Review

"It's rare to come across an author whose skill at writing reaches this level. The text just flows. Some authors have this sort of grating, forced feeling to their writing. Prater's use of English, for lack of a better metaphor, flows like a river. You are carried, floated, into an amazing and complex world filled with spells, rituals and vivid characters." - The Turned Page ★★★★★

"This book checked all my boxes : strong mouthy heroine, banter that made me smile, tons of romantic tension, a deep magical world I wanted to go live in, and GREAT characters. Bran is my new book boyfriend." -
Jessica (Goodreads) ★★★★★

"Wonderful imagery, intriguing believable characters, and incredible romantic fast-paced plot that sucks you into a world of witches and holds you there until the last word! Magical!" -
Julie B (Amazon) ★★★★★

"Delicious romantic tension! Prater has a great command of tension in this story. When Marnie and Bran were in a scene together I could not look away. The house could have been on fire, I could not look away. I got nothing done while I read Street Witch." -
Beth (Goodreads) ★★★★★

"S.L. Prater has crafted a luscious tale of witchcraft and forbidden love, filled with humor, charm, and a spirited heroine you know from page one you're going to love." -
Melanie (Amazon) ★★★★★

"Marnie is a badass and I loved how she was the one who made the story happen, rather than it happening TO her (passive main characters are my pet peeve). The love story was endearing and fun to ship and refreshingly free of cliches, and the leading man was book-hot." -
Erin B. (Amazon) ★★★★★

"I stayed up until two in the morning just to finish it as the story is so gripping. If you like magic, fantasy, and intrigue this book is for you. I cannot wait for more books in the series. Marnie is such a strong and interesting character."
-Lacy (Amazon) ★★★★★

Highly recommend this delightful fantasy with a lovely romance between the two very likable main characters. Found author’s concept of earned arm bands and finger to forehead as excellent aspects of world building. Enjoy!

I really enjoyed this one. It's an old attitude with a new outlook. It's the same prejudices when it comes to witches and the church but it's also different. I love how the government is set up. It's a really good start.

In a nutshell, Marnie's best friend is in line to become the Lord Emperor and will need her help to reshape how society views their witches. The Cloth wants to stifle the street witches however the kingdom needs their help with certain evils. But the witches must be careful, a magic trick benefiting the wrong person lands street witches hanging from the gallows.

In the beginning, I spent a considerable amount of time trying to decipher if Bran was Marnie's actual brother (blood relation). Listen...I read Credence without reading the warnings, so I was worried we were walking into the same scenario. But no worries here folks- no blood or marriage relation here. Once that was cleared up, I thoroughly enjoyed their interactions.

This was a great palate cleanser in between some heavier and tense books. A fun fast-paced weekend read!

I really enjoyed this fantasy world. It's an interesting combination of our past and an alternative steampunk future. The characters are intriguing. I would have expected more depth in the backgrounds given, as this is an ongoing series, but there is definitely enough to intrigue. We definitely root for our main characters to find a way past classism and prejudice to achieve their goals and gain acceptance for their relationships. Can't wait to hear more about Jack.

I enjoyed this first installment of Prater’s magical, gaslamp romance series. The stage the author sets is impeccably designed, complete with a Victorian, Steampunk type vibe, forbidding religious and societal mores amid a rich, magic based fantasy world. I found lead character, Marnie, to be a lovely and interesting character. Her secret relationship with Bran was one that, while delicious from the start, grew all the way to the spectacular end. The fantastical new Street Witch series is one I can’t wait to read more of.

The story centers on Marnie, Bran, and Jack. These are all well developed characters and they are supported by a cast of lesser characters who are much more than throwaway participants. Brother Doyle is definitely one of my favorites.

The world view is slowly revealed to be a strange mix of magic, steam punk, politics, and religion. The Catholic Church is clearly a basis for The Cloth even with whispers of the Spanish Inquisition. The story manages to mix social commentary with an engrossing narrative.

This has romance as a significant aspect of the story but is is not the end all or the major. I enjoyed reading this and look forward to reading the following books.

Great start to a series, even if there's just 2 books planned. The beginning was a bit rocky, I had a hard time settling until the world and the characters. Usually I love a story that just plops the reader into it, but this one took more effort to grab me. Once I was about halfway through, I was in. Kinda disappointed in the fade to black night between Marnie and Bran, but I think that's because I've been spoiled by the other books I've been reading. But because of that, I could probably share this book with my younger sister-in-law safely and she could enjoy it too!

4.0 out of 5 stars One of the most unique magic systems I've ever read
Reviewed in Germany on November 14, 2023
This was a near perfect read, and unexpectedly so. I thought I was in for a quick witchy romance, but in actuality this book delivered even more than that. Not only does it have some of the most lovable characters, who are faced with tough decisions throughout the story, that I've ever encountered, but also a magic system that was well thought out and extremely unique.
The most astonishing thing to me is, that the author was able to develop a world so vibrant and characters so witty and authentic in such few pages. The only thing I wished for, was for the side characters to get a little more room, which probably could have been done within a longer book. But still, as it is, I really loved reading this book and will definitely pick up the next installments.

I bought a big range of books recently. This is the only one I've actively recommended to my family & written a review for. The characters are engaging and the world is interesting. I've immediately started the second book. Talented writer, fun read!

A really entertaining read!
The plot and the setting were really interesting, and the progression of the various subplots felt really natural. Marnie and Bran and Jack are totally adorable, and I can't wait to see more of them in the future books!

4.0 out of 5 stars Witches, persecution and love

I always find the banter amongst her characters to be top notch and this one was no exception.
Marnie is strong, independent and brave. She puts herself in dangerous situations to save those in trouble.
Bran is the perfect compliment to her and loves her so fiercely he attends by her decisions even when they frighten him.
Cannot wait to see where book 2 goes.
