Shield-Maiden: Under the Howling Moon (The Road to Valhalla Book 1) Kindle Edition
Chosen by Odin.
Destined for Valhalla.
In my dreams, Odin whispers to me.
He tells me I’m destined to wield a legendary sword.
He tells me my road will bring me to Valhalla.
But when I wake, I’m only Hervor. Fatherless. Unloved. Unwanted. Jarl Bjartmar, my grandfather, calls me cursed. My mother, her memories stolen by the gods, has forgotten me. Everyone tells me I should have been left to the wolves, but no one will tell me why.
None but Eydis, a thrall with völva magic, believes I’m meant for a greater destiny. Yet who can believe a devotee of Loki?
When the king and his son arrive for the holy blót, the runes begin to fall in my favor. A way forward may lie in the handsome Viking set on winning my heart, but only if I unravel the mystery hanging over me first.
Readers will relish Shield Maiden: Under the Howling Moon. This sweeping Viking historical fantasy retells the Norse Hervarar Saga, depicting the life of the shieldmaiden Hervor.

This story is rich in mythology; details well developed characters, an amazing plot, adventure, tension, heat, passion, angst, drama, abuse, hurt, destruction, mystery and the Gods (and all that implies). I got lost in this story for a day and really, really didn’t want to come back to reality. I could not love this story more. The author took such time and research to make this story feel like I was reading a really passionate account of history.
You can’t just read this story, you have to experience it; it gives you no choice. While the story is darkish, it is more a historical darkness, a respect to what these peoples really experienced and how they lived their lives. The brief system with thin the story was amazing and (as far as I can tell) accurate. I loved hot the author managed to incorporate history into such a bold and telling tale that is a mind blowing adventure and the ride of your life. The characters are rich in emotions and strong in their thoughts; I connected to them and was yelling and rooting for them the entire time.
I seriously recommend this story and this series to anyone looking for high quality adventure, who loves strong characters, mystery, action, passion, desire, and Vikings. It really doesn’t get better than this. I received an ARC and am leaving an honest review. I also re-read in KU and bought a copy.

This book does an excellent job of world building and letting readers really get to know Hervor's strengths, anxieties, and inner world. For me the middle of the book did drag somewhat, but the last 30% of the book picked up and held me until the end. I especially enjoyed getting to know the characters in this book and I look forward to continuing the series with them (especially Eydis, who is a Völva!)
Something really special about this book is the way Melanie Karsak depicts magic and ancient Norse religion. She does a great job making the magic jump off the page and really immersing the reader. If you are fascinated by Norse religion, runes, rituals, and the ways gods interfere in the lives of mortals, you will definitely enjoy this book!

I absolutely loved these series, all the feels came running around the corner and I just love how the story continues on and on because I just didn"/ want it to end. (When it did I cried like a baby tho)
Hervor is the granddaughter of the jarl of Dalr, but for some reason, she is said to be cursed and her grandfather hates her so so much. She has no idea why, just as she doesn’t know who her father is. And even though there are shield-maidens in Dalr, her grandfather forbids Hervor to train and fight (which she nevertheless does in secret and thank heavens, because she plays a pivotal role in the protection of her home. Things get shaken up when Hervor‘s beloved cousin Leif comes to visit and with him the king and the prince… secrets and plots are finally revealed, the gods‘ and men’s…
The descriptions of people’s everyday life and the hardness in it make for a fascinating and fitting background and I was totally enmeshed in Hervor‘s struggle to unearth the secrets behind her birth and the machinations of her family’s enemies. Although one has to admit that it’s hard to include the spiteful jarl into that family. Whenever weak people get power, it’s hard on everyone else around them.
My only complaint is Hervor’s actions when she finally gets the chance to leave - she is so passive and it doesn’t fit with what I previously learned about her. She gets over it, but it did wreak my nerves that it does take her rather long. I loved the conclusion and can’t wait to read about Hervor’s next adventure.
