Smokejumper and wolf shifter Carl Jensen falls hard when his parachute is blown over a ridge by freak winds, then falls harder for the pretty rancher who rescues him when he’s injured during his accidental landing. Michelle Hernandez is raising Pashmina goats and alpacas on a high range farm when the handsome smokejumper, injured and traveling in his wolf skin, nearly gets taken down by her “guard” alpaca stud. Michelle begins to doubt she saw what she thought she saw when the “wolf” turns into an unconscious, hunky naked man, but she hauls him back to her farmhouse to administer some TLC despite her reservations about having a strange man in her home.
After Carl awakens and a less fraught introduction occurs, it appears that the instant attraction between the two is going to be thwarted by circumstances, misadventures, disasters, betrayal, and evil machinations, but Carl's wolf’s insistence that he has found his true mate propels him to go to any length to protect his lover and secure her for himself despite all the obstacles and her own hesitation.
The characters are well drawn, the romance is sweet, and the sex is hot. A happy aside is incidental but very accurate information about farming Pashmina goats, alpacas and musk oxen for their valuable fibers and the quality, characteristics and uses of yarn spun from them (the reviewer is a spinner & knitter). The author obviously does meticulous research on any technical topic before she writes whether it's firefighting or animal husbandry, which helps to make the setting and the characters feel so real.
The reviewer listened to the audio book version, which is read with distinct voices that make Carl and Michelle's love scenes even more romantic. So happy to see this book beginning a new series —Rocky Mountain Smokejumpers— by the author of the ongoing Bearpaw Ridge Firefighters series that I have been enjoying so much.
