The Lost Siren: Rise of the Drakens, Book 1 Kindle Edition
A human female born into a breeding manor never has a choice…I am a slave, but at least I am alive.
When the man with wings and scales gave me a second choice—I took it. The others of his kind pin me with hungry eyes, but I’ll do what I must to survive. I'll preside over their Draken Games—and choose a winner every night to share my bed. The alternative is death.
Traded from one prison to the next I have but one hope left—the Lost Siren. I must find her before the demon hordes come if these men—Drakens—have any chance of escaping their mountainous prison, and me along with them.
Perfect for fans of Jennifer L. Armentrout, The Lost Siren is the exhilarating introduction to the Rise of the Drakens series.

⚠️Spoilers Ahead⚠️
* Throughout the book, FMC was very hot-and-cold between annoyingly meek and randomly feisty. It didn’t feel like the character had substantial growth so much as she just seemed to have a forced character epiphany by the end.
* FMC’s reactions to encounters were also baffling. Her behavior was erratic and inconsistent with the background knowledge we were given. There was also a ‘Virgin Vixen’ complex that I didn’t care for.
* There were contemporary turns of phrase in the high fantasy setting that interrupted the immersion of the moment.
* As conflict scales up and fighting increases, there’s no progression of weapon-wielding skills mentioned for the FMC (other than one lesson gone wrong) but then suddenly she’s able to throw a dagger (then a sword) with lethal precision.
* Some fight scenes also didn’t translate well in a logistical sense (she jumps on someone’s back then somehow stabs them in the foot and retrieves the blade without leaving her position.)
* And finally, there is the MMC. There is literally no sympathy towards how Benedict treats his supposed mate. If it weren’t so laden with forced miscommunication trope, it would be an interesting concept of what it’s like to hate the being you are paired with as a fated mate. But this concept is twisted into a horribly toxic scenario where she loves him despite his clearly abusive behavior and it feels like a condoning of domestic violence.
“I decided I didn’t care if he had manipulated me into realizing the truth, and I didn’t care if he didn’t even like me.”
This is a direct quote as she is internally declaring her love for him after he just (pretending) killed himself to get her so upset that she transformed into her darken form, revealing that she is the lost siren.
* It’s one thing to read an FMC fall for the bad boy with a sad past, but this is not that. This is straight emotional abuse (not to mention the physical abuse that happens multiple times earlier) all because he’s angry that his lust (refuse to call it love) for her is stronger than his need to protect his people. Even though he doesn’t seem to have a problem with his people murdering each other in the first place.
All that said, the author’s writing style had so much potential, it just missed the mark with such problematic content.
Cons: a few editing issues I think. Scenes where movement or storytelling was difficult to follow, and/or characters showing up as if they were there the whole time without being involved throughout the scene. A couple of places I think a word is missing.
reel and I'm glad I did! Had me holding onto the edge of my chair as I read delving deeper into the story, the twist at the end caught me off guard. Can't wait to get the next book! Deserves 10 stars!
As some other reviewers have mentioned, this book needed some more work on the particulars in fight scenes and on the intricacies and nuances in characters' reactions. Benedict (MMC) and Wren (FMC) feel like unsteady characters. Wren especially since she goes from being an uneducated servant in a breeding house to a confident badass sassy warrior in (I think) the span of 4 days??? Lol the whiplash you get when reading that she knows how to throw daggers or persuade men with her looks and body when she's never done any of that in her life is crazy.
Her character in the beginning was awesome: she chooses to be kind, is unwilling to seem weak in the face of men who torture her, does her work and understands her situation -- sort of like a reluctant pessimist who hopes that the world has more in store for her. But as soon as she's taken to the draken lair, it's like she's a different character with different skills. I don't know what would have made the transition feel smoother... maybe more time where we know that she's training and building confidence or if she learned how to seduce men from the other women in the breeding house and just never used those skills before? I don't know.
There are also some minor content and grammar errors that make the read a bit choppy-- like at one point the MMC's cousin is called his nephew and I had to stop reading to make sure I got that right.
I don't know. I liked the poly stuff and the magic and magical creatures-- I think they all make sense together. But the FMC development definitely felt very hasty.

The story telling is fantastic and I hope each character is fleshed out more in the next book as I feel there is so much to learn about each.
I would advise to check triggers before reading.
