The Devil's Fool: A Paranormal Vampire Romance Novel (Devil Series Book 1) Kindle Edition
“I was afraid of the dark until I became it."
As the daughter of a magical family, power bled through my veins.
The desire to control.
Manipulate.
It lived in my blood, handed down from generations of witches.
They expected me to be the same. Subtly rule over humans, bending their will to ours.
But I wanted to be free of my family’s dark world.
Their crimes and murders.
I wanted to be more.
Be different.
Boaz, a powerful vampire, saved me from my parent’s suffocating grip.
He promised me the world.
Seductive.
Bewitching.
I craved him.
His power.
His strength.
But the devil’s in the details.
And even he was once an angel.

About the author
Join my private Facebook group where you can talk about everything Rouen: Raven Steele and the Rouen World Readers Group
Born at the stroke of midnight, Raven Steele grew up in a home bordering a graveyard as old as time. Ghosts became her only friends and whispered tales of a world that existed between night and day. In this place, monsters roamed the lands, magic curled in the wind, and good and evil fought over the hearts and minds of humans. Desperate to not let those dark and brave creatures be forgotten, Raven wrote down the words of the ghosts, knowing their stories of triumph and sorrow would give strength and comfort to those in our world.
And so, when the sun sets, Raven retreats to the cemetery at the edge of the woods, where she sits and listens to the dead speak their tales of Rouen and all of its inhabitants. Because one day, our two worlds may collide, and when they do, we must be ready. For when their darkness bleeds into ours, we will be fighting for more than our lives. We will be battling for our souls.
Raven Steele is a pen name to USA Today's bestselling author Rachel McClellan.

Great Read!
This story quickly held my interest.
Overall the story is good but has more of a young adult feel to it.
There is no romance in this first book.
It basically starts of with the main character, Eve's 18th birthday, being introduced to an older vampire, Boaz by her mother.
I couldn't get over how cold her family treated her and
considering how awful Eve's parents treated her,
why would she trust Boaz, someone that her
parents made a point of her meeting?
I think that Boaz is too old for Eve, I mean he is "hundreds" of years old and she just turned eighteen.
The relationship felt lopsided and he seemed more like a mentor than a romantic interest.
The story was dark, gritty, and I could not put it down.
Sometimes, I felt sorry for Eve, other times, I called her stupid.
I couldn't figure her out at first, was she crazy, evil like her parents, or was "someone" taking advantage of her?
She was hearing things people said that they didn't say,
she was seeing things other people didn't see,
What in the Hell? Literally? Maybe..
Eve goes through a lot in just a few chapters and seven years pass.
The story is about making mistakes, learning from those mistakes, and forgiveness.
This is a good start to an engaging series.

*I don't want to give spoilers, but I do want to say if you're a fan of Jessica Jones, there are aspects of this story that will definitely appeal to you, character-wise*
Okay, that said. It's REALLY hard to review this story with the details without giving spoilers, so I'll just give a quick overview of what I can, hopefully without giving any spoilers. Early on, we're introduced to what we believe to be the villains of the story, Eve's parents. I have to say this scene is pretty crucial to developing Eve's potential as a human being, because her dark turns later in the story would otherwise make her unlikable; instead, you root for her the whole way.
Boaz comes along just in time to stop her parents from going too far in their torture of Eve (really gives child abuse a new meaning). He literally saves her life. After that, however, Eve becomes self-destructive and dark in her choices. Again, I don't want to give too many spoilers, but it really takes a lot for her to break away from because the more she uses magic, the darker she becomes.
Along the way, I held out hope for things I should not have hoped for. Rachel McClellan did a fantastic job creating multifaceted heros. People who could be the hero one day, and the villain the next. Ultimately, this is a story about overcoming addictions (so isn't it ironic that I became addicted to reading it!) but it's not the kind of addictions you would think.
It was nice to read something so dark and edgy while still seeing some value and meaning to the story. I can't wait for book two! Edit: I have since read book two an am now looking forward to book three!
I am being careful to not reference the plot specifically because it was so well-thought-out--taking usual fantasy plot cliches & stretching them into something complex and new. This novel is well-balanced with quiet moments for character development & lots of sweeping magical action that blends together well.
I hope McClellan is able to keep up the depth & pacing in this series because this is a great first book.
**I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review**
but I just bought a copy b/c I want to read this again not in PDF format. :-)
