Wounded bodies mend; wounded hearts take longer.
Three warriors return from the Napoleonic wars with damaged bodies, ugly memories, and regrets to futures they are ill prepared to face. But love can heal the most damaged heart bringing with it hope for better days
Candles in the Dark—Douglas Marsh came home to an unexpected inheritance, a factory he has no idea how to run. With many dependent on him, he does his best in spite of pain from his battered legs. He has no time for self-pity especially after he meets a woman on the streets with far bigger problems.
Lord Ethan’s Courage—Lord Ethan Alcott left his right hand and his soul in Spain. He lives on the streets during the worst winter in decades, wishing for death, ashamed to go home. But a stubborn lady and her equally determined brother won’t give up on him.
The Tender Flood—Zach Newell manages well enough with a prosthetic leg. He even drives a carriage for his uncle, but he’s desperately lonely, missing the comradery of the army. In the midst of the storm of the century he meets the woman who makes his heart sing, one too far above his touch. If he won’t approach, she will have to.

Traveler, poet, librarian, technology manager—award-winning and Amazon best-selling author Caroline Warfield has been many things (even a nun), but above all, she is a romantic. Having retired to the urban wilds of eastern Pennsylvania, she reckons she is on at least her third act, writing family-centered historical romance set mainly in the Regency and Victorian eras.

Caroline believes firmly that love is worth the risk; she sits in an office surrounded by windows and nudges readers to explore the riskiest territory of all, the human heart.

In addition to her weekly blog, But First Coffee, she hosts guests on her Highlighting Historical Romance series, and contributes to The Teatime Tattler, a blog in the shape of a fictional nineteenth-century gossip rag.

This is a series of three long short stories or three novellas, whatever you want to call them, with the common theme of war vets who have come home and are permanently physically (and mentally) maimed and how they found love. I do love a disabled hero or heroine, so this book was right up my alley.

I enjoyed all of the stories, but my favorite was Lord Ethan's Courage.

Solid five star read!

~~~
Candles in the Dark
What wasn’t to love in this sweet novella? Douglas is a war vet and walks with a limp and a cane. He owns and employs as many war vets as he can in his candle making factory. He even employs a few women. His kindness and benevolence seem endless, so when he sees a pregnant woman waiting for a handout a bakery, he immediately jumps to action.
Esther is beside herself. Not only is she pregnant, she’s starving and lives in squalor. She was a part of the ton until she found herself pregnant with no husband and her family disowned her. She was in dire straits. She was going to have this baby and had no way to support it.
Douglas understood this and wanted to help her in any way he could. Disowned or not, she was a part of the ton and he was a working man. Even being friends is frowned upon. But she needed somebody to help her and he just couldn’t turn his back on her.
Such a great story!
Lord Ethan’s Courage
Ethan is a war vet and is living in the streets. It’s cold, he’s starving, and is haunted by the memories of what transpired when he lost his hand. He doesn’t feel that he’s worthy of being around polite company, even if he is a lord. He hasn’t told his family that he’s home and they think he’s dead. Quite sad when you get down to it.
Flora is in the back alleys at night, looking for veterans to help when she haps upon a group of men that were gathered behind a pub. She didn’t know any of them, but when one of them chastised her for being there without a proper escort, she knew there was more to him than what he let on. He was educated, at the very least.
Ethan had to come out of his comfort zone if he wanted to make sure nothing happened to Flora and that opened the gate to this short but incredible love story. It had some angst, but no steam, which was fine with me. Sweet romances are great, too, and this one scored on every level.
The Tender Flood
I loved this one, too. It was a stunning conclusion to this short, sweet series.
Zach Newell lost his foot in the war and has a prosthetic and uses a crutch for help in walking, but it didn’t inhibit him in the least. He and several other people are caught in a storm that washed out the road and left them all in the Queens Barque.
A few of those “other people” were Patience Abney and a small group of young boys. She runs an academy of sorts that teaches these boys how to read, write, do arithmetic, and become gentlemen. They’re headed for safety, too. She was prepared for the boys and herself to help out around the inn to earn their keep. She wasn’t counting on meeting the dashing Zachary Newell.
These two went together like bread and butter. Their attraction was instantaneous and delightful, even though she has ties to the ton and Zach is the son of a shopkeeper. It was a classic love at first sight.
This was a feel-good story with a prim school mistress, a wounded war veteran who sings bawdy songs, has ambition, and drive, combined with six little boys who adore them both. What wasn’t to love?
Such sweet, heartwarming stories! I enjoyed each one. I have a soft spot for H’s who are/were military men, especially in time of war, and it was satisfying to watch each make his way to a HEA.
I loved how there's a blurb at the beginning of each story.
1. CANDLES IN THE DARK - 4.5 STARS
Wanted more for the ending - more what their future held. I became so invested in their stories I didn't want to leave their endings to my imagination-lol.
The H is a working class man back from the war injured. He can't serve his country anymore and is lucky to be in charge of his uncles candle shop. What I enjoyed was the aspect of this trade and trying to sell to the bigger businesses their candles.
The h is an women about to give birth and all alone. The meeting of these two was also unique and their first meeting left a lot to be desired.
Clean story with some kisses. Great chemistry and secondary characters. Romance not until the very end - then at lightning speed. No cheating, no cliffhanger, HEA and clean.
2. LORD'S ETHAN'S COURAGE - 5+ STARS
I wish I could convey how this story affected me. Being a Navy Veteran, who served stateside during the Vietnam War, I know how the war affected those returning home. I had so many friends who had to deal with the trauma they saw but also a what they dealt with upon returning. We have come a long way from the time period this takes place and the Wars since. We have many services available and people in place to help. But, always room for improvement.
Our H has guilt of what he did and saw and it touched my heart. Ms. Warfield, you did an amazing job because I could feel the anguish of our H. The h was perfect for him, kind and caring and didn't let his roughness scare her. Great main and secondary characters added to the story.
This isn't a sad and gloom story, but a feel good story about the right people caring.
No cheating, no cliffhanger, HEA, romantic and clean with kisses.
3. THE TENDER FLOOD - 5 STARS
How I loved the children! Such a tender sweet story. The H lost a leg in the war and drives a coach. The h runs a school for young boys and that is where our adventure begins.
Two people finding they have so much in common. From love of children to love of the written word. Romance builds slowly, sweet moments, no cheating, no cliffhanger, HEA, clean with kisses. Enjoyable epilogue!
Fantastic Bundle! (ljb)
Men of all ranks, suffering the results of a long and devastating campaign against Napoleon, luckily find in the aftermath brave resourceful women willing to help them rebuild their lives and make a Future that justified their sacrifices. Enjoyed it and curious to check out the author’s other books.
It takes a good writer to pin me to a book and I devoured these three novellas. Sweet, tender regency romances with honourable heroes and brave heroines willing to risk societal approbation in pursuit of the right cause. OK i am a sucker for a wounded hero but I loved the fact two of the three heroes were not drawn from the ton…they were working men, other ranks trying to make their way in the world.
Three very different stories, with very different characters, but rooted firmly in reality.
Romance for those who worked for a living are given full rein in two stories, and highlight the dreadful treatment of women in dire or socially difficult circumstances. One does involve an aristocrat but deals with the homelessness and mental struggles of soldiers returning from war. Not a modern problem by any means.
All three a fabulous tales.
A superb trilogy that I highly recommend.
A lovely .collection of stories of returning soldiers wounded in ways that made them unfit for further duties and the ladies that have them love and a reason to live and carry on. Good stories not sentimental and making the heroes strong I really enjoyed it.
