Cruising on Ice: A Sweet Friends-to-Lovers Hockey Romance (Palmer City Voltage Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.1 4.1 out of 5 stars 230 ratings

It’s true that hockey players break hearts.
Sometimes, it’s their own.

Taylor Ranford has three immediate goals: have a blast on her birthday cruise with her sister, help Team USA win the international cheerleading title, and earn enough money to put her through grad school. Not part of the plan: her sister getting sick and sending her best friend—and Taylor’s longtime crush—in her place. She can't face the only guy she’s ever had feelings for treating her like she's his little sister when she really wants so much more.

After a big blow to his career—and his ego—and with no immediate plans for the next season, Kingston Brewer jumps at the opportunity to go on a last-minute cruise with the bouncy-ponytailed cheerleading coach. Taylor had always been there when he needed her most, and he holds a soft spot for her in his heart. But after a few days on the ship, Kingston begins to see Taylor as more than just his best friend’s little sister.

Just when he thinks they can explore a future together, Kingston gets THE call from his agent. Now he has to make one of the most difficult choices in his personal and professional life. Will he give up the professional chance of a lifetime for a chance with the girl he’s fallen head-over-skates for?

From the Publisher

I'd always been in love with the idea of Kingston.
Now that I had him, it was no longer an idea.
It was the real thing.

Editorial Reviews

From the Inside Flap

With Kingston, it would be forever or never. There was no in between, and we both knew it.

From the Back Cover

It's true that hockey players break hearts.
Sometimes, it's their own.

Taylor Ranford's three immediate goals did not include five days of pure torture. There was nothing in her plans about finding herself in the same cabin on a cruise with her longtime crush! The last thing she wants is for the only guy she's ever had feelings for to treat her like she was his little sister when she wanted so much more from him.

Kingston Brewer's lateral move to the Palmer City Voltage was a blow to his career--and his ego. With no immediate plans for the next season, he jumps at the opportunity to go on a last-minute cruise with the bouncy-ponytailed cheerleading coach who has always held a soft spot in his heart. After all, Taylor had been there when he needed her and he'd always be there for her. But it doesn't take long for him to realize his feelings for Taylor go beyond friendship and professional admiration.

When the call he's been waiting for from his agent comes through, Kingston realizes his shot with Taylor may be now or never. He has dreams, but so does Taylor. Her dream helped him when he was at one of the lowest points in his life and his career. Now, he has to make one of the most difficult choices in his personal and professional life. Does he have the right to ask her to compromise her dreams for his, or will the curse of being a hockey player come true and he is destined to break both of their hearts?

Great quick read, loved that it breaks the stereotypes!
I absolutely adored Cruising on Ice and the wonderful chemistry between Taylor and Kingston. They have that amazing familiarity friendship with each other that is a perfect base for anything. It was so fun to see each of them grow and learn more about each other, themselves, and their goals. This was one book I had a hard time putting it down, I really shouldn't have started it so late in the evening haha. It took great self control to put it down and go to sleep (knowing I would be awake early and could finish reading it helped a lot though). One of my favorite things about Cruising On Ice is that author Kerry Evelyn wrote it in such a great way that really breaks through the stereotype of rude and stuck up cheerleaders and other athletes. I love when books do that and she did it amazingly. So even if you aren't a fan of cheerleaders or hockey players, you'll probably still enjoy this book, I know I did. It was fun to hear about all of the aspects of a cruise, cheer competition, and how hockey works. I learned a lot about all of those, as well as got to relax for a few hours and enjoy a beautifully written sweet romance.

Taylor and Kingston made you fall in love with them right away! They've been friends for most of their lives and this book builds their relationship on that long standing friendship. They're so adorable together!

Overall, this book is pretty sweet. I really liked Kingston and Taylor. They had loads of chemistry and were extremely enjoyable together. The romance was sweet and had good pacing.

One of my favorite things about the book was the kissing scenes. They were hot but super tender. Also, the romance pacing was good. It was a nice falling slowly but also knowing that there were feeling for each other. Kingston really cared for Taylor and you could see it.

Additionally, I really liked the side characters and friends. The family and sweetness is rare in romance and this was present. The other thing I liked is the reality of playing hockey. Being an athlete is hard and the author showed that really well.

The only criticism I had in the book was the miscommunication at the end. This was such a cliche and could have been avoided. Also, the ending was super abrupt. Like everything was going well and it just came crashing. Despite the failure around the 80% mark, I highly recommend this book. I will check other books by this author for sure.

Such a sweet friends to lovers romance! Who doesn’t love that!? Kingston and Taylor’s story gives me all the feels. I sat down with this book and read it in hours. Kingston and Taylor have always been friends only, of course Tay was crushing big time on him. It just worked out that her sister, Kingstons bestie, got sick right before her birthday trip. Fate has a way of things for sure. Kingston takes on the roll of her trip buddy but things heat up and it’s all the sweetest. Of course there are ups and downs and missed opportunities to talk about the important things but that’s what made this story so fast paced and easy to read. You’ll love it! Definitely read this and the rest of the series, you won’t regret it!

I really hoped for more with this story! I’m a big fan of sweet sports romance and the writing and pace were pretty good, but when it came to the main fight that was the crux of their fallout- the big hurdle Taylor & Kingston need to overcome before their happily ever after- well, it was just annoying!

Taylor the heroine came across as selfish and petty and honestly it seemed like a silly hurdle for them to be together-

It was a cute story, with some fun parts, but over all, I just didn’t love it!
I wanted more connection for the leads & a little more swoon! And Kingston came across as kinda just like putty- not super manly but just kinda meh

Great hockey/cheer romance. Both of these were elite athletes, Kingston is a hockey player just waiting for the moment to make the bigs. Taylor is on the national cheer team competing for international medals. She was the annoying little sister always hanging with her big sister and friends, one of whom was Kingston. He recognized her worth as she helped improve his mindset and drastically improve his game. But is there a chance for anything more? I really liked the story and seeing some of the couples from the other stories. One thing I didn’t like was the language, I can handle the occasional mild swearing, but I didn’t like the taking of the Lord’s name in vain. It is clean with there definitely being the possible closed door action before marriage.

Taylor Ranford has had a crush on Kingston Brewer forever. When her sister falls ill before their celebration birthday cruise, Kingston offers to take her place. Kingston and Taylor have some problems when they don’t talk to each other about the future. They are living in the moment. However, that moment ends when Kingston gets traded. Will they be able to figure out how to make their relationship work living in two different states?

I did enjoy the storyline and thought the plot was different enough that it kept me flipping those pages, reaching & wanting that download for the 'Bonus Epilogue'. It is definitely meant to be a compliment about the plot being different enough especially since my favorite genre is sports romance (especially centered around ice hockey) so I have read alot of books in this genre. Loved that the author wrote from dual POVs, personally I think it adds so much more to the story knowing what both the H & h are thinking and feeling. Taylor & Kingston's banter and their chemistry are awesome, although I would consider this book only in the mild steam range. Kingston is more of a sweet and swoonworthy guy; always having the perfect words to make Taylor (or really, female's) just melt. Definitely recommend reading Cruising on Ice by Kerry Evelyn!
Even though I did receive an advanced review copy of this book, I also purchased the book/read with Kindle Unlimited and am voluntarily leaving my own unsolicited opinion with my voluntary review.
