Off Plan (Whispering Key) Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 2,045 ratings

Falling for a man was nowhere in my five-step plan.

I came to Whispering Key from O’Leary as a career move. Mason Bloom, doctor to the stars at a swanky resort on a private island? Heck yes.

What I did not come for was romance, because I have been there, done that, have an ex-girlfriend to prove it, and frankly was distinctly underwhelmed by the whole endeavor.

Yet from the moment I set foot on this island, nothing goes the way I’d expected.

The resort’s falling apart. The island’s inhabitants are ridiculous... and ridiculously charming. The whole place is awash in stories of shipwrecks and treasure.

Then there’s Fenn Reardon: Gorgeous. Infuriating. Male.

And did I mention infuriating?

The man is the eye of the hurricane upending my life. He pushes every one of my buttons. He makes me feel crazy. Out of control. And more alive than I have ever felt before.

I find myself craving his company, longing for his touch, kissing him on the beach, wanting him in my bed… and questioning just how straight I really am.

Falling for Fenn was not in my plans… but I’m starting to think the key to happiness might be going off plan entirely.

Great start!
I'm no longer a May Archer newbie ❤️❤️❤️This was a fun, sassy, witty read that put a smile on my face the entire time. Fenn and Mason were opposites extraordinare, but they clicked in place so perfectly. The walls they built to protect their hearts slowly came down and watching them realize how in love they were with each other warmed my heart.Their was small town goodness, great characters, lots of laugher and steamy firsts. I look for to seeing which cousins of Fenn's get their chance at love next.

This book was so ridiculously and deliciously good. Fenn and Mason are opposites attract, bisexual awakening, enemies to lovers perfection and watching them stumble through to their HEA was painfully beautiful. They are real, relatable people who have flaws, but are really trying to just do their best as the messy humans they are. Mason is a doctor who is excited to start his new life at a posh resort on Whispering Key, an island in the Gulf. His first clue things are not what they appear is when the driver sent to pick him up at the airport looks like a serial killer wearing flip flops. Fenn is a geologist working as a tour boat captain on Whispering Key and there is definitely not a posh resort on this island. Fenn gets one look at neatly pressed Mason in his shiny loafers and is annoyed instantly but also instantly attracted. This book was filled with all the sweet moments, painful pasts, steamy scenes, quirky townsfolk, supportive family and friends, small town goodness, character growth and missteps, snort worthy ridiculousness, and all the love. Get ready to feel all the things along with Fenn and Mason - you’ll swoon, cry, laugh, grit your teeth, and sigh (out of happiness and frustration). I’ll definitely be continuing this series. I cannot wait to see what’s next for the Goodman men.

4.75 stars.

Oh my gods, I loved this book so much. It was sweet, it was romantic, it was hilarious, it was every single thing I wanted. I hoped I'd get a fun little island story, and I got that and SO much more. I should say, I was ready to start rampaging about Big Rafe and what a con artist he was and it was so much more than "bruising egos" that he did to people and how dare he talk to Fenn like that, and then the schmuck goes and has an arc! 😂 Seriously, that moment when he talks to his boys made me tear up, it was so beautiful. I'd already been willing to admit he was a complex character that I was leaning more towards hating, but the writing... ugghhhhh this writing is so freaking good it hurts.

The way Fenn pines and years and wants Mason so much was EVERYTHING. Honestly, this would've been five stars if not for three tiny things that kept it from being absolutely perfect in my eyes:

- The treasure hunt thing? I'm glad it was resolved quickly when they found it, but it just took up too much space throughout the story and I didn't really care about the mystery or the backstory there.

- There were too many instances in the middle of smut scenes when they would stop to give a one-liner that just didn't come off very cool or funny or sexy or anything, so it just felt like constant interruptions to hear something really cheesy or unfunny.

- The stupid Victoria scene? I hated her so I didn't give a crap that she was happy and her phone call was all for her own sake. I didn't care to see her redeemed, she didn't deserve it, and she wasn't.

Still, I really loved the characters, the plot, the writing, the YEARNING. It was so good, I have no other words. Highly recommend.

I started reading May Archer when she wrote a book with Lucy Lennox. GREAT. I loved those books so much that I read the first book in the "Sunday Brothers" series to see how much I would like May Archer on her own. Couldn't put it down. Great characters in a great small town with a great (hot) love story. Come to find out that Gage from Sunday Brothers #1 is from Whispering Keys (this series). So I read all the Sunday Brothers books that are out so far (waiting patiently for the next one) then started reading this book. So funny and lovely that I read all three books in this series, of course. Come to find out that Mason from this book is from the O'Leary series from May Archer. Anyway from the extra story for Fenn and Mason I know I would love the O'Leary series as well. Oh Lord I read all of these backwards. I always read in order. Lol. May Archer is really an excellent writer. I enjoyed all of the books that I've read of hers and can highly recommend them. Read them in order or not. Just enjoy. ♥ ♥ ♥

Two totally opposite, broken guys are put together in an almost love - hate relationship. But through a the ups and downs learn that they really can learn to live and trust again.
Beautiful story

Mason and Fin just seem to rub each other the wrong way. Yet there seems to be something there. The rest of the story is full of the ups and downs of their relationship. Meanwhile, Mayor Rafe is trying to bring the Key back to life. A great moment of action leads to a very satisfying ending. The audio was well done.

This is a modern queer romance, the first book in the “Wispering Key” series which should be read in order after the “Love in O’Leary” series. Mason is chasing a dream but instead finds himself in an uncomfortable situation. The heart-wounded Fenn is a great foil for Mason. The world building is pretty great, I want to visit this community and it’s people! The story’s end is unexpected and amazing; definitely worth an afternoon to read it!

This one was a really slow starter for me. Enemies to lovers is not one of my favorite tropes, and I had a hard time connecting with the story and the characters at first. The bi-awakening portion also dragged on a bit too long for me/was over-justified as well. But! May Archer is one of my favorite authors for a reason, and eventually my persistence paid off. The book didn't really get good for me until around the 50% mark, and the overuse of the "Loafers" nickname in the beginning very much impeded my progress through that 50%.

I did enjoy the book, and I would say that the back 50% has that May Archer charm I love so much (a combination of kindness, fun, and eccentric secondary characters), but the struggle to get into it combined with a bit of a convenient ending left a few potholes in an otherwise lovely story. If you enjoy enemies to lovers, bi-awakening, small town hijinks, and pirate treasure, you'll love this one. If you find yourself struggling a bit as I did, keep going. It's worth it in the end.

This is the first book in a spin-off series from the Love in O'Leary series, and while you definitely don't have to read the previous series in order to enjoy this one, it's a great series that I would recommend to anyone.

The story is interesting. The main characters are fun and so are all of the secondary characters and the rest of the community. Can’t wait to read the next one. Just discovered this author and like her writing style.

God i loved this book. It's one of my favorite tropes. Small town. Crazy residents. GFY. Sweet sweet love story. Just brilliant.

My first solo book by May and definately not my last. I'm excited for more!

I loved Fenn from the off. Slightly grumpy but funny with it. Winner! He was wallowing in self pity stuck on an Island feeling like he had no hope of a decent future. He didn't see what he actually had until Mason came along and showed him.

Mason was wonderful too. Equally lost in self pity he was at least trying though by starting a new life in the Key. Obviously he was a bit like a fish out of water at first but when he meets grumpy Fenn things start to change.

I loved how these two clashed at first in the funniest of ways. I had so many laughs. Both as snarky as each other the passion and fire was inevitable. Poor Fenn was in denial and pushed Mason away. Thankfully Mason wasn't a quitter! He knew what he had and went for it. I loved his story. How he accepted the feelings he got from Fenn and wanted to try.

So sweet both of them! The supporting characters were funny and loveable. The Key is the place to be. Its home! I'd slot right in with the crazy and i loved every second.

The whole story made me swoon. It made me smile. It made me happy. Can't wait to read the rest! Now on to Beale and Toby!
