He vowed to never love again...

Robert, the Earl of Clydesdale, has sworn off love. A marriage of convenience is more to his liking. Only his betrothed is in love with another. Now Robert has a choice, either lock his heart away and live in misery, or take a risk and fight for the woman he loves.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"I'm not going to lie, I'm a sucker for angst. So I think Robert and Julie's dreaded wedding was my favorite part of the story. Julie's iconic dress, Robert wallowing in self pity, and Evie's involvement in anything made this entire sequence perfect." - Michelle Lokeigh, beta reader

"Prepare for a gauntlet of emotions starting with stress from family obligations, desperation, turmoil, which are followed by a bargain, obstacles, plot twists & hope. The characters are intriguing & pull you in. Excellent read!" - Amazon Reviewer ★★★★

"This is a leave me alone and let me read book." - Amazon Reviewer ★★★★★

"This is an emotional & spicy read, not a sweet regency romance but the depth of plot & characters provides a page turning, well written book which I highly recommend." - Amazon Reviewer ★★★★

She hadn’t been able to protect her sister, when their father sent her away. Now John had gone to war. They had loved each other their whole lives, planning to marry. For several years she had thwarted her father’s plans to marry her off. In the end, without her knowledge or concern for her feelings, he had betrothed her to Robert Clydesdale, the son of a Duke.
Clydesdale had been a romantic when he was younger, wanting a loving wife and children. A family, something he’d never had growing up. But after a finding the woman he loved had presented herself as something she wasn’t, betraying his love and trust, he had become a realist. He had to marry and produce an heir. Since he hadn’t been moving toward that goal quickly enough for his father. So Robert and Julie find themselves joined in a marriage of convenience with a private agreement between them. He would bring her sister to live with them and she would give him an heir.
Julie has grit, intelligent and will not be put off when has something to say. Robert is slightly bitter about his past encounter with love and looking to fall in love with Julie. One encounter, one hug, and Mary touch’s Robert’s heart. Mary, has Down Syndrome. Robert sees the love and care Julie has for sister. And as the weeks pass his feelings for Julie start to take root. The years Mary has spent locked away in an asylum have taken their toll. But society would be even harsher on her without Robert’s support. The story offers a glimpse of life two hundred years ago for learning disabled people and those with other mental disabilities. Through the trials and tribulations Julie and Robert face from the scandal of Mary’s presence in the tons eyes, to a jealous cousin they find they are stronger together. The tale is intriguing, touches the emotions and offers hope for happy endings even in the face of bad beginnings. A good read with lively characters, spicy romance, the pain of loss, acceptance and a slowly growing love.

Julie Weston has been in love with John her neighbor since she was young. They were going to elope until her father locked her up. Her father brought John a commission to the army, he asked her to wait for him.

Her father takes her to house party and she finds out she is to be married. A marriage of convenience to Earl of Clydesdale. They each set rules. Julie requested that her sister Mary be taken out of the asylum and live with her and any children in the country. Robert requested that she doesn't cheat.

Julie and Robert go through with the marriage and wears what she wants black wedding dress. Robert thinks she doesn't want him.

John visits and asked her to come back to him. Robert gives her the opportunity to have annulment since they have no children. Robert feels he won by default she she was with child.

Sweet love story and watch what they had to overcome to find love with each other.

I really enjoyed this story. Great characters and an insight into how things might have been for residents of asylum during this time. Nice ending as well. Enjoy!

"Deal with the Earl" tells the story of Julie and Robert... and Julie's beloved sister, Mary. The book is a bit of a slow burn with elements of frustration because Robert completely misinterprets practicality every interaction with his wife.

There are some really great characters in this-- the dowager grandmother and the saucy redheaded cousin who helps Julie with her wedding dress... but the story, while entertaining, has little depth. Sure there are twists and turns, a cohesive plot, and a satisfactory ending, but it falls a little flat in terms of meat. Given the length of the novella, that's probably the main issue. There was no time to really build emotional connection with the characters... because the plot flew by as the reader was moved from one harrowing moment to another.

It's a decent storyline, and the writing is fair, but it would have been much more engaging if it had more detail and if Robert's character had been less paperdoll flat and more developed so the reader could have a better view of his internal conflicts and his changes of heart as they developed over time. It almost seemed like he was the same guy throughout the book, and at the end, suddenly he was different. Working in more character development would've helped flesh out the characters and the book more. The same goes for Julie, though we see more development with her... still. The characters were flat.

I should note this book contains physical abuse, a sexual assault scene, and a miscarriage, which may be triggering to some.

I’ve held this book in my reading list for quite some time. I am so glad I didn’t return it. This is a new author for me and I truly enjoy reading her novel. Ms Bosque held my interest throughout the storyline. I love a book when I can picture the characters as I read. I was upset in the beginning, when Julie’s father locked her in a room and brought John, the love of her life a commission. But as it turned out marrying the Earl Clydesdale was the best decision for her, even though she was mad that her father forced her into an arranged marriage. I appreciated the extra scene at the end. I kind of wish it was part of the story.

Well written, interesting, loveable characters. A couple of cliche tropes but a book has to have some intrigue. Also there could’ve been more dialogue, instead of the pages of inner monologue. I look forward to reading more by this author.

I had never heard of this author but now I will be buying all the books in this series...to start. Enjoyed this so very much!

Basically, enemies to lovers kind of trope. She is in love with someone else and her father is a bully, tyrant, abuser of the worst order. She HAS to marry within her rank.

There is back and forth with miscommunication, so the couple is often at odds.

A few scenarios thrown in that make no sense to me. Cousin Eric didn't contribute anything to this book.

There are some minor editing errors.

“Life was a gamble. One never knew what tomorrow would bring. That shouldn’t make her afraid to live, though.”

I loved this book so much! Sadie Bosque is a gorgeous writer and her books are always unconventional, surprising, even distressing at times. She isn't afraid to deal with difficult topics and her characters are flawed, sometimes not very likeable, but always vivid and so very human. I loved Robert and his broken heart and Julie as well, even if I didn't like her very much at the beginning. She seemed so unfair to Robert, but of course her reasons are understandable. And her sister Mary is adorable! She’s a wonderful addition to the book and her disability is addressed with tact, respect and realism. Since I listened to the audiobook, I want to add the narrators are gorgeous and the dual narration improves the experience quite a lot. And there’s also a deleted scene! I can't wait for the next audiobooks!

It’s novel to read that one’s childhood infatuation doesn’t have to govern the leading lady’s love ending. It’s good to be able to recognise others that one can fall in love with.

content warning: period accurate terminology for mental health and possible someone with downs' syndrome which is still used in lightly derogatory terms to self deprecate which was uncomfortable if accurate, you know?

really gorgeous, fluid prose, very smexy but also deeply personal character stuff...

definitely going to read the spin offs and follow ups!
