Burning Caine: A Slow Burn Romantic Suspense Mystery (Caine & Ferraro Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 205 ratings

A dead body. A burned masterpiece. And two investigators with nothing but lies—and smoldering chemistry—between them.

Samantha Caine

I used to be a rising star in the FBI’s Art Crimes Team. Now I’m back in my tiny Michigan hometown, caring for my sick sister and working as a bored-out-of-my-skull insurance adjuster. Until, finally, an assignment that’s right up my alley—a claim for a million-dollar painting damaged in a fatal house fire.

From the get-go, something’s not adding up. The police are blowing it off. My boss is pressuring me to wrap it up ASAP. Worse, I’m paired with an art conservator who’s the kind of dark-haired, chisel-faced, Italian-accented distraction I don’t need.

Antonio Ferraro, Ph.D.

I met Samantha once ten years ago, and I’ve never forgotten the fiery, passionate woman. When she storms back into my life, I know I have to have her, despite her insistence she’ll never date again.

Telling her I immediately recognize the painting’s a forgery would reveal family secrets better left buried. So, I’ll complete the authentication to prove the fraud and win her over in the process. But if my deception's uncovered, it risks her case and my family’s reputation—and our second chance will go up in smoke.

Secrets, danger, and slow-burning passions collide in this slow burn romantic suspense mystery.

Burning Caine is the first installment in the completed Caine & Ferraro series, featuring a strong heroine, a swoon-worthy Italian love interest, and an art-world mystery in every book. The main couple is together from book one, with no cheating and no cliffhangers.

Janet Oppedisano hails from Canada’s East Coast and has lived in five provinces, from the Maritimes to the Prairies. Growing up with a Mountie for a father and marrying a Navy diver, it’s no surprise she writes romance with a hint of danger and mystery in it. Not to mention strong heroes and equally strong heroines.

When not writing, you can find her… thinking about writing. And indulging in her favourite pastimes, like baking, travelling, hiking, playing with her new puppy, and watching her hockey goalie son on the ice.

I read a lot and I don't often find a book that I have enjoyed more. Lots of romance with an incredibly handsome man and just enough mystery to keep the story interesting. I will be reading everything MS Oppedisano has written and hope she writes even more quickly.

Samantha Caine has a complicated personal and professional backstory. Professionally she worked for the FBI Art Crimes Division but is now doing contract work as an insurance adjuster in her hometown—there to offer support to her sister who is going through breast cancer treatment. For personal reasons she would rather be anywhere else. It’s refreshing to have a female main character who is highly competent, smart and confident in her professional abilities instead of down on her luck or looking to be saved (as many of the women characters are in romantic suspense novels).
Antonio Ferraro, our H, is a highly regarded art restorer. Handsome and charming as well as a serial dater he is instantly taken with Sam. 10 years ago they were in the same art history class and Antonio was intensely attracted to her but, very shy, she turns him down for a date. He looked very different then (much less attractive). They meet when Sam takes what is left of a Chagall painting that was damaged in a suspicious fire for authentication before the insurance company pays the million dollar claim. He recognizes her instantly but she doesn’t him. The mystery revolves around the fire; is the painting real or a fake and the death of the owner in the fire.
The mystery is very interesting with just enough detail regarding art and art forgery to make it feel real and authentic. Sam and Antonio have great chemistry and are characters with whom you really want to get to know. I took off one star because there was a little too much “should I or shouldn’t I trust him” for my taste. Other readers may not find this a problem. This is a series that picks up with “Chasing Caine” the next book which I’m very much looking forward to.

I wish I had known this was a cliffhanger! This was a great story so far, but I really don't like it when I get to the end and discover it's not the end. Not sure I will continue reading the rest.

This was recommended to me and did not disappoint. Steamy but with a compelling story. Can't wait for book 2!

Antonio and Samantha draw you in to this story that is filled with mystery and intrigue. Samantha is on a case that will test her resolve. Teamed with Dr. Antonio Ferraro has sparks igniting. She refuses to engage her heart and Antonio loves a challenge. In the meantime, they have to uncover clues to determine if the painting that is nothing but burned remains is the authentic artwork. Time is of the essence, and nothing is what it should be not to mention Antonio’s secrets that Samantha uncovers. Do they have what it takes to make it to a happily ever after. I am volunteering to leave a review for an ARC of this book for an honest review.

This author and series were new to me, and the ARC was provided by Hidden Gems. The book opens with Samantha Caine being back home in Michigan, working as an insurance adjuster when she falls into a local case with a personal connection. When there is a fire that causes a death and damage to a valuable painting, Samantha gets to use her extensive art background but also calls in art restoration expert, Antonio Ferraro. From their meeting they have sparks of their own and must work together on this intriguing case. They seem to have a natural fit with complementary backgrounds, but both have secrets that might complicate their future.

I received this book as an ARC for an honest and voluntary review. I think I have a new series to follow! This book isn't exactly a stand alone book, as there is currently five slated for the series, and it appears that each book is going to pick up where the last one left off with a new adventure.
Samantha Caine is a strong independent woman, once worked for the FBI, is currently back in her home town working as a claims adjuster at her ex-husband's family insurance company. That's fun.
Dr. Antonio Ferraro is an art expert whose family runs an art restoration business, something they have been doing for generations. Their paths cross when Sam is assigned to a million dollar painting that was involved in a fire, she has an interest in art. What should be simply prove the burned piece is the original turns into oh so much more. The whole time Antonio is trying to win Sam over, and she's trying to push him away. Sparks fly and one can't wait until the next chapter as we all try to put together what really happened.
Fans of authors like J D Robb, Marie Force and her Fatal/First Family Series, or even Tiffany Snow with her Kathleen Turner series imho will enjoy this series. I'm looking forward to the next installment.

I was really excited about this book when I read the blurb, as I love romance and mystery books. It was a little disappointing though. There seemed to be a lot of filler, a lot of back and forth waffling. There were also quite a number of characters in this book, and not enough distinction to separate them. I always found myself going back in the book just to find out who some of these characters were. I don't know, perhaps this book just isn't for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant mix of mystery, intrigue and spice

I was hooked immediately with the strong female role, mystery of insurance fraud and allusion to much more to come, Burning Caine is a well-written complex story that mixes genres while respecting each one.

Sam, a former FBI and potentially aspiring agent, takes us through this story of love, fraud and flames - both actual and internal. While she was the main protagonist, we are also told the story from Antonio's point of view which gave a nice balance of female versus male characters.

There were enough pieces of mystery not resolved in the end which ensures I'll be reading the next in the series in hopes that those situations are fleshed out.

This was a super fun read. The chemistry between the two main characters is fantastic. I really enjoyed the details the author included to make the art crime mystery come to life. I felt like I was reading a plot that could've been on an episode of White Collar. If you enjoy romantic suspense—especially if you like a smart, daring female main character and an Italian love interest with plenty of charm and sex appeal—read this book!

This book is a great blend of romance and suspense which compels you to just keep reading. While I always enjoy reading stories told from the first person perspective, the author alternates between the two main characters, making you feel like you really get to know them both. It’s a great, well-paced story with lots of twists and turns and terrific dialogue. I look forward to book 2 and more of the Caine and Ferraro story.
