Beyond the Veil (Vampires of Velum Mortis Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.1 4.1 out of 5 stars 838 ratings

A new slayer desperate to prove herself. A cursed vampire king waiting to be awakened. A kiss that would change everything.

I’m Delia Adams, daughter of the greatest slayer to have ever come out of Mallory Falls. I’ve been beaten down, broken, and told I wasn’t good enough while training to follow in my father's footsteps, but here I am, ready to set out on my first mission. The problem? I’ve been tasked with killing the vampire king of Velum Mortis. Yeah, it kind of feels like I’m being set up to fail.

Now, standing in front of the slumbering king, desperate to prove myself, I prepare to shove my sword right through his heart and claim my first victory. I’m a slayer. He’s a vampire. It’s my duty to kill him.

So then why is the urge to abandon my mission and kiss him so damn strong?

Scroll up and click the button to see if Delia gives in to her urges or stays true to her slayer training today!

Beyond the Veil is an adult vampire romance novel that was loosely based on the fairy tale Sleeping Beauty. It contains mature content, adult language, and violence. Though this is the first book in the Vampires of Velum Mortis series, it can be read as a standalone.

Kudos to the author for tackling her muse in such a way that she brings out a whole new take on vampires--a new world full of action and excitement. From the moment you begin to read Beyond the Veil, you are introduced to a newbie slayer on the cusp of her first kill. This is what she's trained for, but as good stories go, the unexpected is what happens. Our darling Delia goes against her training, her beliefs, even her upbringing--enclosed in magic and the soon-to-be arms of the vampire king. She's a strong character--not wimpy or a robot. She fights. She gives. She takes. And she knows there is more to life than beyond what she was told to be. Liam is her other half. The true love of her heart. But, their love isn't easy to enjoy with so many odds battling against them, especially when she manages to anger all the slayers and rival vampires. Yet, she sticks to her guns, so to speak, and prevails against them all. Liam is equally invested and badass in his pursuit of happiness with Delia. His queen is his beacon of light after waiting a thousand years for her. This is only the beginning too. I can't wait to start on book two and revisit this magical world full of paranormal. The hellhound was a nice touch. I highly recommend it, especially if you're looking for a romantic adventure. The kind that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Enjoy.

Delia was raised by the vampire hunters and taught to hate them, kill them and even got engaged to another vampire hunter who is her mentor. She is sent on her first mission to kill the sleeping vampire king, Liam. But when she gets there things go wrong in every way they can. She can't find it inside her self to kill him and instead she thinks he's the most beautiful man she's ever seen and decides to kiss him which breaks a curse that was put upon him by a witch.

Delia finds out she's been lied to from the very start and if she's just been given all the information about herself, things might have gone differently. She finds out she's been betrayed over and over again by the people she thought she could trust. She has no where to turn but Liam and he's quite smitten with her and swears she's going to be his queen, his mate but she can't see that happening even though he's gorgeous and seems different from the vile, dangerous creatures that she's been trained to believe vampires are.

Both Delia and Liam have a big fight on their hands not only from the vampire hunters but also from the other vampires who might not want Liam to come back and take over again. This book had romance, secrets, betrayal, great action scenes, and two main characters who were destined to find each other

It was okay. I enjoyed the plot and world, just wish they'd been more fleshed out. Everything felt very surface and succinct. And convenient. And rushed and not fully explained. Everything was like "they'd/I'd/he'd/she'd hated them/me/him/her for years/lifetimes/centuries, but when they were told why they shouldn't, they just said 'okay' and everything was good or everyone was in love again. Back stories were explained after-the-fact. Abilities were used that were never explained. It just needs more.

I liked this book. It had an interesting take on vampires and hunters. I liked the surprising twists in the story. The world building was good. I could picture the world behind the veil and the world in general.
Loved the way destiny played a role in the decisions that the h played. Her kissing the Vampire King instead of killing him was just the beginning of the intrigue and adventure they had.
I was impressed with the justice the king had towards the h past love interest. The reality of the actions he took. No spoilers here but he got what he deserved and then some. Loved the common sense she instilled in the court when everyone else wanted death all of the time.
You will need to read the story to get the meaning behind that statement.
I would recommend this book. I finished it in one sitting, I couldn't put it down.

4 stars for Beyond the Veil by Stephanie Summers. This is book one in the Vampires of Velum Mortis series. This is my first book from this author but it won’t be my last. This is the story between Delia, a slayer and Liam, the vampire king. The book has this forbidden romance aspect to it. The book had everything I enjoy in a story. It had suspense, romance, betrayal, unpredictability, and so much more. The romance and chemistry between Delia and Liam can be felt while reading. I enjoyed every part of this story and I am looking forward to reading more from this author.

First let me state that I received an Advance Reader Copy, (ARC), but this in no way influences my review. I always leave an honest review. Also this author is new to me, and I hope it won't be my last.

OMG!!! This story is gr8. A slayer sent to kill the vampire king only to kiss him instead. A vampire king who's waited a thousand years for his mate. Good witches and bad ones. Wars and almost wars. So much happening throughout this story. I loved it and couldn't put it down. I recommend this read. 5 Thumbs up

The first few chapters were dragging a bit for me, as there were too many thought monologues of the female protagonist, resulting in me not really caring for her at all, as I found her to be too whiny and self-centered. And although events were explained while the story was developing, I had the niggling feeling in the back of my mind that I was missing something.
However, after the first few chapters, things picked up, the plot thickened, and that is when I started to really get into this story and yes, even changing my mind about the "heroine".
All in all, not a bad start to a new series, and even if there was no nail-biting suspense, it was interesting enough to make me want to continue and get the second book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable story, pass if you want deep emotional connection and slow burn

I kinda hoped for a darker story but otherwise a good read. Shed some well needed light onto mediocre/emotionally abusive relationships without requiring physical violence. Liam was very suave, although I do wish they'd spent more time together to actually learn about each other.

Buffy the vampire slayer meets sleeping beauty.

Did I like it… yes I didn't mind this at all. It was like blow your socks off amazing, but still an great short read.

The audio was narrated wonderfully, and it had a HEA.

It doesn’t have a few smut chapters but I would allow late teenagers to read this.

Recommend if you're after a short read that isn’t overly consuming.
