Mending His Past: Wounded Warriors Rescue (Second Chance Romance in Liberty Cove Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 893 ratings

A hurting veteran who feels too broken for love, a single mom trying to protect what’s most precious to her, and the dog who helps unlock both of their hearts.

Sergeant Trent Roland came to Liberty Cove to help rebuild the storm-damaged Wounded Warrior Rescue. He never expected his path to cross with the woman he once thought he’d spend the rest of his life with. Reminders of their past awaken the desire to rebuild the life he should have had, but the scars of war that he still bears tell him that he’s not the man he once was, and love is too far out of reach.

With a broken-down truck and bills to pay, unemployed single mom, Olivia Malone jumps at the chance to work at the rescue. The last person she imagined she’d see on the job was Trent Roland—the first man to ever break her heart. Old feelings surface as Olivia and Trent spend their days, working side by side. They make a great team when it comes to rebuilding the dog rescue, but neither of them are ready to risk trying to build a new family from the wreckage of their broken dreams.

Time spent in the company of Olivia and her young daughter cause Trent to realize that he’s fallen in love with more than one resident of Liberty Cove. He finds himself longing to step into the role of husband and father. But the unexpected arrival of Olivia’s ex-husband could mean that Trent has run out of time to take a second chance at love.

From the Author

I'd like to take a moment and tell you a bit about the "Second Chance Romance in Liberty Cove" sweet & clean romance series. Each book tells the second chance romance story of a new military veteran. The stories take place in the small seaside town of Liberty Cove, Texas. It's a wonderful little town that has seen better days and is in need of revitalization!

The town was recently hit pretty hard by Hurricane Parker. The storm not only damaged several businesses on the idyllic Main Street, it seriously damaged the local dog rescue center--the Wounded Warrior Rescue.

And this brings us to the heart of the series! The Wounded Warrior Rescue is the hub of this series. It's a fantastic organization that, as a matter of policy, only hires ex-military personnel to care for and rehabilitate the rescue dogs. Broken dogs, meet heartbroken military men as they are reunited with the loves of their lives.

Each of our lovable veterans will not only find their path to inner healing, they'll also find their happily ever after in one of the sweetest little towns you're ever going to visit in your imagination.

I am so pleased to introduce you to this heartwarming series!

Great book, with wonderful characters. Each character was built very well without overdoing or repeating anything. And yes there are pink M&Ms😉. On to book #2, with a good feeling I will fly right through them all.

Trent and Olivia were in love in collage and when he left to join the army to keep his dad from running his life it broke both their hearts. Ten years later after his discharge from the army he is back in town to help his aunt by making repairs to her dog rescue after a hurricane. His aunt, Kat the matchmaker, hires Olivia to work with him. They still have the same feelings but Trent has closed himself off from his feelings because of things that happened while he was overseas. Olivia's husband left her when she was pregnant and she is afraid to trust anyone with her heart. She has a beautiful two year old daughter and is having a hard time making ends meet.

Their story is sweet and a little bit sad. They have put up barriers and it's difficult to let them down. Other things happen to keep them apart but love rules in the end. The cast of characters is great. They add color to the story. And I absolutely fell in love with Molly!

This book was enjoyable, if not predictable in a very good way. Sometimes I like to read a book that I can just enjoy without a lot of angst and this was one. Trent and Olivia each had baggage, and at first they decided that getting their friendship back was a goal they could both agree on. However, it didn’t take long to realize that the feelings they once had were still alive and well.

Their relationship had to be tested a couple of times before they got their HEA, but it was well worth it.

This is my first read by Kristen Iten but I am eagerly looking forward to the next installment of this series. I don't like to give away the storyline so instead I recommend that you read this book. If entertaining characters, but of drama, interesting storylines, sweet romance and Christian values is something you enjoy reading then this is a book for you.

This was a sweet story of two people with a past together that reunite and find they can get past hits and obstacles if they do it together. Highly recommend this book.

Trent, Olivia, Kat, and Levi were wonderful characters, but Molly and Sport stole the show. This is a wonderful story of people coming back home to find that which they thought they had lost.

Easy to follow stand-alone. There is a segue to the next in the series. No editing errors, gratuitous violence or drag-you-down drama. Not all questions are answered.

Entertaining, predictable storyline of old flames rekindled. Likeable characters and dialogue. I wish the author had spent more time on the rescue dogs. The ending seemed rushed. What happened to the storefront idea?

No desire to re-read this story. I may be interested in other works by this author.

Sweet story, but didn’t grab my attention. I found myself easily putting it down and walking away from these characters. The author doesn’t know much about two to three year olds. Often the dialog or actions just didn’t fit. Leaving a toddler with a dog for 30 minutes and going to move furniture in the garage?!! NEVER! That set up a disaster, but it could have been far worse than described! And for the purposes of the book it could have happened in 5 min. Also, a mother no matter how forgiving of an ex-husband, should never allow that ex to show up unannounced after three years and spend the night. I just didn’t respect the lead character. How could she be soooo foolish and be worthy of everyone’s admiration and love? She had survived and provided for herself and her child for three years. She just answered the text and did what he asked without question?

The male and support characters were much more interesting and believable. Loved Aunt Kat’s nosy, romantic influence on those she cares about.

This was a lovely read, comical in places, thoughtful and emotional. When Trent walked away from Olivia 10 years ago he never thought their paths would ever cross again. As he had come back to help his aunt repair her rescue centre after a storm, he comes face to face with Olivia again, and her small daughter. They both face lots of mixed messages as they find themselves helping each other out. Have a read and see how it develops, you won’t regret it.

A really nice story about second chances and it certainly made you feel like you were there going through it all with them. Especially when Molly got so sick. Good to see the ending
