Ill-Fated Mate: A Steamy Monster Romance (Gods of Old Book 1) Kindle Edition
A cursed god...
Cursed to remain locked in his mountain hold until his soul’s mate frees him, Zcerneboch, God of Ill Fate, has forsaken all hope of ever finding that soul. After waiting for 2,500 years, he believes he has finally found her. Unfortunately, he can't convince her their souls are bound without leaving the mountain prison.
A skeptical mortal…
When folklore student Diana Antonov finds her name carved in strange runes on a German mountainside, she has to investigate them. She never dreamed she'd find an eight-foot tall, winged creature with golden eyes declaring that not only is he a god, but she is his eternal soulmate. She should run, but the chance to discover the truth behind the myth is too enticing.
An impossible task…
To break the curse, he must persuade Diana to open her soul to him, but the more he learns about her, the more he finds himself falling under her spell. And this woman deserves so much more than a monster...

He and Diana worked well as a couple and I loved that their dynamic was based on her teaching him things. She was patient and thoughtful with him, for the most part, so that was great.
This loses a star for me, however, because a lot of their relationship growth revolves around sex. And don’t get me wrong, I read steamy books all the time and I love it—I’m glad this book had a lot of it—but I wish that there had been more “normal” stuff to grow their relationship. He was supposed to teach her things for her dissertation but we never see that, so we don’t get those sort of mundane/normal relationship moments which would have made their connection feel stronger.
I was also a little confused by the Uncanny Society. I don’t think it was explained very well and I had trouble figuring out what exactly it was. I received a free copy of this book and am reviewing it voluntarily.
I’m a little dismayed by the lack of character building and world building. I do enjoy being thrown into the meat of the story, but I also like when we receive explanations sprinkled throughout the action rather than info-dumps.
I didn’t feel connected with our MCs because, well, I hardly knew them. We had their info-dumps of backstory without any present-day drama.
I was dismayed the whole Eris is the Villainess Taken Seriously trope happened again. Wouldn’t a folklorist know that Eris is allegedly mischievous and is essential a Real Housewife of Greek Hill who likes to start drama?
Granted, this romance takes place over a week, so I understand why our FMC believes Eris. Had the FMC and MMC been together longer, I would say they don’t deserve to be together if a god of chaos who instigates chaos manages to change their minds on the other.
This was still a solid read. A steamy romance but not a love story. No OM/OW drama, but the insta-love/insta-lust is there and isn’t my cup of tea. But it is what it is!

*Please note - I received this as an ARC but my opinion is entirely my own.
This weekend I completed this super cool monster romance book that I received as an ARC. Folks, this book releases tomorrow and I suggest you grab it! I have never read a “monster romance” but I’m always up for new genres. And boy, this one did NOT disappoint.
Let me start off by mentioning, if you are into Dark Romance, Taboo…just overall naughty stuff, this really isn’t your cup of tea. If you like good old-fashioned sticky sweet romance, maybe with a twist…come and get it!
So basically Zerne, or Zcerneboch – God of Ill Fate, is the God that everyone blames all their bad luck on. Terribly bad rap considering he is like the sweetest monster ever…and this mean ol’ Goddess comes around and decides to put a curse on him, trapping him in his cave until his fated mate releases him. Zerne is able to meet his fated mate by a little manipulation of chance and this is how you meet the FMC, Diana – who by the way, is like this brainiac beauty and just so happens to know a lot about ancient anything.
Let me throw in my Pros and Cons to lay it out for you.
Cons: I think there are a couple of points that are a little unclear to me. Nothing that truly impedes the story for me, but I felt a little left out on these points. When the Goddess curses him, I’m not really sure why she chooses this as his punishment. I can kinda see the Beauty and the Beast, or maybe even a male Sleeping Beauty, if you like big sexy monsters…but in the interaction in the beginning when the curse was placed, he didn’t really seem worthy of this particular curse. Why fated mate? And honestly, she seemed kinda shady. I think I would have treated her the same way Zerne did. And what’s the backstory here with his brother? Why is his brother such a creep to him but then basically saves the story? Is this something that we are going to see more on, perhaps in another book or is this story complete?
Pros: Oh so many Pros to this one! I loved that it wasn’t overly spice-ified. I want my brain to be fed, not just the below-the-brain area. It was so great to read that this “monster” was more like a big, adorable cuddly boyfriend. He was gentle and caring and basically used his big old brain to find ways to woo his FMC. AND he was “inexperienced” which I think totally did a number on me because I wasn’t expecting to like that so much. Diana came in, took charge, and turned him into a sex kitten. MEOW! Also, I totally loved Diana. I love that she was hot-nerdy and she was so confident and strong. Even through her own drama, she knew what she wanted and fought for it. She faltered for a second, but in the end she stayed true to herself.
