Absinthe Minded: A Single Dad, Second Chance Romance (Bourbon Street Bad Boys' Club Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 557 ratings

Gabe Marchionni, New Orleans’ most eligible bachelor, has a problem…
…and it’s wrapped in a pink blanket.

What in the heck is the reluctant new head of a mafia family supposed to do with an infant?

For anyone else it would be simple. But with enemies around every corner, Gabe can't exactly go find the woman he dumped years ago and convince her to give him a second chance.

Not when it means putting her life in danger.

Maggie Guthrie is broke, exhausted, and raising her deceased sister’s kids. She’s also a reporter by day and desperately needs to get the scoop on one of the most illustrious families in the French Quarter, the Marchionnis…
…even if that means exposing decades of blackmail, extortion, and worse.

So when Gabe, her
ex-whatever-the-heck-he-was, shows up on her doorstep with a newborn and a proposition she should refuse, Maggie knows better than to let him into her house…
...and into her life.

Especially when, falling for him again might cost her more than her heart.

Absinthe Minded is a humorous second chance romance filled with new dad fails, serious groveling, and five delicious Italian brothers--who want nothing more than to leave the "family business" behind them.

Each book in the Bourbon Street Bad Boys' series can be read separately, though they are best enjoyed when read in series order:

Hearst pens an interesting story in Absinthe Minded. I have read work from this author before, and I really enjoyed it. This is a different type of story than I'm used to from Hearst, and this was just a great story. I see that it's the first and there is more to come, so I can't wait to read the next one, and whatever comes after that. The characters were fun and also intense and charismatic. This author brings the story to life. The characters had a lot of depth, and were very realistic. I really like Maggie, and she's this strong, intelligent women raising her dead sister's children, and yet, she has this connection with Gabe. Gabe is the new head of a mafia family, and he definitely fits the part, and I can see the chemistry between him and Maggie, even though there is turmoil, and struggles. It is a very well-written story, and I enjoyed it. Very impressive story telling. Absinthe Minded is a definite recommendation by Amy's Bookshelf Reviews. I look forward to reading many more stories by this author.

(audiobook+ebook) It starts as your regular romcom–guy gets stuck with his surprise baby while the baby’s momma goes on a cruise, and he shacks up with the love of his life so she can help him while she raise’s her dead sister’s children. Okay, maybe not so regular. But still.

The situations are quite funny. Especially seeing this bad boy/mobster trying to take care of kids of various ages. Because, yes, the male character is also an unusual one for a romcom. Heir of a Sicilian family that dabs into illegal matters, Gabe is also a rich bachelor, a bar owner, and an overall good guy who wants out and hopes for a second chance with his ex-girlfriend. Maggie is more typical as a damsel in distress–except for the fact that she’s quite strong for a weak woman, and stands her ground.

So, that’s how it starts, but that’s far from how it ends. There are touches of dark right from the beginning–at least from the involvement of the mafia, and the mysterious death of Maggie’s sister and Gabe’s brother–but it becomes darker and darker when secrets are revealed. It’s still pretty light compared to straight up mafia romances.

The romance was cute with a bit of sexy. Gabe is supposed to seduce Maggie because his father asked him to, but he agrees because he still loves her. They have several romantic scenes together that’ll make you swoon.

The audiobook was quite enjoyable. Both narrators did a good job expressing both the light humor and the darker moments. I couldn’t always distinguish the kids’ voices though. That’s okay, at least they HAD kids’ voices.

This is the first book I have read from Kathryn Hearst, and I am already geared up to be reading the next one in her Bourbon Street Bad Boys Club series when it is released. Never have I ever read a Mafia book quite like this one!!!

Neither dark, nor particularly bad, Absinthe Minded still had the Mafioso characteristics, but was much lighter in it’s delivery. There were still cops to pay off, and hits to be undertaken, but, there were also fun moments where, in some of the most hilarious situations, the brothers threatened to dob each other into their mother, and the children drove the adults to drink. The whole thing had me transfixed to my reading device. I ignored jobs for the evening and stayed up way too late, because I needed to find out what the hell was going on. It was a great read.

I laughed out loud at the one-liners that absolutely and perfectly broke the tension that Ms Hearst would build throughout her book. Her writing is addictive and witty, and on the whole, I enjoyed the characters of Gabe and Maggie. There were several sub-plots on the go, as well as the main undercurrent of the series where the family is wanting to find out whether the car crash that killed Gabe’s older brother, and heir apparent to the family business, and his wife, Maggie’s sister, was an accident or not.

Possible suspects and motives are put forward for discussion, but of course we will be waiting until the next book to find out more. 4.5 Stars 🖤

The flow of the story is quite nice and I always wanted to keep reading rather than stopping and adulting. The plot was fun, though I probably couldn't tell you what happens because nothing really stood out too strongly for it. The most interesting thing about it is that this is a light mafia story with some organized crime inspired elements, but keeps it on the fun, fluffy side.
I liked the characters! They were entertaining and had dimension, though a little formulaic at times. The characters had chemistry and were honestly pretty funny together.
I have read the next book in the series and I found that one a little more entertaining than this one, so I do recommend continuing on with this series.

True love wins, family wins, doing the right thing wins even in an old fashioned mafia family. Action, danger and steamy sex scenes.

There’s not too much amiss with this story other than half way through and I’m finding it just a little humdrum. There’s not that hook that keeps you on the edge of your seat, or wanting more. Not my story in the end. No doubt I’m in the minority.
