpose. It isn't a glues to the screen type phone where you need to be always "on" for the public arena of social media. It is perfect for those who are tired of carrying around glass or metal slabs that need pockets the size of books to hold their phone. It can do anything other phones can do and for some functions like video calling, taking casual pictures, quick access to the web or email and messaging it actually works better. There will some some transition period but once you get used to the freedom a smaller phone format provides you'll wonder how you ever got caught up in the bigger and bigger phone rat race.
Once it was fully configured we started encountering more subtle problems:
The phone had no reception in many places where my old phone worked (also a $200 phone from a year ago). Even standing at the window inside buildings where I've made many cell phone calls I often had no signal at all.
There were many times when I had a cell signal but where data was not working, preventing my use of the internet on the device.
It was very rare to be able to sustain a phone call for more than 3 minutes. Most phone calls would drop repeatedly every few minutes. This grew very annoying, especially when the calls seemed to work fine after calling back.
Other than the phone being unusable for phone calls and internet usage, the physical characteristics of the device were great. It flipped open and closed seamlessly, and the buttons seemed to be high quality. It was also really cool to have Android on a flip phone. Had it been possible to use the phone for phone calls it would have been exactly what I was looking for.
