4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 512 ratings

When life kicks a wanderer in the bollocks, all he can do is fight for his life.

Bad boy BC Brooks screwed up his lifelong dream of being captain of the English national rugby team. Lost and confused, he hides from his failures until an unexpected inheritance forces him to make a change.

Graham Hodson lives for travel, adventure, and one-night stands. Wanderlust rules his life. He never expects a brief encounter with a stranger to haunt his dreams and follow him across the world.

One diagnosis shakes both men to their core.

One journey through the depths of recovery brings two perpetual bachelors into the unknown territory of love.

The Wanderer is book one in Dahlia Donovan's international bestselling gay romance series, The Sin Bin. Each one features hot rugby players and the men who steal their hearts.

"The Wanderer hits some hard truths of how cruel life can really be, but on the flip side of that, it shows that love is such a beautiful and patient thing that seriously will come out of nowhere, knock you flat on your arse and make you a better person than you ever thought you could be." —Lil Maso for PNR Book Lover Reviews

Holy hell! I have been picking some bloody heart-wrenching stories of late! This one I even lost my reading buddy, Ang on this one so I am honored to be guest reviewing over on the incredible blog, PNR Book Lover Reviews.

This is my first Dahlia book, and despite my red eyes and sever missing of the U.K, thanks Dahlia, I really did enjoy it and have been told I should really read 'After the Scrum' to get my Caddock-fix. Perhaps my next read.

Regardless of looking the same as his twin, Graham is the complete opposite. Where Rupert is happy to stay in Cornwell with his wife, Graham isn't great with relationships and being a wanderer is his perfect way out of ever really having one. His work takes him from exotic worldly places, it is a high he can not get out of his soul.

Losing his spot in the English national rugby team, Boyce aka BC has become a little stuck. When his uncle passes away and leaves him his inn to him, BC is forced to stand up and get serious about his life.

He doesn't do relationships, so finding his head spinning over a 'causal' hookup in the closet of his best mates wedding is leaving BC out of his depth. Especially after his "ginger spice" crush spends some time at the inn for work and makes it clear he isn't interested other than a quick romp around the sheets . . . . and other surfaces of the inn.

Then BAM! The nice cushy rug is pulled out from under you when Graham falls ill on one of his trips, which finds BC rushing to his side, thus the start of the most heartbreaking, courageous and loving journey either men will make.

I won't go into more detail as it will seriously spoil the book and trust me, you don't want that. This book will have you laughing so hard at the easy banter between these two then clutching your chest as the emotions threaten to boil over.

How the hell I managed to finish this book, especially back to back with another cancer patient story that shattered my heart, is a direct credit to how well Dahlia writes. The story was easy to get into and even during the punch to the gut moments, it was hard to put down.

Do I think this book is for everyone? Hell No! I mean did you miss the part where my bestie backed out of reading before even hitting half way?
The Wanderer hits some hard truths of how cruel life can really be, but on the flip side of that, it shows that love is such a beautiful and patient thing that seriously will come out of nowhere, knock you flat on your #arse and make you a better person than you ever thought you could be.

ps. Thank You, Dahlia, for my next tattoo <3

I’m not sure why After the Scum is not officially labelled as part of The Sin Bin series since it really sets the stage for The Wanderer being that Graham and BC meet at Caddock’s and Francis’s wedding. Our two MCs, Graham (the prickly travel writer) and BC (the larger than life former rugby player) are oh so good together. Their respective personalities play incredibly well in their back and forth banter. The set up is nice in that neither one was looking for a relationship but they clicked so well that it just snuck up on them. I absolutely loved BC. Who’d imagine that this giant of a man was really a gentle giant and all “soppy” inside. This story was a bit darker than I expected but watching BC’s unwavering support of Graham when life throws a nasty nasty curve ball.
The cast of characters was wonderful; not a nasty or unlikable one in the bunch. I felt like I was part of the group as Caddock, Francis, Ruppert and others from After the Scrum arrive to provide their support to Graham. And you’ve got to love Mrs. Morgan. What a powerhouse she was in her understated support.
Overall, this story was well edited with only a few very minor mistakes and the flow of the story pulls you gently along. I was a bit disappointed with the ending, though. It does end on an upswing but although the words were fluffy and loving, it still felt more like a tentative HFN than a more solid happy ending.

I loved how the two MCs, Graham and BC, met each other. I wasn't very far into the story when I had a feeling I was supposed to know who some of the secondary characters were. So I looked up the author and I found that, while not a series, these MCs make small appearances in the book After the Scrum. I downloaded that one and read it; it was very good, too!

The best part of this book is the way BC and Graham talk to each other. While being lovingly insulting doesn't work for every couple, it works for these two. They regularly call each other names like numpty, ba$tard, wan5er, and so on. But you can just hear that the names are said with such affection. Here is another example of how the guys interacted in a funny way: "He grabbed a pillow to swat BC in the face until he shot up in bed. "Oh good, you're up."'

The ending of this story is very realistic and perfect for these two characters. I cannot wait until July when the second book in the series comes out featuring Freddie, the care coordinator/nurse who tends Graham in this book.

First off, I had a hard time reading this book because of the massive amount of British slang which, as an American, was difficult to decipher at first. Then I began to realize most of the words were good-natured put-downs or insults. But because of all the insults, I never felt a romantic connection between the two main characters. They were almost like frenemies with benefits. Additionally, the story was quite slow to build. Until a major life-altering situation arises at about the midway point of the story, I was pretty much bored out of my mind. After this, the story became more interesting. But, as I said, I never felt a romantic connection. Friendship, at best.

The characters are well drawn. Dahlia writes with a lusty zest and great humour. If you are a British reader you will like this. An American reader will find the terms and slang sometimes a little confusing, but it's worth a read even so.

4.0 out of 5 stars Touching Story.

I found this an interesting story but at times a teensy bit slow and drawn out, but not enough to give up on it as I really liked these two men and their quirky relationship. Although I have to admit that at close to the half way point I was tempted to skim forward a wee bit, but then THAT happened, dang!!
That threw me for a loop and so I eagerly read on. A good story, painful at times but worth it.

4.0 out of 5 stars The possibility of death makes them reevaluate what’s important, each other.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 24, 2023
It does try a bit hard with the Britishness, 9 uses of “nosh” seems a bit ott, but it’s a fun romp that covers a grim disease, schoolboy humour to hide true emotions, plenty of funny moments, some steam. A 54 year old band also gets mentioned often!

The Wanderer is my first book by Dahlia Donovan but will not be the last.
A beautiful story that made me laugh and cry just as much. There was much humour and sarcasm between the main characters as well as all the other characters in the book. The attention to detail was more than I expected but it made the book all the better for it.
I’m really looking forward to Sin Bin book 2

3.0 out of 5 stars Odd English Slang Language Felt Over The Top, But Liked the Romance
Reviewed in Canada on May 5, 2020
The English slang or 'rugby lads' kind of language feels like the author was trying too hard to sound English. My husband is English, and we watch a lot of rugby, and most rugby players who are interviewed are well educated and do not speak like this. However, I did like the romance and the details around Cornwall. I will give the second book a try.
