Squeak: A Balloon Animal Omegaverse Tale (Squeakverse Book 1) Kindle Edition

3.6 3.6 out of 5 stars 1,758 ratings

A dedicated art student at her local community college, Poppy practically lives inside her sketchbook. Drawn to the distracted crowds of the local zoo, her planned day of anonymous figure-sketching is interrupted by the charming Sebastian - and his brooding, borderline-rude friend Keane. Little does she know the two have a twisted secret that defies imagination - and the pressure on both of them is increasing by the day. As an intricate plan takes shape to secure their freedom, the twists and turns they face - and a pair of very intriguing knots - might just unwittingly tie Poppy to both of them, forever.

Squeak is an menage (m+m+f) balloon animal shifter omegaverse novella with (artistic takes on) OV designations and omegaverse-specific concepts like knotting, heats, ruts, nests, mate bites, bondings, and more. There is a brief (non-main-character) death at the very end. There is discussion of past violence and sexual compulsion/slavery, but it’s all occurred by the time the story starts. MM relationships do not need a warning, but consider this your heads up that the MCs are together, as they often are in my books - this story is polyamorous / polyam. If I’ve missed mentioning any content considerations you feel should be in this list, please let me know! The safety and comfort of my readers always takes precedence.

An unapologetic book-huffer and devourer-of-stories, Vera Valentine has carried on a torrid love affair with the written word for nearly all of her 40 years. Grown in the diner-laden wilds of the New Jersey Pine Barrens and transplanted to North Carolina, she lives with her husband, eight cats, and two dogs, most of whom are house trained. An avid fan of the Paranormal 'Why Choose?' / Queer Polyam genre, she initially tossed her author hat into the ring in September of 2021. Since then, she's applied her pen to more than a dozen books full of spicy romance, angst, and dry humor, including fear-feeding cryptids, Easter bunny aliens, and omegaverse balloon animal shifters.

A self-professed chaotic capybara, Vera can usually be found spending too much time on social media, chilling with fellow authors, or scribbling down plot bunny ideas in her trusty paper sidekick, the Bad Idea Book™.

This was free for stuff your kindle day recently and curiosity demanded I read it. LOL It was just as weird and bonkers as you’d imagine (seriously, did I ever think I would read a balloon shifter Omegaverse lite romance novella?!) It’s a super quick and unique read that doesn’t make the most sense at times, but parts were surprisingly wholesome and sweet. Kudos to the author for the creative anatomy choices and use of breath ;) Because it’s a novella there isn’t much character development, but I liked everyone and this was a fun read. I do wish there had been more on page interactions with all 3 main characters though (we’re told briefly about their fun times, but only get an on page MM and a MF scene). Also, the ending wraps up very, very quickly and the big bad our characters have been trying to escape is dealt with in just a handful of sentences. I see there’s a “squeakquel” though and I’m helpless to resist it. LOL

When your friends start talking about romance novels with doors, pillows, and now balloon animals, you start to worry about yourself when you in turn are sucked in and are totally invested in the story!

Easily 4-4.5 stars! This is a duology, but Squeak comes in at less than 100 pages and easily devoured in an hour or so. I’m now completely hooked on this story!

We follow balloon animal shifters Keane and Sebastian on their journey to break free of their captor and find the sigils to keep them in their shifted human form. Poppy is an art student who is completely drawn to the guys while out at the zoo. She’s highly attracted to them and they in turn, are drawn to her. The why is best part.

The MM spice was delicious (and makes you crave funnel cakes) and the MF action is just as steamy! Squeak is a fast-paced, omega-verse with a few surprises and an interesting take on shifting and mating. Poppy and the guys learn somethings about themselves and what may be in store for them next.

When the past comes to face the trio, Poppy is ready to protect what is hers. I’m thoroughly intrigued for book 2!

Oh my latex! I kind of love this gloriously bizarre short story. It's a fun twist on Omegaverse with lots of laugh out loud moments, angsty action, a race against time, and a dollop of sweet, steamy goodness. There are two male, alpha-esque, balloon animal shifters and one female, omegaish, human as the main characters. I loved the misunderstanding of what the men needed, versus what the female main character thought.

Sebastian and Keane are fascinating. Their predicament as bewitched balloons is taut as the clock ticks towards their deflation. The villain lurks in their background, and makes a brief appearance. I wish that big conflict had been expanded, although the climax was pretty satisfying.

I love Poppy. She's an art student who enjoys the zoo and drawing the animals and people. Her naivety is hilarious as she learns about these two magically delicious men.

I especially enjoyed the puns! It took me a while to get into this story, but the puns were flying, floating, and bouncing around, so I kept going until the pace picked up. I am SO going to read the squeakquel.

Also, there are a bunch of typos and grammatical errors. It was a little distracting, but it didn't burst my reading bubble.

The second half of the book felt rushed but it was interesting! The first party almost felt show and then everything happened all at once.

That was a hilarious and sexy romp that I didn’t even know I needed. How wonderfully creative and deliciously depraved.

This was a delight in creativity, cuteness, and raunchy spice. I love reading something totally new and adventurous and this was hot and hilarious at the same time. I love a loving group relationship and this was well done.

The idea is fascinating but it stops being “show” and switches to a really rushed “tell” after the first sexy encounter. Then it’s not good until the end.

I liked “Unhinged” by this same author because it’s so deliciously silly and I was hoping this would be a similar level of spicy-ridiculous but it’s not.

Better than expected. Although I must say the ending was a bit (a lot) rushed which contrasted with the well paced and Nicky writing beginning and middle part. But generally it was very entertaining to read and well written.

This one popped up on a book blog I follow with the words “well this one is just… different”.
Well, that was all the siren call I needed because of you follow my reviews you will know I like to find the weird and different kinda stories to read 😂
This is definitely different, at the same time it wasn’t a bad read, in fact I actually wanted it to be a bit longer (don’t we all 😉😂).
If you are looking for something outside the norm then this is just that

3.0 out of 5 stars Knot so Squeaky
Reviewed in Australia on November 16, 2023
"Squeak" by Vera Valentine is like stepping into a whimsical kaleidoscope of oddities. This book is a rollercoaster ride through a world bursting with eccentric characters and peculiar events that somehow 'knot' together into a surprisingly satisfying tale. Valentine's writing style is as quirky as the story itself, which might be both its charm and its stumbling block. While the narrative's offbeat nature delivers a sense of delightful peculiarity, it can also feel a tad scattered, making it a bit challenging to keep pace. However, if you're up for an unconventional adventure and enjoy peculiar storytelling, "Squeak" might just hit that oddly satisfying spot for you. It's a short read that, despite its quirks, manages to leave a lasting impression.
