First Blade (Awakening Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 980 ratings

A man who has lived only for this moment.
A woman who never wanted to be chosen.
A powerful elder vampire who will soon awaken.

Georgia Pearce doesn’t know why she was born with psychic abilities—a curse that has caused her to keep others at a distance for most of her life. But when she discovers a long-hidden artifact by accident, she immediately knows that it has chosen her to carry out an impossible quest.

As a rare angel-vampire hybrid, Zak Goodwin has been seeking purpose for longer than he can even remember. He finds it when a dormant family relic wakes up due to an unforeseen connection and leads him straight to a human who knows nothing of him, his world, or what this new surge of magic could mean for the world at large.

An ancient power is awakening, and only they can stop it from bringing on a new era of darkness. Georgia and Zak don’t know why they were chosen or what draws them to each other so intensely, but they won’t be able to succeed without giving their all to the mission. Losing focus could mean condemning the world to a fiery end, which means staying alive isn’t nearly as dangerous as falling in love.

About the Author

Aussie author Jane Hinchey writes sexy, snarky, badass paranormal romances and urban fantasy novels. Living in the City of Churches (a.k.a. Adelaide, South Australia) with her man, two cats, and turtle, she spends her days writing fantastical stories full of dark sexy vampires, hot shifters, sexy aliens, jaw dropping demons, sinful angels, and magical witches-and while they can be snarky and swear a lot, they mean well and you'll grow to love them. Honestly. When she's not in her writing cave she's usually playing the Sims, Civilizations or something similar, binge watching Netflix or upping the ante in the crazy cat lady stakes.

I really enjoyed this book. Its a new author and while I had no idea what country this book was set it did not detract from the story. Lately I have not been happy with readers I normally enjoy and this was a great change of pace and grabs you into the story. Georgia is a psychic and the story never really explains where she gets her powers from while her sister has none. Her parents are deceased and she blames herself because she did not have vision to stop them from dying. During the story you see her frustration, determination and protectiveness. Zak is a good character. More history and backstory could have been thrown in but it keeps the ending of the story a surprise not having this back history which fleshes out a bit in the end. The next book (hoping there is one) featuring either her sister or friend Rhys will help with some of that back information and questions. The questions didn't leave you hanging just wanting another book. I can see this becoming a series with at least a book for the sister, Rhys and Zak's teammates. A spin-off from Rhys could be his werewolf pack possibly joining with Zak's warriors to fight the demons. Looking forward to more from this author, please write another soon!

First Blade is the first instalment of the Awakening series, this paranormal romance/urban fantasy by Jane Hinchey features Georgia Pearce, the temperamental, hot headed, immature female heroine who has strong psychic abilities and her sister Skye, who has none.
And so the tale begins……..
There is a lot happening in this book that at times it does feel a little rushed, especially toward the end.
This unpredictable and at times fascinating story has suspense, action, strong emotions, sex and many twists and turns.
There are many intriguing and interesting characters, both good and evil and even though the story flows well, there is not much background history of the main and supporting characters. They did lack depth and could have been developed much, much more. Perhaps this will be addressed in the next book. This adult romance is a stand alone with no cliff hanger. Overall it was an enjoyable book to read.

This is a NON-SPOILER REVIEW. First Blade by Jane Hinchey is Book 1 in the Awakening Series. This is my first Jane Hinchey read and I LOVED it! But then, there is so much to love in this book. While it is a first in series, there is enough resolution to read this book as stand alone. Georgia Pearce is our tough as nails, but vulnerable and hot-headed human heroine (Think Lara Croft). With psychic abilities and a knack for sensing vampires, Georgia is searching for a way to come to terms with the limits of her abilities. Zak Goodwin is our sexy and unidentifiable other entity. Zak is searching for the person that activates the First Blade. Put the two together and you get a combustible relationship that defies the odds. (I immediately thought of Jeaniene Frost - Cat and Bones from her Night Huntress Series) From the moment I began reading, I knew I was going to enjoy this read. Packed with action, sex, strong emotions and a plethora of characters that you want to get to know, Ms. Hinchey weaves a tale that will keep you in thrall! This is not your typical vampire/were/other story. (There are Triggers in this read and it is a Mature Audience Only Read!) I highly recommend this read to anyone that is looking for a heart thumping, hard to put down read.

I read the entire book. I liked the characters. There story kept me engaged. This was the author's first book. She is Australian, so some of the phrasing used was unique. The world building and over all character development was underwhelming. The story flowed though and it was clear the author had a story to tell. I will probably check out some more current work. I enjoyed the story overall.

This book is amazing. I got hooked on the first chapter and couldn't put it down. The story just runs smoothly from beginning to the end. Georgia was kick ass from the very beginning. I loved the scene in the bar when the guy was hitting on her and she asked him twice not to touch her. Then, she asks the bartender if she had said it twice and he said yes. She then punches him in the face, breaking his nose and him hitting the floor. When she goes to leave the bar, she says, Dad, I did what you told me, I asked twice before doing anything. It is not the exact words but you can read them for yourself. Looking forward to the next book. I'm glad that everyone had asked the author for more back then and she wrote more books. She is going to be another favorite of mine.

Good read. Definitely kept my attention and had me turning pages anxious to see what happened next. Really liked the characters but would have loved more on who they were before this all took place. Maybe the sisters growing up, if they had special talents other than fighting (Georgia). I felt connected to the story but not so much the characters. I loved how Georgia could hold her own against anybody and clearly clocked a vamp to escape. The story was well written with a steady pace and the black moment was sort of a double whammy. Good reading, would have loved more of their history but I still recommend this book.

Once you start, you won't put this book down. Georgia and Zak have to fight for their lives and the lives of those they care about most. Vampires, werewolves, and a witch's curse....who will come out the survior? Great book, can't wait to read the next one!

A psychic...
An immortal vampire...
An ancient dagger...
And, of course, trouble occurs...

Whoa! OMG! One of the best paranormal romances I have had the pleasure of reading this year! Such an intriguing, suspenseful, alluring and compelling read! So freaking good.

Absolutely positively great start to the Awakening series! Eagerly awaiting to read the rest of the books.

Full of sassy, kick-a** heroines, suspense, vampires, psychics, secrets, danger, drama, ancient daggers and love.

Perfect for readers of paranormal romantic suspense novels.

This is my kind of book and Georgia is definitely my kind of heroine. Kickass, snarky, strong willed and independent she's a great focal point for the storyline. I'll be reading the rest of the series to see where it goes but I'm loving it so far.

4.0 out of 5 stars Urban Fantasy with suspense and sass
Reviewed in Australia on July 9, 2021
First Blade jumps you straight into the action and by the end of chapter two you have met both main characters and been introduced to the main premise of the series. This is a paranormal romantic suspense that is filled with action, sass and drama.

Jane Hinchey has created two main characters that are funny and engaging. Georgia is a sassy and strong physic who wont be walked over by Zak Goodwin who is an arrogant alphahole half vamp/half angel hybrid. This book contains human, vampires and shifters, with witches being flagged as being included in the next book.

While First Blade was a good paranormal read it was slow at times and lacked a bit of finesse. I recommend this for readers looking to read paranormal, romantic suspense, magic or vampires
