He's back to visit, but can love convince him to stay? War correspondent Leo Erickson returns to his hometown of Bluestone Lake, Minnesota, when his parents notify him his young son is having trouble fitting in at school. Leo doesn’t know how to be a single parent since the death of his wife, and he certainly has no desire to return to Bluestone. But he needs a place for his son, a place where he’ll be with family, while Leo does his job. He’ll stay long enough to get Max settled, then go back to work.

School counselor Trinity Madison watches Leo struggle with his son, trying to overcome the mental barricade she’s erected against the man who sent his son away when he’s perfectly capable of caring for the child. The situation brings about her own unsettled feelings about giving her child up for adoption when she was young. But as she observes Leo’s difficulties, his sacrifices, she softens toward the man. While he’s in town, he ends up working with some old friends and Trinity on a committee to revitalize Bluestone. The former resort town is struggling and looking for ways to bring tourists back. Leo finds himself charmed, then smitten with the feisty counselor, but will he still love her when he learns her secret?

This is my very first book by MJ Frederick, I must say highly impressed, was expecting a cute little romance book but was actually taken in by the characters, Leo Erickson a war correspondent who came home to his small Minnesota hometown only to meet and eventually fall for Trinity Madison, who is the local schools counselor. Leo is a widower who unable to deal with the death of his wife, leaves his young son Max in the care of his parents and finally comes home to see to Max's problems. Trinity comes from one of the town's upper class families but has a shameful secret her family won't let her forget.
The author has a wonderful way with words that brings alive the characters and makes them realistic and believable, the description of the small town Bluestone made it very enjoyable for me to read and took me there with each description.

Bluestone Homecoming is the first book in the Welcome to Bluestone series by MJ Fredrick. Bluestone is a small town that has been hit hard by the recession. This book centers around Leo, a war correspondent that grew up in Bluestone but always felt "trapped" and wanted to get away. Leo's wife died two years ago and Leo had a hard time dealing with his grief. He's spent more time away from his young son Max then with him and when a series of nannies didn't work out he moved his son back to Bluestone to live with Leo's parents so he could return to Afghanistan to finish his story.

Trinity is the Bluestone Elementary School counselor and is the daughter of a Reveren. She made a mistake in college and her family has never let her forget it. When Leo comes to town because his son isn't adjusting well he meets Trinity. There is an instant attraction but Leo doesn't plan to stay for long and Trinity isn't sure she wants to get involved with someone who is leaving but she also hasn't been in a relationship since college and she's very attracted to Leo.

This book starts out a little slow as it introduces everyone to the town of Bluestone and the characters within it. This book is a sweet romance with touching moments between Leo and his son Max. Leo and Trinity are both likeable characters who work well together. I liked that Leo took it slow and charmed his way back into both his son's life and Trinity's life. MJ did a wonderful job of showing how the grief both Leo and Max felt affected them and the repercussions of Leo being gone so much. The initial scenes between Leo and Max were Leo felt so awkward with his own son and the pain that they were both feeling were very touching and heart wrenching.

This was a sweet, entertaining and easy read. The biggest issue was the rushed ending. I expected more of an ending and it was obvious that the book was leading to the next one which will be about two different characters from Bluestone. I'm not all that intrigued about the next couple in the book and in fact can't remember there names just that one is the country singer and the other is the waitress but I would like to read Lily and Quinn's book so I'll probably pick up the second book as well because I have to read a series in order.

Bottom Line: good introduction to a sweet and touching small town romantic series.

I was not a fan of the cover. It was a nice novella and over all enjoyed the story. Some things were over repeated and wish I knew her past secret before reading the story. It was an okay story but did not click all the way with me personally.

This was a beautiful story of love and finding what makes you happy in life. Trinity worked at the school where Mad went. She was also involved with Mac due to the issues he was having at school. Leo took a leave from his job that kept him away for long periods to get closer to his son. Especially since both were still dealing with the loss of a wife and mother. The more time Leo spent with Trinity the more he wanted to get to know her. Both having past issues to work through. The author did a great job of telling their story and giving the reader a very romantic but at times troubled road. The characters were well developed and easy to connect with. It was a very sweet read. Highly recommend!

I never read anything by this author before, but because I loved this book so much... I plan to look up for more in this series just as soon as I finish this review. I did only give this with a 4 star rating, but only because I would have loved to see an epilogue at the end. Otherwise this book is perfect!

I love stories that involve a small town setting anyway. I really don't know why, other than I was raised in one myself....so I guess I can relate more to them then I can other stories that involve the big city settings.

Anyway, about the story.....

This story have me laughing one minute, and bawling my eyes out the next. I felt the turmoil that Leo was going through having to decide between being there for his son, and going off to a job he loves, as a major war correspondent. I'm so very glad he chose his son over his job in the end. I know he only left because he couldn't handle his wife's death, but he never once stopped to consider the impact her death had on his son. And that was so wrong.

The one that I felt most sorry for was poor little Max. That poor kid just lost his mother, then he was torn away from the only home he ever knew, to move to a small town where he just didn't feel like he fit in. On top of that his dad also left him behind, while he went off to do his job overseas. So basically; to poor Max... it was like loosing two parents at once. And I don't know about any of you...but I think a 9 yr old is just a little too old to still have a grandmother bathing you. I'm sure he was quite embarrassed. I know I have a 9 yr. old grandson that would be mortified, if he even thought anyone was in the bathroom with him, little lone his grandmother.. And yes, his father came back to help him get through his problems, but for how long? Seems as though Max was always sitting on pins and needles, waiting for the day his father packed up and left him again. That is hard enough to go through for any child, so I understand completely why he started acting out.

I also felt the turmoil and shame that Trinity felt, too. It's one thing to be so young and all alone, and then to find out your pregnant too? And if that wasn't bad enough, the baby's father also abandons her. I have to give her credit for having the guts to do what's right by that child. It would have been nicer if she could have done it without being judged so harshly by her picture perfect family. The way her family treated her for the last nine years, has me questioning whether or not her own family even loved her in the first place. Aren't families supposed to love & support their child unconditionally? I would have been so proud of my child for doing what was right for the child. After all; that is not a easy decision for anyone to make.

Would I recommend this book? Yes, most definitely.

What a great background to this story. Both Leo and Trinity had to face sorrow in their lives. Leo lost his wife in a tragic accident, Trinity had to give up her child because her church going parents could not face the shame of having a daughter with a child out of wedlock. The were both drawn to each other. It was nice to see both of them ending up happy with each other and Leo has a happy son again.

This is the debut book in a series focused around a small community that is in need of some revitalization. The characters are well-developed - a widowed father called home from his war corespondant duties and a guidance counsellor/teacher who has her own losses and family issues to deal with. It's a sweet easy read - perfect for an afternoon break.

4.0 out of 5 stars A well crafted romance

Lee is a war journalist who has reluctantly returned to his hometown of Bluestone to visit his eight year old son Max. His son has been living with Lee's parents since the death of his mother in a car accident two years ago. With his son left in the care of his grandparents, Lee's way of handling his loss was to take an assignment reporting the war in Afghanistan and he intends his homecoming to be just a flying visit. However, he reckons without the charms of his son's teacher, Trinity and once the two meet, the result is inevitable. I never cease to admire the skill of good romantic fiction authors, who somehow manage to keep you on the edge of your seat, even though you know exactly how it's all going to end. This book was one of the good ones, marred only for the English market by the emphasis on baseball, something that I'm sure leaves many readers absolutely cold. However, apart from this one cultural difference, I found myself pulled into a story that had depth and substance and was clearly produced by skilled hands. The story left a some loose ends designed to be picked up by following books in the series and I would be interested to know what happens with some of the other characters.
