Three cursed shifters tied together by revenge. Can love heal them? Find out in the first book of this explosive, action-packed post-apocalyptic series. First rule of surviving the Wastelands: don't get caught outside after the sun sets... After her father was killed in a warg attack, Riley Kincaid was forced to stand on her own two feet in the brutal Wastelands she calls home. She knows how to survive, but when a lapse in judgment leaves her out after dark, Riley realizes she's in trouble. The sun has set, the monsters are out to play, and there's a band of reivers heading straight for her settlement. Riley needs to warn her people, but that's before she runs a handsome stranger down in her jeep. A stranger who might not be a man after all... Kidnapping her was the worst mistake he ever made. Dangerous outlaw, Lucius Wade, lives only for revenge. But when he kidnaps Riley in order to lure an old friend into a trap, suddenly the tables are turned. Riley has no intentions of being bait, and she tempts him in ways he hasn't felt for a long time. He's never played the hero, but suddenly a part of him wants to. When dangerous secrets are revealed, and Luc realizes an old enemy is on his trail, he's forced to change his plans. WoW, when I was deliberating on whether I should read this book one reviewer said “this book was like a live action movie”. That sold me, I jumped right in. I agree it was amazing! This was my first time reading a book by this author. I’m super impressed. This book was a dang rollercoaster ride. I loved the world building, I could visualize this barren landscape. I really enjoyed the heroine Riley. She was one of the toughest ones I’ve ever read. I’m adding this to my great heroines tag list. My favorite secondary character was Adam McClain. He was admirable. I can’t wait to start book two, his story. The only thing I didn’t like was it felt like their were no others people besides McClain, Eden, Jimmy, Lily and Colton. Where were the other people? I recommend this book highly. I will be spreading the word in my book clubs and groups.

Luc and Riley’s story was packed with surprises! Apocalyptic environment, people who aren’t what they seem, shifters, zombies, romance, danger, all those awesome twists and turns...fantastic reading!

I love Bec McMaster and this book is different from her Steampunk series but is written just as well if not better. The main hero in this book is a mystery - I was not sure if I was going to like him but by the end I just love him. He is tough, sarcastic but also hurting and in need of love. I love the story between him and Riley and how their relationship grows and how she grows to love him. Fantastic book and I cannot wait for the next one in this series. I also recommend Shadowbound which is the latest in her Steampunk series. Both are great bookS and you will not be disappointed. ENJOY!!!

An ok book. The world was a bit muddled. It was post-apocalyptic with zombies and werewolves and Max-Mad style raiders. One of the three probably would have been enough, as none of them really got enough attention this way. Riley was a great character that I enjoyed reading about. The problem was Lucius and Adam. They were stuck in this headspace of the other being a threat and needing to be eliminated and refused to actually engage their brains at any point in the story. I can forgive Luc a little bit more with that given their history, but Adam drove me nuts. At halfway through I realized we were keep going through this frustrating circle of "I won't trust anyone, maybe I can trust them, oh, this this out of their control happened and now I won't trust anyone and am going back to the original plan again" until the raiders finally showed up and forced our Luc and Adam to work together. I just didn't have the patience to wait for that though.

The warg explanation of shapeshifting is original and cool. I loved the world-building, which combined 2 of my favorites: shifters and dystopia. Riley is kidnapped by Luc and knows immediately what he is. I loved the evolution of their relationship, and that the last woman he slept with was his wife, before he was turned. (I hate the manwh*re trope so major kudos for defying it!) He left his wife and daughter without giving his wife a chance to accept him, which speaks to his lack of self-worth. Normally that's a heroine issue, and I liked that it was flipped. It lost a star because of a trope that I HATE: SPOILER... secret child. Despite that, I’m hooked and can’t wait for the next one!

The characters & plot in this book, are way more interesting than Mel Gibson & the crazy, gun hooting fools in the desert. If u liked her Steampunk series, then you won't be disappointed w/ this series. She always balances all the right elements in a her sci-fiction romance novels- action, mystery & very, sensual sex scenes. I like that her books don't overuse profanity. I get real annoyed w/ the F- word, gets redundant for some books, or when the romance authors describe french kissing, "his tongue darting over hers," this sentence is way overused & not necessary. I think most women got it, when 2 ppl collide w/ heavy, heated kisses in a whirlwind passionate state, lips & tongue naturally come together. Then the other, is description of a man's pecker. When authors use the word "sprung out, sprung forth," i always laugh b/c i always think of a kid's wind-up clown box. I just feel it's not the right adjective for the pecker. Frankly, i don't think authors need to describe the action, esp when the readers know what happens men get aroused & pant's are off. Anyways, that's just me, mayb som other readers like it, but i always say, less is more. My imagination is enough to get the scene., i don't need to read tons of lewd adjectives.

I don’t normally like dystopian novels but the characters were so relatable that it all seemed more realistic than dystopian. I loved this book and really recommend it for anyone wanting to go an a can’t-put-down - kinda -adventure.

The post apocalyptic genre has many books that are good, but not a great many that are beyond words. This story is one such - it grabbed my heart and won't let go. I laughed, my heart jumped to my throat, and I cried.

I can't help it. I fall for almost every one of Ms. McMaster's heroes. But this one... Mmm! Dark, tortured, and desperately in need of a hug (and some love!). What's not to love?

With each book her writing and stories explode of the page and into your heart. If I could give it 6 stars, I would. A truly great read! :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Action packed and romantic

Bought this on a whim after struggling with a previous book by the author and I'm so glad I did because I loved it! This was such a brilliant post apocalyptic romance novel, packed full of action and heart. The characters were brilliantly realised, both the heroine and hero being strong minded individuals who were also deeply flawed. The chemistry between the two of them was blistering! I loved their whole dynamic, how they worked together as a team to defeat the baddies and Luc never shied away from asking Riley for help as most alpha hero's often do, he wanted to protect her, yes, but he also accepted her strength and wanted her to stand beside him. The world building was beautifully done, you really got the sense that they live in a desolate and dangerous place. With that and some wonderful side characters I'm so glad there's two more in the series to read! Highly, highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spannendes, sexy Abenteuer
Reviewed in Germany on April 6, 2017

I’m not a great fan of dystopian novels, but this one is special. Riley lives in Haven, one of the last human settlements in a post-apocalyptic world. During a hunting trip, she’s taken by Lucius Wade, a wrag—a human infected with a virus that gives him the ability to heal fast but turns him into a ferocious beast.
I loved the plot. It’s full of surprises with great action and romantic scenes, and the usual gorgeous writing.
