"It is rare to see LGBT representation in a fairy tale like this and I really love it. It wasn't a main plot point, but it is there."

"A book like this reminds me why I love the fantasy world so much. Etta and Alex were such great characters with complex personalities that it truly made them easy to connect with. It was fantastic to see the range of emotions that they went through just in this story. I highly recommend this book if you love fantasy retellings, curses, magic, and action."

"In this Rapunzel retelling, Ms. Lynn takes the childhood damsel in distress you know and love and turns her into a strong protagonist you'll be rooting for from the start."

I'm a USA Today Bestselling author of fantasy, contemporary romance, and romantic comedies. Fantasy was my first and forever love with the bestselling "Golden Curse". I love taking old stories and turning them around until they're almost unrecognizable except to the most avid fans. I write books to challenge myself, tackling hard topics or places so different from my own. Studying ancient cultures, architecture, and folklore is one of the best parts of being an author.

I've written more than seventy stories full of magic, love, and friendship, and at thirty-three, have no plans to ever stop.

I would recommend this book to all fantasy YA fans! I loved the plot, characters, and the romance. I'm so scared to what will happen in the next book but I really hope that there's more romance to it! I got hooked with this book because of the high fantasy plot including curses and a prince!

I’ve mentioned my love for fairy tales, yeah? I loved this book! It’s a Rapunzel retelling, but I honestly didn’t get the connection until the end. Even then, it’s a subtle connection. Etta has magic and golden hair, but until the end, that’s about the only likeness to the story. Regardless, it was still a fantastic book. There’s also a reference to Sleeping Beauty when explaining the curse’s history.

M. Lynn is a new author to me, but after this book, I’m hooked. The story was quick-paced, but it didn’t feel rushed. It was well written and easy to follow through the histories and changing POVs. It had everything you’d want from a YA fairy tale, but it was told in a more modern way while still taking place in a historical setting.

For the most part, I loved the characters. Alex was very wishy-washy, especially in the end, but with everything going on, it was to be expected. Even if I didn’t like his actions. Etta was pretty awesome. I love a good, strong herione who doesn’t take crap from anyone. Those are the two main characters, but it was actually Edmund and Prince Tyson who were my favorites. Edmund is Alex’s best friend and head of his personal guard. We also find out early on that he’s in love with Alex. It is rare to see LGBT representation in a fairy tale like this and I actually loved it. It wasn’t a main plot point, he never acted on it, but it was there. Tyson is the youngest royal sibling, who has secrets of his own, and throughout the story we see this warm, caring character who you just can’t help but love.

I fully intend on jumping into the next book ASAP. I’m so glad all three books are out already and I don’t have to wait for more of the story. There are two books after that as well, which are based on Cinderella and take place in the same world. The second book, Glass Princess, was actually just released today. I already can’t wait to read them. The covers are absolutely beautiful, and we all know how I feel about Cinderella retellings!

If you like fairy tales, check out this series! I will definitely be continuing and looking for more of Lynn’s books.

I didn’t know anything about this book when I got it for free. I’m not quite sure how Rapunzel plays into it because I remain largely ignorant of Rapunzel’s story. I did enjoy the plot and the enemies to lovers trope. Unfortunately, I was left on a cliffhanger and I don’t yet have the next book!

A good story that pulled me in quickly because of the girl’s relationship with her horse. I'm a sucker for animals. I like the idea of the curse and that despite her hatred for the Kings, she is destined by the curse to serve and protect Alex. It's an interesting way to tie them together. Honestly, i wouldn’t have had a single idea it was a Rapunzel retelling if it hadn’t been mentioned once, but it's not what you think and I won’t give away spoilers. I assume that comes more into play later in the series. There was little romance build up, it just kind of happened… I would likely read book 2 if it was free on unlimited but it wouldn't be top of my list.

I loved this dark & twisted, refreshing take on this old favourite with a curse weaved in. Persinette or Etta is tied to the enemy prince by a curse that will take hold of her the minute the boy is crowned king. She actually has to fight to the death at a tournament for the position of Protector to cover up her forced proximity to the prince, all while keeping her magic powers under wraps coz the enemy…yup, you guessed it - has outlawed magic. The story flowed well, characters were great, world bulding was convincing, MMC grappled nicely with the hand he was dealt. It felt like clean YA - there are romance encounter scenes but very youth ardour & kinesthesia rather than detailed description lewdness, so I’d still go with upper YA. Have wishlisted the sequel and definitely want to know what awaits Persinette and Alex after that cliffhanger ending.

Recommended for lovers of dark YA fairytales, epic fantasy and coming of age tales.

This book was so good I literally read it in a single day! I personally enjoy fairy tale retellings and Michelle, the author, has a talent for exciting, different retellings!

This review contains a few spoilers, though it won't give away the whole plot!

Persinette, or Etta, is a fierce and passionate heroine. Based loosely on Rapunzel, you're more likely to find Etta running into battle to save the day and the prince rather than waiting in a tower for a prince to save her.

This is most definitely a story of betrayal. Etta's father was like a brother to the king, his protector, until the king had her father construct magical wards around the kingdom letting none with magic in or out. Then the king began a "purge" going after everyone with magic. It didn't matter if they were good, bad or like a brother to him.

Etta and her father flee to the Dark Forest where his magic conceals them and allows him to train Etta, to make her strong and fierce. For not only does Etta have magic, like her father she is cursed. From the day she turns 18 she will be magically bound to Prince Alex, the son of the king, the man her father is bound to and the one who hunts everyone for simply being born with magic.

Her father works to prepare her for her life bound to an enemy of all magical people. A man it will physically hurt her to be away from. And when the opportunity arises to become Price Alex's protector, she seizes it.

As Alex's Protector it is her duty to be with him nearly always. Though there are those who would stand in her way and try to keep them separate, she is around him enough to see he struggles with the kind of king he wants to become.

As children, Alex and Etta were friends. But after the purge started, Alex was forced to watch his father zealously hunt down those with magic and spent years listening to his father's teaching that magic was evil and so were those who possessed it.

As a young man Alex must figure out for himself what is right, what is wrong and what kind of ruler he plans to be. But will any of them be able to overcome a series of betrayals?

This book has definitely left me wanting more and I can't wait to finish Alex and Etta's story!

3.0 out of 5 stars The romance lacked chemistry

I don't know if I love or loathe the authors who end the books on cliffhangers. I suppose it's a little of both. Now, let's talk about the Golden Curse. M. Lynn did a wonderful job with this book because at times, the circumstances made me feel too much and made me numb altogether. Persinette, also known as Etta, was cursed to be the protector of the price of the kingdom she hated. Her character was tried to be portrayed as ‘badass’, but I love how the author did not make her an emotionless cliche. She has her emotional moments, which rather than drafting her as a weak girl, actually display how compassion can be a sign of soul. “Even as her magic begged for beauty, she trained for darkness”--- she planted a little bud with her magic after she killed her opponent in a fight. I would call it a fair fight, but wars aren't fair, and there is no morning glory. The little twists and turns that continued to pop up during the course of the entire book never failed to elicit a gasp of surprise from me, kudos to the author for that. A little about Prince Alexandre now. Honestly speaking, I was not fond of the way Alex’s picture was painted. I understand how he was supposed to be a prince conditioned under the reign of his cruel father, but Alex’s identity was all over the place. He was told to be a constantly partying womanizer, who never lost his cool. Yet, when he was crowned the king, he lost his cool at the slightest inconvenience. I had high hopes for him to change the way his father treated the people with magic and yet he completely shifted his view on his own best friend the moment the truth came out. I loved seeing Etta and Edmund’s chemistry as friends but the relationship between Etta and Alex seemed very much forced. Even Etta was transformed by the end of the book as her priorities changed, and not in a good way. However, I had no complaints about Tyson. I loved the youthful charm he radiated. Lynn’s mysteries for the series don't end here and I am very much excited to read further into the series. Hope Alex becomes a little more understanding in the upcoming books!

5.0 out of 5 stars An absorbing read, and an excellent start to what promises to be a thrilling series

This is the first book in the True Story of Rapunzel trilogy from the Fantasy and Fairytales series and was very absorbing, keeping me turning the pages into the early hours to finish it. I've even bought the other two books in the series so I can find out what happens next too! I love the character of Etta, whose independence and stubbornness is very endearing, and you really root for her. Alex, however, really annoys me as he needs to grow a spine and become his own person and learn about real life. Overall though, I loved the story and would highly recommend it to anyone who loves fantasy stories or adult fairytale retellings, and I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series to find out what happens to the characters in the rest of the story.
