At This Moment (Of Love and Madness Book 1) Kindle Edition
Sometimes life gives you what you need, even if you don’t believe you deserve it.
Kate Daniels wants it all—a big, crazy life, lots of kids, and an adoring husband. Someday. For now, she’ll be happy just to survive her first semester of college. Billy McDonald wants it all, too. Since the day he got his first guitar, he’s had one goal—to prove he’s worth something. His dream is so close, he can almost touch it.
Thrown together during a freak snowstorm, Kate and Billy’s lives become permanently entwined. On the outside, they have nothing in common, but scars aren’t always visible and abuse doesn’t always leave a mark. Kate keeps the pain of her past buried, while Billy carries his like a weapon.
In spite of finding love, Billy continues to be haunted by his childhood and tempted by the excesses of the music industry. He struggles to keep his career on track and his inner demons at bay, until one night, he makes a mistake that could cost him everything. Kate may have found her happily ever after, but for Billy, the nightmare has just begun.
Set against a backdrop of heavy metal and emerging grunge, At This Moment is the first book in the Of Love and Madness Series. A love story that unfolds over twenty-five years, it’s the tale of two damaged people trying to make their way in the world without destroying themselves or each other in the process.

For quite some time the Of Love And Madness series has been registering on my radar, but this was the first opportunity I had to sit down and read it. This went beyond a binge read and entered into meaningful and captivating territory after the first page of book one, At This Moment. In this series Ms. Cimms gives her audience an all-encompassing love story where every hug was enveloping and every kiss was soul sealing.
The leads in this work had a presence that reached far beyond the pages they occupied and the singular draw they felt toward each other easily translated to this writer's readers. Billy and Kate were full of imperfections, there were times that they both made choices that gave readers' reasons to question their appeal yet despite their lows there were just as many highs and what emerged were two incredible characters that offered so much in their frailty that it ultimately became their biggest strength. Details gave readers' a chance to form complicated opinions and showed the depth of this author's portrayals to their advantage. This couple's relationship was stripped down and the emotions were raw, real and lingering. Ms. Cimms showed Billy and Kate at their most vulnerable making no attempt to glamorize their bond and in doing so made them accessible to each other and reader's alike. The clarity this author had in expressing her characters miscommunications and misguided need to protect each other was done compassionately and expertly. A standout and memorable secondary cast not only enhanced but contributed significantly to this series.
The insight, intimacy and devotion Ms. Cimms had with her portrayals was rare and touching. She guided them through the best and worst of times and stayed true to her characters, never glossing over their flaws and never deserting them in their worst moments even as she elevated them in their best. This was an emotional read with no shortage of heartbreaking moments and full on sobs. If you are looking for a series to invest your time and heart into Karen Cimms' Of Love And Madness series is a must!
*Other than the first book in this series the works in this series are not stand alone.*
The author Karen Cimms brought the characters so alive for me I could picture what they really looked like or might be doing. I most definitely cried, laughed, got pi$$ed etc… with each and every one of them.
I have read every book in this series except the Christmas one and it’s next before I came back to give my review… I wanted to be able to comment on the series as a whole so here goes.
IF YOU NEVER READ ANOTHER SERIES OF BOOKS
READ THIS ONE
BY FAR THIS HAS BEEN MY FAVORITE, has kept me entertained, engaged, interested, happy, sad, heartbroken, exhausted, excited, ecstatic, totally gutted, pissed and so in love with this book family it is ridiculous.
Thank you Karen Cimms, I look forward to reading many more of your books.
At This Moment is such a wonderful story of two people, Billy and Kate. They are both a little broken by their past, bringing baggage with them into their new found relationship. There are bumps in the road and their love isn't always smooth sailing. Something I truly loved about Karen's writing, is that her characters have flaws, they don't always make the right decisions, but the struggles and highlights that Billy and Kate go through, are very realistic.
Billy and Kate aren't the only characters you'll fall in love with. Karen has written some very well rounded secondary characters, my favourite being Kate's gay best friend Joey. Its impossible not to fall in love with, or have a laugh, with Joey.
“Joseph, how do you expect to be my granddaughter’s godfather when you are a practicing homosexual?”
“I’m not practicing. I’m quite good at it. I don’t need to practice.”
I don't want to go into too much detail about what happens in the story, because I think its much better if you experience it for yourself. Billy and Kate's journey is far from over, and the short glimpse into the second book in the trilogy, has opened up a whole bag of questions and I can't wait to continue with the story. Book 2 is due out later this year.
I highly recommend reading At This Moment.....and SOON!
Top reviews from other countries
Both grew up in different parts of the country but in abusive and loveless homes. Katie's parents were mentally abusive while Billy's father nearly killed him in one of many beatings. Billy still harbors intense anger which he tries to lessen with drugs and alcohol,
And then comes news that will alter their lives forever...Katie is pregnant. To say her best friend, Joey, isn't thrilled is an understatement! He is horrified! Joey is gay and has had a hard time since coming out but through it all Katie and Joey have remained the best friends they have always been. Joey and Billy don't like each other but Billy tolerates him for Katie's sake. Joey, however, taunts him to extremes!
This story is just beginning...there are 3 in this love story, 4 if you get the Christmas one. I can't wait to start book 2. On the other hand I am afraid of what's going to happen next. What I know for sure is that these 3 main characters have my heart and I HIGHLY, HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!
I don’t want to give away the plot line…it’s up to you to read it for yourself and I don’t want to spoil it for anyone but I can tell you that the characters are so well written and developed you can’t help being fully invested in their lives from the get go. The two main protagonists are Kate and Billy and you leap into their lives without delay.
Kate may well be young and somewhat guileless but she has such an inner strength that she is both believable and likeable. Her family background is uncomfortable to uncover and it makes you love her all the more when you understand just how hurt she has been by her parent’s actions and indifference towards her and yet she still manages to maintain a beautiful sole and a respect for humanity.
Billy, oh Billy…you really shouldn’t want to like Billy, never mind love him but ultimately, love him I did. He has such a true depth of feeling for Kate despite making countless bad decisions and by the end of this first book in the Of Love and Madness trilogy, he finally falls into the vipers’ nest and I really wanted to wring his beautiful neck. Having learned a little of what drives his anger and self-deprecation, you just know there’s a hell of a lot more to come and more to discover of his painful past in the coming books.
And of course, there’s Joey, Kates wonderful friend from her childhood who has been her confidant from their early years at school. Joey is a fabulous, exuberant character and his quick wit and sometimes acerbic responses to Kate’s reactions to Billy and sometimes to Billy himself, lead to some very humorous reading. His character truly enhances this story, rounding it out and making it more than just a two-character love story.
The whole book is in my opinion, magnificently written, it’s really hard to believe that this is Karen Cimms debut novel, it is impeccable and equally as well edited making it a pleasure to read. What's more, it's great value for money and a substantial read, at 398 pages, of delicious angst, love and ultimately…betrayal.
This is one author who is going directly into the top ten of my favourite author list. I am so pleased that I put off reading this first book in the trilogy as I can now move straight on to read We All Fall Down (Of Love and Madness Book 2) safe in the knowledge that the final book All I Ever Wanted (Of Love and Madness Book 3) is now ready to read.
Don’t miss out on this fantastic story, if you love a hard rocker with a crack in his heart you will devour this beautiful book in one sitting.
