Rue Cavendish is blind. And beautiful. And she can sing. Boy, can she sing! But she is alone. In a big city. San Francisco. She has learned by sheer force of will and determination how to navigate and master this big city independently while completely in the dark, completely alone.

Then she meets a handsome stranger in the bar where she works as a lounge singer. Josh Quinn is everything Rue is not—tall, outgoing, popular, talkative.

Rue must choose between her perfectly ordered life and a chance at love. What will she choose?

Rue investigates four intersecting lives and how connections can be forged and broken in an instant. The story charts the emotional and romantic development of four risk-takers and how they swiftly discover the inevitable consequences of their actions.

Rue is also the story of how a woman who is blind finally learns to see.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Barker's prose is lovely and lighthearted and an absolute delight to indulge in. It makes for an almost compulsively readable story. There's a wistful, magical quality to this novel that somewhat defies genre character. Elements of literary fiction and romance abound, making for broader appeal. ~ The BookLife Prize

Women who like contemporary novels about already-strong women taking the next step in their evolution will find Rue realistic, absorbing, and packed with relationship insights. ~ D. Donovan, Senior Reviewer, Midwest Book Review

This book made me feel things I didn't know I could because it's so much more than just a love story and that appealed to me in so many ways. I think what's made an impression on me the most is the way the author has written it and this is a book I know I'll remember years down the line and recommend people to read if they love a good romance novel. ~ @melisbookreviews on Instagram

The descriptors are so well done that the 'wormy smell' of rain reminded me of my childhood in Seattle. Learning how a blind person sees the world was intriguing and fascinating. Early on I became invested in the main character Rue, as she lets go of her sedate, structured world in favor of the unknown around the corner. A truly delightful story. ~ Carol D, Goodreads

This was a lovely, complicated but beautiful women's fiction/romance novel, and I thoroughly enjoyed having a character that we could admire...at no point did the author forget that our protagonist is blind, and the tiny nuances and casual mentions brought life to Rue's story. I would recommend to other readers, especially adult female readers who need a good book to curl up to! ~ Sasha T. Y. Fortune, book blogger and reviewer

Thank you to #AmyQBarker for providing me with this #gifted copy of Rue.

I loved that the main character was blind and that the reader gets to see into normal every day tasks that she does with little to no issues. For me, any of these items would be almost impossible for me to do if I couldn’t see. Even though this wasn’t the main part of the story, it was actually very humbling for me.

As the story begins and the love interest is introduced, I wasn’t sure how to feel. On one hand, he seems like a great guy – a great catch. On the other hand, he also seems like a player. I can’t stand guys like this!

I was really eager to keep reading to determine which way it was going to go. And I’m so glad I did. It was an interesting read and I was very surprised by the ending.

For readers that like Romance’s that don’t have a clear path to the end of the story, you should pick this one up. It’s very entertaining.

That was the real question: whether it was real.

When Rue Cavendish meets a handsome stranger in the San Francisco bar where she works as a lounge singer, she must choose between her perfectly ordered life and a chance at love. Josh Quinn is everything Rue is not – tall, outgoing, popular, talkative. Oh, and he can see. Rue, blind since birth, decides to let her walls down with Josh, diving into the relationship with her whole heart. Will her fierce independence and steadfast resilience survive?

Kevin Warren is trying to save his marriage. When his wife, Alyssa, pursued him in college, he was flabbergasted. After all, she was beautiful and popular, and she had just broken up with the basketball team’s point guard. What was she doing with Kevin – a quiet, soft-spoken, nerdy engineer? Nevertheless, being the determined competitor that she was, Alyssa always got what she wanted. Back then, it was Kevin Warren, but now, only a few short years later, where do her ambitions lie?

Rue investigates four intersecting lives and how connections can be forged and broken in an instant. The story charts the emotional and romantic development of risk-takers and how they swiftly discover the inevitable consequences of their actions.

Rue is also the story of how a woman who is blind finally learns to see.

Rue is a fictional novel by Amy Q. Baker, centred around love and romance but most importantly Rue's life. This book made me feel things I didn't know I could because it's so much more than just a love story and that appealed to me in so many ways.
The main character, Rue, has such a unique soul and personality that it draws you in not only because of her outlook on life, but because she in herself is like a diamond in the rough.
The plot is so captivating that you can finish win one sitting (like I did) because even though it seems simple, we're given an interesting plot development when it comes to blending the lives of the characters together, especially when it comes to the main characters who seem to be living different lives that wouldn't intersect, but the author writes the story so well that you think it's completely plausible.
Honestly though, I'm trying to put into words how this book made me feel but I just can't. Yes there are a couple of things that could have been better, but overall I absolutely undoubtedly loved it.
I think what's made an impression on me the most is the way the author has written it and this is a book I know I'll remember years down the line and recommend people to read if they love a good romance novel.
