4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 188 ratings

I’ve trusted nature spirits with my life, until the storm king decided I had to die.

Did you ever wonder what living on the streets of Berlin is like? My name is Rika and I’ve been homeless for eight years. It’s not too bad, since I’ve got salamanders to warm me in winter and dryads to protect me from stragglers. People say I’m crazy, because to everyone else, those nature spirits are invisible. But they’re real. Real and
dangerous, as I learn when I accidentally cross the plans of the Erlking, an ancient and hate-filled spirit. Now he and his deadly storm are after me.
My only chance are the Spirit Seekers, an elite group of soldiers trained to battle nature’s wrath. Since their precious commander is missing in action, they need me to be their eyes. Signing up with the Spirit Seekers is the opposite of run and hide, but they offer me protection and the tools to fight for my survival. All I have to do is betray my old spirit friends and try not to die.

Join Rika and the Spirit Seekers in this action-packed stormy urban fantasy adventure and start your supernatural trip to Europe today!

Fresh, light, quick, and easy ❤️

Fresh, light, quick, and easy ❤️
This was a super fun read for me and the fact that it was set in Germany, as opposed to your average UF novel, was actually pretty refreshing. I love how Janna's descriptions made me feel like I was there in person. Now, imma tell people I've been to Berlin. 😆And that LOVELY cover. I love Rika's hair. 🥺What upset me a bit was that there were some scenes where I was like 'YAS' only to find they had been faded out–scenes that could have held significant emotional impact. Everything was also pretty simply put, but that isn't a necessarily bad thing. On the other hand, this is definitely one of those lighter reads I would pick up for a breather from the usual heavy novels I devour. I found it VERY easy to sink into it, and needless to say, there were a few 🛳️ things I was looking forward to that didn't happen...😭...yet.

This is a wonderful story! The protagonist, Rika, instantly drew me into her fascinating world. I was invested and eager to find out what was to happen in the battle against angry storm spirits. The world in this novel is very like our world, except for blatant activity by and human knowledge of the natural/spirit world. What we consider natural phenomena, such as extreme weather, are actually spirit attacks against humanity. It was also interesting to get a glimpse into Berlin, where I have never been. I highly recommend this urban fantasy and am looking forward to the next in her series!

This is a fast paced urban fantasy, with a truly unique heroine. Rika has a particularly unusual background, which makes for a rather fascinating heroine!
I enjoyed the different premise regarding the spirits and otherworldly beings mentioned in the book too, and it was refreshing to visit a different city and country from the usual locations.

An enjoyable book, it ends on a small cliffhanger (about a 3/5 on my trauma scale) which is more of a book hook than anything else.
A worthy read for the urban fantasy fan, especially those who enjoy a different perspective when it comes to folklore.

This book was a fantastic read, which I could not put down. Catastrophic worldly events such as extreme weather and natural disasters, which would normally be attributed to Mother Nature, are in fact the result of 'spirit' activity. The author has woven an intricate tapestry of fantasy in the modern world, offering the reader a true delight. Using a combination of folklore and imagination, Ms. Ruth has introduced a variety of spirit types, who all have their place in the balance of nature. (Dryads, Nymphs, Salamanders, Sylphs, Storm Sprites etc.

To keep these wild forces of nature under control and prevent property damage and injury/death, there are spirit seekers who train at an academy. They weaken and capture the troublesome spirits, to remove them from society. There's just one problem with this. Rika isn't like the others. Having been raised not to fear the spirits, her perspective is quite different from that of the seekers. Watching the world through Rika's eyes shows us how easy things can be misconstrued. How a misunderstanding between human and spirit could pave the way for complete intolerance.

I was fully immersed from cover to cover and loved it. I recommend this book to lovers of urban fantasy, and anyone wanting to try something a little different. Bring on book two!

Love this author's writing, interesting topic, swear there was a storm last night and here I was on page 64 and started thinking about spirits, this fascinating story and then again this current night storm and soon it quickly died down, (odd?). Read this awesome story, amazing writing!

First, I love that this story is set in Berlin. It’s so nice to have an urban fantasy set somewhere other than the US, the UK, or Canada. Second, I love that this story sees both sides and is not afraid of the greys in between the black and white. I also really liked the diversity of the supporting characters. You don’t often see that either. Most of all, though, I loved the storyline and the friendships being developed. I definitely recommend this book, and can’t wait to start the next one.

In certain ways, it reminds me of Nina Kiriki Hoffman’s 2-book series, A Red Heart of Memories and Past the Size of Dreaming

I got this book for free along with a bunch of others. I am looking for some new authors to add to my favorites. This is the only one that has made the cut. Urban fantasy at its finest!

This was a most unusual story. Set in Berlin, it focuses on a young woman who can see and speak with nature spirits. Her journey leads her from being homeless to working with the spirit seekers, a group of people who have an affinity for capturing them. She struggles to find a place to belong but doesn't know if it is with the seekers or the streets. Excellent tale of good versus evil, but who decides that? Loved it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesomely original - urban fantasy at its best!

I picked up this book because I was excited to read a book set in another city, other than London! This story takes place in Berlin. It's clear the author is very familiar with the city and the whole story is so well grounded!

The protagonist is Rika. I've never met anyone like Rika. She was torn away from her Romany family in her young teens and took refuge on the streets. She is street smart, but also endearingly vulnerable.

Rika can talk to spirits - we're not talking ghosts here but a multitude of other creatures like slyphs etc - her skills are rare. As such, the local Spirit Seekers enlist her aid when their leader goes awol. But does Rika want to capture the spirits that have kept her company through the darkness of the streets?

A fast paced read, with plenty of action. I couldn't put it down. No romance to speak of in Book 1. I can't recommend it enough!

Side note, the author is writing in her second language. Just wow. I am so bowled over by that.

Run, don't walk, to pick up this brilliant read!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Erlking in Berlin
Reviewed in Germany on August 23, 2021
Rika is a girl living on the streets of Berlin. She has a special talent: Rika can see spirits.
She helps a group of Spirit Seekers, who want to stop the destruction of Berlins Central Station (and kill many people with it) by spirits.
It seems, there is a war going on. Earth-, Air-, Fire and Water spirits are attacking the humans. But why, and why now? Luka, one of the Seekers, doesn’t care. He just wants to do his job. But Rika sees things differently.
The spirit seekers want her to join them. Rika isn’t sure.
But then they come up against an old, powerful enemy: the Erlking himself. And he is seeking out Rika especially.
Together with Aeola, the sylph (and, eventually, the Spirit Seekers) Rika will have to find a way to stop him, or Berlin will be no more.
The story is action packed, fast-paced and also good fun.
The book is well researched, and (being from Berlin myself) I especially enjoyed knowing all the places. I will definitely look at them with different eyes now (maybe I, too, can spot a sylph floating around somewhere).
I loved reading it, and I am looking forward to the next one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great world-building and characterisation
Reviewed in Australia on June 8, 2022
Loved the first book to the Spirit Seeker series. Rika is such a well developed character and I love her backstory. The world created by Janna Ruth where spirits exist and are responsible for natural disasters and Spirit Seekers are the world's defenders was so original and engrossing. I particularly loved Berlin as a backdrop and being able to vicariously travel with Rika. Can't wait for more.

3.0 out of 5 stars fighting nature?
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 10, 2022
I always feel a little uneasy with the concept of fighting against nature, even though there are hints that the characters may eventually come to see that this is a self-destructive mistake. With this as the overall plot, it made it hard for me to really get into the story. Might work better for readers who see themselves as separate from nature.
