Off the Deep End: A MM Sports Romance Kindle Edition

3.9 3.9 out of 5 stars 321 ratings

I’m the nerdy reporter. He’s the hotshot diver. We’re complete opposites. There’s no way this will ever work.

My entire life, I’ve had one dream. To be the best reporter I can be and tell stories that matter. When the opportunity to shadow an Olympian lands in my lap, I’m determined to rise to the occasion. But nothing can prepare me for Wes Cooper in all his glory.

Wes is the cocky athlete who has no interest in having a green reporter standing in his way. Or asking too many questions. Which is fine. I’m here to do my job, not be his friend.

But when he extends an olive branch, I start to rethink things.

There’s clearly more to him than meets the eye. The more time I spend with him, the more I want to know. Professionally, of course.

Except when he looks at me like that, I feel all kinds of unprofessional things.

I’m a goner.

Off the Deep End is a standalone, MM romance with no cheating and a HEA guaranteed!

sweet romance that will make you smile and your toes curl
Wes is fighting back after an injury sidelined his diving career the year leading up to the Olympics. To help gain attention and perhaps some endorsements, his coach calls in a favor at the local newspaper to run a personal piece on Berkley's own olympic diver hopeful.Wes is starting his journalistic career and can't quite figure out what makes this piece on a local olympic hopeful special. That is until they meet. The sparks in this book were hot. I loved that there was no miscommunication or third act break up. The plot revolved around the love story of the two men and how they became a couple with the Olympics as a backdrop. As a former diver this book made me smile. I was smirking especially when Wes asked Finn what score he would rate the dive and was told a 10.If you are looking for a sweet romance that will make you smile and your toes curl pick this one up. I really enjoyed my audiobook and suggest reading it that way if you have a chance.

When a friend suggested we listen to Off the Deep End together, I was excited to start this story. It’s not often you read books about swimmers and divers. I enjoyed seeing a bit “behind the scenes” of being an Olympic diver and thought Emily gave just the right amount of insight without going overboard and keeping the story on the characters. This opposites attract, slightly forbidden, sports romance was a sweet and listen read that was perfect to cozy up with.

Wes is a pro swimmer and while on his journey back after an injury, his coach decides to get him some good publicity before qualifying for the Olympics gets underway. When a relatively green journalist is assigned the story, Wes is not amused. But he’s surprised when Finn turns out not to be exactly what he expected. As time passes, they become friends and their attraction grows. Falling for your subject is not the most professional thing to do, but resisting Wes is harder than Finn ever bargained for.

This audiobook was a treat. J.F. Harding and Tim Paige are two of my favorite male narrators and the contrast in their voices was perfect for these two characters. Their differences really distinguish the characters and give each an individual life of their own. Both J.F. and Tim give strong performances with humor, emotion, and passion. You’ll feel like you’re right next to Wes and Finn as they fall in love. If you love a sweet and steamy romance, I would definitely recommend this audiobook.

2.5 (rounded up bc I try to reserve 2 stars for works I dislike—this landed more on “meh” for me)

The overall story and characters were fine, but there were so many odd choices when it came to wording (eg “it was *like* I ___” but describing something that literally actually happened, or actions just not making sense. I annotated way more than I should need to) and emphasis/plot points.

The most stark example of the writing just not making sense is Wes being up on the 10 meter platform, having a panic attack, and then suddenly Finn is there (even though he’d been terrified to go up there before, no mention is made then or at any point later of how he went up there for the first time), and somehow a few scraps of dialogue later they’re both in some room alone off the near the weight/locker rooms. I went back and reread 3 times trying to figure out where I missed them climbing down from 10 meter diving platform with Finn basically carrying Wes—he wasn’t aware of much so not sure how he’d have climbed back down the ladder being /that/ out of it without falling. There wasn’t even an acknowledgment like “how did I get down” or “wow I’m suddenly back at floor level”
and it actually really really frustrates me because that should have been caught in editing, even if all the other inconsistencies/plot holes/nonsense moments weren’t. This was supposed to be a big emotional pivotal scene and all I could think about while reading it was how tf “scrawny lanky” Finn carried massive “muscle god” Wes down a 3 story ladder

It seemed to be setting up for a big deal out of their careers being in conflict, but it was hardly an issue after all (which I don’t mind, since I hate the whole “we could nEVeR be together we’re sOOo different” thing, but then don’t try to make that the main conflict if the characters themselves forget about it immediately).

The ethics of a journalist sleeping with their subject was only addressed towards at the end in an offhand way, and then again right before the end with a dramatic “I thought I was about to be fired” like did you really think that?? because we got zero worry/thoughts/plans/emotions/any thoughts about that being a real concern. It also absolutely should have gotten him taken off the assignment—not disclosing that you’re dating the person you’re writing about (especially in such a favorable light) to both your boss and your audience is unethical.

Didn’t feel that strongly about either MC; they were fine, but didn’t feel that invested in any parts of their relationship or career paths/journeys. The POV voices were indistinguishable, honestly.

Had a few moments that made me almost let out a chuckle-adjacent-breath. It wasn’t terrible, just frustrating to have a story avoid some of the more annoying tropes by setting up false conflicts that go nowhere and fizzle out.

I appreciate the diving puns sprinkled in (at least I hope they were intentional)

This story grabs you from the start and keeps you on the hook until the very end. Even now after being done, the book still has a hold on me and it makes me happier to know you you get see Finn and Wes in Alex’s book for the football series. This book is a roller coaster of emotions. The fierce competition of elite athletes, and getting a behind the scenes looks with Finn as reporter. You get the good bad and ugly of competing at that level and it was awesome that it was showcased on the book about maintaining good mental health. Which should correlate to all aspects of life and help connect to readers Love the story!

A sweet story of two men falling in love. Wes needs somebody to lean on, to share the burden of the pressure he puts on himself in diving as an Olympic hopeful after an injury. Finn is looking to jumpstart his journalist career, not intending to find love at the end of the pen. It's low stress, comfort reading.

Enjoyed this more than I might have because I spent 13 years involved in competitive swimming and diving. But it was quite fluffy and just didn’t accomplish the depth I like to see in a book. Thought the story was a good idea, but the writing wasn’t particularly inspired. Predictable plot, very low angst, super sweet romance, but not a lot of spark. I’d give the author another try, but would hope for more depth.

I know next to nothing about diving as a sport, but that’s completely unimportant to enjoy this. Plenty of lust, love and humour, a couple of nervous angsty moments. The expected part happened ‘off screen’ so to speak, but it all leads to the perfect HFN, so whatever they do, wherever they end up, the HEA is in sight.

This was my first Emily Silver book and I really enjoyed it. Wes is an Olympic hopeful in diving, trying to comeback after a devastating injury and Finn is the reporter tasked with writing Wes' story. This was a low drama, low angst story that hit the spot for me. Wes and Finn has chemistry in spades and their story was really quite lovely. Definitely recommend this one.

A very endearing story with an interesting lesson in diving. A hot, perfect body diver meets a slightly nerdy and a wee bit shy reporter who's supposed to follow and write articles about the experience. At first Wes is not so keen on being followed and analyzed, that is until he lays eyes on Finn, and the rest is history. We follow them through thick and thin, right up to the Olympics. A lovely read.

i loved the storyline of an athlete reaching for gold after injury. Having Wes date Finn a reporter who was capturing his comeback was great. they were amazing toge. the articles Finn wrote were touching and made me think of all of the athletes who dedicate their lives to reaching their Olympic dreams. well told. it made me think of the gay British diver Tom Daley and his Olympic wins.
