Aberrant Monsters (New Blood: Eldritch Blues Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 1,312 ratings

Evicting a monster is no easy feat. Especially when the monster lives inside you.

I’m a rift walker, one of a handful of humans able to step into a world of monsters and arcane magic. We follow three simple rules:
  • Never step into the eldritch realm after sundown.
  • Never stay for more than an hour
  • Never, ever bring anything back

I broke all three rules.

Now my body is host to a psychotic aberration who materialises after sundown to haunt me in the flesh. Flesh arranged on a body made for sin, despite its monstrous proportions.

Telarion delights in tormenting me with his deep grumbling voice, and arrogant demands.
He wants out. He wants to be free, and I’m totally on board with finding a way to evict him.

But the Supernatural agency governing Eldritch activity have other plans for us.

They want us to work for them, hunting down other eldritch horrors. In return, they’ll refrain from exterminating us and find a way to separate us instead.

But the clock is ticking, because the longer we’re connected, the more I’m changing, and I’m afraid…Afraid that by the time they find a solution, it might be too late.

I might already be a monster.

A Paranormal Urban Fantasy with an MF romance.

Debbie Cassidy lives in England, Bedfordshire, with her three kids and very supportive husband. Coffee and chocolate biscuits are her writing fuels of choice, and she is still working on getting that perfect tower of solitude built in her back garden. Venom meets Jessica Jones, then add romance
This is like if Venom and Jessica Jones had a baby and added romance. From the very beginning, this story starts off with action. I was honestly blown away at the world building. I was never confused and always excited to learn more. The different monsters were very interesting and detailed perfectly.I looove love love August and the monster inside her. Their interactions were so good. A push and pull, conflicting feelings towards each other. I kept wanting to pop August on the head for not realizing certain things about that relationship. This story even has amazing, funny side characters.I blew through this book and instantly wanted to start book 2!

Debbie Cassidy is quickly becoming a new favorite and I am THRILLED that I found her.

Her writing is always an utterly captivating, comforting, welcome experience, and while this book is no different, it takes it to a whole other level. I've never had so many questions, so many mysteries that my mind is constantly buzzing over, racing to figure it all out before anything is revealed. I am very much looking forward to learning more about Telarion and what/who he is/was, Quentin especially, if Telarion and August will be separated and if we should even actually want that after all, and what the heck happened to her mom? I have some tasty theories, and with Debbie, I'm sure it will be supremely satisfying when everything is slowly pieced together.

Ah, just such a good book! I could go on, but I'd honestly rather dive into book #2 lol. Oh, I will add, I wasn't crazy about the monster romance fad, but this book makes it amazing. And there are SO MANY magical creatures/monsters that it really starts to feel like monsters aren't monsters at all, they're just more magical creatures that we've already come to love (shifters, etc. as an example).

Amazing, fantastic, enthralling. Another masterpiece from an author I highly recommend stalking for all past, present, and future releases.

This is more of a slow to medium burn. Mysterious and fascinating at the same time. We follow the tales of August and her monster on a quest to find information while people lurk around all the corner.

I could have sat and read this all at once ...it was that entertaining and original. I'm definitely going in for more.

This one had a lot of potential. New ideas, creative application… It just felt like an extended outline of what it could have been, with many parts being rushed and others dragging too long. The romance is hot and cold, seemingly trying to work from an enemies to lovers trope, but feels more like a coin flipping back and forth than any real development. I’d call it an afterthought, but it’s more like the author was afraid to really commit to fleshing the characters out past superficial characteristics and a weak foundation for future feelings. I don’t regret reading it, but I’m really not inspired to continue with the series, even with the cliffhanger at the end.

August about made me want to chuck my kindle 30 different times through this story. I loved her so much by the end but I just wanted her to be real with herself. She was so concerned with perceptions and what the world would perceive as right, she never stopped to truly consider what she wanted. It took until the end of this first book for her to even be remotely true to herself and I finally felt like I liked her as well as loving her. Now with all that being, I think it was frustrating because in a paranormal romance, with a paranormal heroine, she felt too real. Her insecurities were rooted in things I could relate too which always makes a heroine harder to like when you see the things in them that you don’t like about yourself. Debbie did a fantastic job and make Auggie unlikeable(but redeemable) and loveable all at the same time. I’m looking forward to Augusts growth and I truly hope we see steps forward for her instead of rooting herself back.

Now, Telarion, who I can only assume will be end game with August, it seemed clearer at the end that it would be. But this story could go so many ways. Because we don’t get his POV we only get what he shows us and what August knows about the monster attached to her, which isn’t much. There are moments when you can tell he really cares for(possibly loves)August, but being attached to her and hearing all of her internal battle regarding him, has made him even more closed off and harder to read. I feel for him, because he has to hear and deal with all of Augusta negativity and her back and forth regarding him, while dealing with his confusing feelings regarding himself and her. But I’m hoping because of the ending of this book, we start to see steps forward for them and they both get the answers they deserve.

The outside plot was amazing and detailed filled without feeling like an info dump novel. I have seen the comparison of a mix between Veronica Mars & Supernatural, I would 100% agree. It’s an amazing start to what I can only assume will be a fantastic series. I can’t wait for Debbie Cassidy to continue this 5 star series.

This was a interesting book. August is a very unique girl with abilities that even she doesn't know the full extent of. Telrion is the monster she hosts. He is very interesting and I can't wait to find out more about what he is.

I LOVED this book. All the character are interesting and fun. Archie makes my heart so happy and I just want him to have all good things. I can’t wait to see what happens with Quentin. I really want to keep liking him even if I never want to see the word “azure” again. Everytime he’s mentioned I had to read about his azure eyes as if it was a personality trait. Otherwise excellent book can’t wait to read the next one.

Of course book tok-ers will understand the draw of monsters, sexiness, and all things fantasy. Looking forward to learn more about August and what she is becoming and who Telarion was... What's up with Quentin. This fantasy world is an interesting pull you in with a real world feel. Hard to put down and not engulf yourself in the whole series at once.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exciting from start to……

How dare this book finish like that!!! I actually cried out.

I love the characters. They are building beautifully, gently becoming more like people you know than people in a book. The relationships between the characters like real life.

Goodies and baddies and more baddies who say they’re goodies. And baddies that are, but also aren’t.

Then there’s Quentin. There’s So much more to him. Next book NOWWW

5.0 out of 5 stars This book unites mystery, romance and monsters. I love it!

Wow, this book was AMAZING! The story follows August, a young woman with the ability to walk into rifts, aka rips into the world that serve as gateways to a parallel dimension. To escape a deadly situation, August accesses one of these rifts when it isn’t safe, and only manages to survive by making a deal with a monster, an aberration called Telarion: he saves her life, but she will carry him out of the rift and be his host. Now August is hosting this monster inside her, and every day after sundown, he comes out. Much like Venom and Eddie Brock, but make Venom but the hotter, smexier version.

The world-building in this book was fantastic. The author wrote it in a way that was easy to grasp without ever falling in the info-dump trap. But most importantly, I loved the characters. August is a fantastic female lead, and she’s surrounded by an amazing cast of secondary characters. Her relationship with Telarion was so fascinating, especially given their connection. I never imagined I would fall head over heels for a monster, but Telarion has ways. Sure, his jaw unhinges and he eats bad humans, and his tongue is very long, but his ruthlessness and monstrous ways have his charm. (I love it when he calls her tiny human!) Besides, there’s a whole mystery surrounding him that has me very intrigued. I’m developing theories.

The mystery element is quite prevalent in this book and runs side by side with the romance, which made me affectionately call August and her friends “The Monstrous Scooby gang.” (I was a huge fan of Scooby-Doo. What does this story have to do with Scooby? Absolutely nothing. Let’s proceed.) There’s actually multiple mystery plotlines, a main one that is solved within the book, and others instead that will run presumably throughout the entire series. Basically, this book was written with every intention to blow my mind. It has everything want and love: romance, chemistry, spice, mystery, amazing characters, and supernatural beings. It’s perfect!

I loved this. Their relationship has so much chemistry and there are many twists here, in fact, the book ends with a woozy one. Her friends and family are a bunch if very rich and unique characters and there is so much heart in here. I really hope she turns the tables on the order.

4.0 out of 5 stars Four stars

Stars given on level of engagement;

5 stars - less than a day to read because I cannot put it down. I only give 5 stars if it has managed to engage extra emotions from me - extreme lol moments or real teary moments etc. A 5 stars book tends to have me raging about cliff hangers and (legally and not creepily) stalking the author for release dates.

4 stars - 2 days to read or less. A book that I have quite enjoyed reading, feisty MC and some racy scenes with thier romantic interest. I would definitely follow a series and author for 4 star books.

3 stars - takes around 2/3 days to read, usually because I have become distracted and less engaged in some sections but by the end the end I have enjoyed the overall story and would read any sequels.

1/2 stars not given, as I have usually returned it without finishing as I'm not engaged. .

Debbie Cassidy is a genius with her books.
I’m a huge fan and every book I’ve read just tick every single thing you want in a supernatural read.
Always a kick arse FMC and always cool monsters
Her writing is always on point. You never drift off half way or want the story to hurry up. It’s like a breath of fresh air.
Your entertained from the first page and glued to that book till the very end.
Always yummy monsters or some kind of supernatural.
Your always gonna be swooning and a giggle here n there.

Aberrant monsters is oh so different but in a great page turner way. Could you imagine having some kind of monster who actually cares about you and not only because they need you to survive, being attached to you as a host n all.
Yeah this is definitely a different love story with it’s own quirks and fantastic characters. Brilliant first part to this series. Deserves more than 5 stars ⭐️
If you never read any of Debbie Cassidy’s books then you need to start right now. You will never ever look back. EVER!!!!!
