What An Earl Wants (Scandalous Ladies Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 1,092 ratings

What’s a lord to do?

Benjamin, Earl of Sinclair, is living in chaos. So many of his well-trained servants are pairing up and running off to be wed that his friends begin calling him The Matchmaking Earl. Fortunately, his talented new secretary, J. Quincy, begins setting the household to rights. But imagine Sinclair’s surprise when he discovers the “J” stands for Josephine. His favorite employee is a lady in disguise!

Jo desperately needs this position, and never actually lied about her gender … though she didn’t expect Sinclair to figure out her secret so soon. If the ton finds out, the scandal could be devastating. She’s only going to stay long enough to earn sufficient money to move her ailing sister away from London. Can she succeed before word gets out and scandal brings them both down? And after working so closely with the handsome, charming Sinclair, can she leave with her heart intact … even if the earl now wants Jo as a match for himself?

Originally published January 2005. Lightly edited for 2021 as book 1 of the Scandalous Ladies series. Each book in the series can be read as a stand-alone -- each is a complete story arc with no cliffhangers -- though most readers prefer to read them in the order published.

About the Author

Living in England as an Air Force brat gave Shirley Karr an appreciation for all things British. After a brief flirtation with journalism, she embraced the world of romance, trading headlines for happily-ever-afters. She lives in Portland, Oregon, with her hero husband of more than twenty years. (She swears she was a child bride.) When not writing, reading, napping, or researching, shedesigns jewelry, is learning to play classical guitar, and searches for the perfect sugar-free chocolate.

Shirley Karr’s love of all things Regency began in childhood, when her father’s Air Force career took the family to England for four years. Not only did they visit historic houses, museums, and castles galore, they lived in centuries-old housing. She currently resides in the Pacific Northwest with her husband (whom she met on a blind date and married five months later), son, and multiple four-legged family members. To unwind, she loves to make jewelry with gemstones and pearls, grow tomatoes, and go tent camping at the Oregon coast. She’s back after a fourteen-year break from writing, creating light-hearted stories of adventure and romance with a dash of spice, set in Regency England.

From start to finish this book will hold your attention . It has history, romance believability! Truly a pleasure to have read.

I mostly liked this. There are times it drags a bit. Those parts felt tedious and go on for too many chapters. But I liked the characters overall. I think had the story moved a bit more and/or there’d been a bit. Pre intrigue, I’d have rated higher. But overall, a solid regency.

I couldn't put this book down! That was for two nights in a row. I loved that the characters had arcs they changed and grew in relatable ways facing relatable fears. So many romance characters are missing that and it leaves the story feeling flat. This story is perceptive, the dialogue will leave you smiling. I'm so glad that there are more books in the series.

The book was really enjoyable until about three quarters of the way. The characters were fun, the plot interesting. But the last part dragged on with nothing new but useless prevarication and the main characters losing all common sense. What a pity!

This was a cute, easy-to-read story. I enjoyed the storyline and antics that went on despite what some reviewers say. It's fairly clean except for some sexual innuendos toward the end and for one scene of intense foreplay.

Josephine and Benjamin were a perfect match. Intrigue with smart characters. Great storyline and well written. Just sorry it ended with scene at the ball and not the actual wedding.

Veramente molto piacevole da leggere. Piuttosto lungo, quindi c'è uno slow burn, ma i due protagonisti sono adorabili, intelligenti e il finale non delude. Consigliato!

An engaging, amusing and different take on the nuances of the ton in regency times. Enjoyable at every chapter, we follow clever Quincy as she navigates the perils of the female in challenging times. Thoroughly enjoyable at every chapter.

Not a dull moment. Quincy became a man to provide for her family. She becomes the secretary to Earl Sinclair. But some people start recognising that she is not a man, but a young lady. She falls in love with Sinclair, but doesn't want to involve him in a scandal and leaves him. Later both of them get married n realise that they don't need the approval of society and can live their own lives while still living in it and need not change themselves.

Don't forget to read this.

I like the trope of a young woman disguised as a man, curious what an author makes of it. This starts romp-like, but settles down to a generally amusing story with the chaos in the earl's household. I liked the characters and the mischievous, knowing scheming of the family members.
