I bought this Mason Shaker set back in February during a daily deal sale on Amazon for my husband's birthday (4-10) yesterday. I also purchased their book "shake", which is fantastic btw. The stuck cap/strainer issue is STILL very real folks. I was aware if this problem when I ordered but thought surely they would have recognized this issue and dealt with it before being offered in a 'Today's Lightning Deal' on Amazon. Possibly shipping the unit as separate pieces to begin with. I guess not! We spent a good part of yesterday and this morning trying everything to separate them, while only using a soft washcloth, rubber gripper, and the water frozen/boiling method (and WD40). Amazon reviews and YouTube videos didn't help. I've sent two emails to www.masonshaker.com and have yet to receive a response regarding a solution.I know the value (27.99 +tax) of this set is in the dishwasher safe stainless steel cap, (gasket-less) inner strainer and outer seal ring. I do enough of my own pickling to have various sized jars to replace the 32 oz one that came with this. We'd really like to keep what we have, just want to get the cap/strainer apart. NOT happy! The 1 star rating I know is severe, however, this mason style shaker is absolutely useless without the 'use' of the strainer. I will update my rating and opinion upon a resolution...***UPDATE:*** Day 3/ I'm on a mission! *MY SOLUTION* see photo, it says it all...After repeatedly applying everything above for 2 days (hot/cold water and WD40) and with no response from my emails to the company. I finally used a plumbers wrench 'over' a rubber gripper so as not to damage or disfigure the thin metal cap. SOLUTION: Assemble the entire unit, giving you a more secure hold. Place the rubber gripper over the end cap to cause some soft friction while ever-so-gently tighten the wrench around the gripper/cap and rotate while at the same time pulling, as if you were unscrewing a lid. You'll hear a mild grainy release. Hope this helps :)Upon further inspection, the stainless steel used in general is rather thin. I've decided to maintain my rating at 1 star as my solution was a success, however, the glass rim and inner metal strainer doesn't create enough of a seal to keep it from leaking when shaking a mixed drink. Requiring me again to go out of my way, this time to a hardware store in the hopes of finding a very thin rubber gasket to fit inside of the strainer rim, allowing enough thread left on the jar for the outer rim seal to grab. Wish me luck.... :/This shaker is way too expensive for the time and frustration it has caused to get it to work properly. As is, I would not recommend this P&W brand of Mason Shaker to anyone. The designer/engineer(s) of this shaker need to go back to the drawing board. jmho.***UPDATE:*** Day 4I received an email from Mason Shaker and they offered a replacement (+1 star for communication) So far I've been to three local hardware stores and have not found a proper fit for a thin rubber gasket. Still looking...***UPDATE:*** 1 Week laterWe just received and used the 'replacement' shaker, shipped direct from masonshaker.com and everything works just fine (+1 star). The cap is easily removable and there is no leaking from the rim. There is, however, an obvious re-tooling in this current 'newer' design. The height and width dimensions in the cap and strainer areas are minutely smaller (used a digital caliper). Just an FYI, newer IS better.Amazon shaker (original version) *www.masonshaker.com shaker (newer version) *****
