He’s a prince with a problem, she’s a commoner with a getaway plan. Modern-day Prince Adrian of Monaforte has a most old-fashioned problem: his demanding mother wants him wed to her best friend’s daughter, the hard-partying Serena. When his refusal falls on deaf ears, Adrian decides it’s time for him to slip away from his gilded cage and figure out his life, all on his own. As luck would have it, event photographer Emma Davison, weary of a revolving door of lost-cause men and tired of her outsider-looking-in career, is in need of her own escape clause, just in time to help a wayward prince in need. And she soon discovers that sometimes a girl’s gotta sweep a prince off his feet. For any girl that’s ever held out hope that some day her prince would come…or better yet, hoped that some day she’d come to him. What people are saying about Jenny Gardiner's books: "As Sweet as a song and sharp as a beak, Bite Me really soars as a memoir about family--children and husbands, feathers and fur--and our capacity to keep loving though life may occasionally bite." --Wade Rouse, bestselling author of At Least in the City Someone Would Hear Me Scream "A fun, sassy read! A cross between Erma Bombeck and Candace Bushnell, reading Jenny Gardiner is like sinking your teeth into a chocolate cupcake…you just want more." --Meg Cabot, NY Times bestselling author of Princess Diaries, Queen of Babble and more, on Sleeping with Ward Cleaver "With a strong yet delightfully vulnerable voice, food critic Abbie Jennings embarks on a soulful journey where her love for banana cream pie and disdain for ill-fitting Spanx clash in hilarious and heartbreaking ways. As her body balloons and her personal life crumbles, Abbie must face the pain and secret fears she's held inside for far too long. I cheered for her the entire way." --Beth Hoffman, NY Times bestselling author of Saving CeeCee Honeycutt on Slim to None "Jenny Gardiner has done it again--this fun, fast-paced book is a great summer read." --Sarah Pekkanen, NY Times bestselling author of The Opposite of Me, on Slim to None

Review

"SOMETHING IN THE HEIR by Jenny Gardiner is a wonderful tale of love and self discovery, as two people who should have nothing in common, somehow are perfect for each other. The story flows at an enjoyable and natural pace, with plenty of funny moments, alongside the romantic scenes. I love the secondary storyline of Caro and Darcy, and I look forward to the next instalment, to see their relationship develop. SOMETHING IN THE THE HEIR by Jenny Gardiner is a fabulous short, modern day fairy tale, with interesting characters, and I highly recommend it."

From the Author

hi! Thanks for taking a look at Something in the Heir (and hopefully the rest of my It's Reigning Men series).  I hope you'll get a chance to read it and I hope you'll enjoy escaping into the world of Monaforte for a while.
I don't know about you, but they had me at "royal wedding" back when Diana and Charles had their fairytale marriage. (Let's ignore the fact that it was not at all a fairytale and practically ended in revenge fantasy...)I actually got to meet
Prince Charles years ago when I was a photographer in Washington, DC. (back when we all still believed he and Diana had their Happily Ever After). No, he didn't not kidnap me and persuade me to help him not be forced into a marriage against his will (funny how he actually had been, though!). But he was rather charming, and far better-looking in person than he came across in pictures. It was fun dabbling in the rarified world of royalty and getting the briefest of glimpses into it, even if only for that brief time. Nevertheless,  I have long loved a good royal escape romance, so thought it would be fun to create a modern-day royal series in the vein of the Princess Diaries, only for grown-ups. It's been great fun creating an actual country and this royal family and friends etc. It's been something different for me from a writing perspective to world-build as I have with this, and I hope you have a fun time visiting the royals and their friends in Monaforte!Jenny

Hi there!

Thank you so much for checking out my books! I hope you will find some that keep you from doing the dishes, or vacuuming, or maybe even cause you to stay up later than you'd planned to (although I covet my sleep, so I'd feel guilty if I was to blame for that too often!).

A little bit about me: my novel SLEEPING WITH WARD CLEAVER won the Romantic Times/Dorchester Publishing's American Title III contest. And my novel SLIM TO NONE was a #1 Kindle bestseller (it even surpassed a John Grisham novel for a day!). My work as appeared in Ladies Home Journal, the Washington Post, Marie-Claire.com, Paste.com and on NPR's Day to Day. I honed my fiction writing skills while working as a publicist for a US Senator. Other jobs I've held have included: an orthodontic assistant (learning quite readily that I wasn't cut out for a career in polyester), a waitress (probably my highest-paying job), a TV reporter, a pre-obituary writer, and a photographer (once being Prince Charles' photographer in Washington!). Oh I'm also the volunteer coordinator for the Virginia Film Festival, which is a great one!

I live in Virginia with my husband; we have three grown children, and we all love to travel--between us all we've probably been to about 50 countries. I love all things Italian, regularly fantasize about traveling to exotic locales, and feel a little bit guilty for rarely attempting to clean the house.

This was a really cute book. Prince Adrian of Monaforte, is desperate for a temporary escape from his matchmaking mother, the queen. He wants some time to figure out who he wants to be. Emma is in a bit of a doldrums with her current job. While it is a great job, it has become a bit stale. When Adrian stops Emma on her way to her car after the party she has just finished photographing, she agrees to help Adrian hide out for a bit. I loved how open Emma was to helping out Adrian while trying to protect her heart at the same time. While she somewhat failed and allowed herself to fall for Adrian, she knew that their time together would be short-lived.

I liked how totally clueless Adrian was about American “common” culture and how he just soaked up all of the knowledge. His willingness to go with the flow and experience new things was awesome. There were lots of snickers and giggles along the way as Emma teaches him how to be normal. It is also great to see Adrian come into his own a bit and finally realize that “the way things have always been done” doesn’t necessary equate into “the way things need to be done”.

Loved the fairy tale ending and how Adrian and Emma help bring the Monaforte monarchy into the modern era. Can’t wait to read the stories of the other Monaforte siblings and friends. This was a very quick read that will have you laughing and cheering along the way.

Quirky, Thought out, Fun and out of the ordinary characters that get to interact. Yes! This book is a fun read. I didn't want to put it down. You probably won't want to either. Plan on taking some time for yourself and reading until you put the book down! The HEA comes but it takes some twists and turns to get you there... . and ohhh boy, do you need to cry and hope you have the tissues handy and then laugh along with the characters in others.... hang on to your surf boards, and grab your towels.... The Sun is shining even with winter in NJ right now...

This is an OK romance, with a few steamy scenes. It was mildly entertaining, and I liked the couple, but I didn't really think their romance was believable. I had trouble buying that Emma and Adrian were really in love -- seemed like mostly lust to me, and they didn't know each other well enough to really be in love.

I also thought that Adrian's mother would NOT have changed as much as she did, and certainly not so quickly. I thought her almost immediate acceptance of Emma was totally unbelievable.

I thought this book was OK, but not good enough that I will continue with the rest of the series. It gets 3 stars from me.

My rating system is below.
1 star -- Hated it, or did not finish. I usually only give this rating if some of the content is truly objectionable to me, like if one of the main characters does something really awful, and gets away with it.
2 stars -- Didn't like it. This rating usually means that I thought the writing wasn't very good, the editing was terrible, I didn't like the characters, or it had other major flaws.
3 stars -- I liked it, but had some minor issues with it. This rating means that there were minor editing issues, the story needed more character development, it was just too unrealistic, or had some other fairly minor issue. The majority of books I read get this rating – I do not consider it a bad rating.
4 stars -- I liked it a lot. This is a high rating for me, and I rarely give a higher one.
5 stars -- I loved it, and will probably read it again. Very few books are good enough to get this rating from me. The ones that do are usually classics.

I have always been a sucker for a royal romance whether it be in real life or fiction, so the premise of this book immediately appealed to me and I stayed up late several nights in a row reading Something in the Heir because it was so engaging.

The story opens with Prince Adrian of Monaforte, who's in DC on royal business, deciding he's had enough of not only his boring duties, but his matchmaking mother, and taking off with an assist from his loyal equerry and a woman he's just met, event photographer Emma. Keeping Adrian's identity a secret while he enjoys a much-needed break from royal life becomes priority number one, and a change in both scenery and Adrian's wardrobe are required to pull this off. Once the prince and his unwitting partner-in-crime are away from prying eyes, the two of them spend some quality time getting to know each other, sharing confidences as well as some interesting adventures, and . . . you'll have to read the book to find out how it all turns out. There are some fun twists and turns along the way, and the book ends in a very grand and romantic way, in the perfect fairy tale setting.

This book was my kind of light reading; it made me chuckle, sigh, and fan myself at various times, was very fast-paced, and incredibly entertaining. I'm so pleased that Something in the Heir is the first story in a series and I can look forward to reading about the romantic travails of Adrian's aforementioned equerry, Darcy, in the next book.

I was in the mood for something light and easy and I found it here. Emma meets Prince Adrian at a function where she is the photographer. Their first meeting frazzles her and her greeting to him was more than strange. He laughs and responds in kind (and I cracked up!). Later he tries to escape his handlers for a few days and talks her into helping him get away. She introduces him to 'common' American practices such as shopping at Walmart, eating fast food, miniature golf, and slice and bake cookies. They become friends and then the attraction grows. If you are a fan of movies like 'Pretty Woman' or 'Roman Holiday,' I think you will like this book. It's cute and funny and the dialogue is good. Realistic? Well, probably not. But I don't expect or want that in every book I read. I will be reading more in this series.

This was a somewhat fun read but not enough to call it enjoyable. Too many dialogues. The characters are not very lovable and they act very childish, specially the female ones. Too cheesy for my taste.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cheeky, fun romance
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 19, 2016
This is a lovely light read with loads of great banter between Emma and her best mate and a charming romance with a crowned prince from another country. My only criticism would be that Emma's jokes/ribbing of Adrian wore a bit thin after the first half dozen jokes. It would have been better giving them a few more challenges to overcome or a few other cheeky scenarios. All the characters were great, distinct and entertaining. I'd definitely read other books by the author.
