Fire in Frost by Alicia Rades is a YA Paranormal book and is book 1 in her Crystal Frost series. In this book we are introduced to Crystal Frost who for most of her life has believed that she is just a normal girl only to discover that she has some amazing abilities and that her mother has been keeping secrets from her most of her life. Crystal sees the spirit of a dead classmate and her life begins to rapidly change as the dead classmate desperately wants Crystal to help a friend who is in danger. Crystal’s mom advises her to keep her abilities a secret but when Crystal reveals her gift to a friend someone else finds out also and threatens to reveal her if she doesn’t help them as well. But it’s not just the ghost and this other person who want and need Crystal’s help…her gift shows her that there is a young girl who needs her, too. Will Crystal be able to help all of those who are wanting and needing her help? Or will she fall short?
For this being the first book in the series Fire in Frost is a really great way to start. You are immediately introduced to Crystal who thinks that she’s just a normal girl only to discover that she has pretty strong psychic abilities in two different forms that make her unique from those around her. She is a bit bothered at first when she sees the dead classmate’s ghost but then the pieces begin to fall into place a piece at a time. But Crystal has to balance it all…her personal life, her school life and working on strengthening her psychic abilities so that she can help those who need her help.
This is a really good book and it totally engages you from the first page as you go along. It is really well written and comes together really well. I love the little town setting of where everyone knows everyone and tries to be there for each other. It’s so realistic and just draws you in. For me this book was a real page turner and I couldn’t put it down and when I absolutely had to I wanted to know what was happening with Crystal and her friends. I honestly cannot wait to start the next book in this series. If you’re looking for something refreshing, not too dark but just about right then this is a good book to pick up but be prepared to just sit and read because it will have you turning the pages before you realize it. I give this book two thumbs up.

Crystal's second year of high school turns strange when she starts seeing the ghost of Olivia (a schoolmate who died a year ago), finds out she's psychic, and is asked to help rescue one of Olivia's friends from an abusive boyfriend.

(Though reviews are inherently subjective, I prefer to provide some organization to my opinions through the use of a personal rubric. The following notes may contain spoilers.)

Plot and Setting: 3.7 -- Plot is mostly engaging. Has unique elements and no major holes, but a few shaky bits and/or a slight lack of focus. Plot points in sub-plots are dropped or not resolved. Setting and timeline are consistent, if slightly unclear. There are a good number of interesting complications in this story, both in relationships and related to the psychic abilities Crystal is learning she has. Things wrap up and resolve fairly neatly, though there are elements that are clearly leading into a sequel.

Characters: 4 -- Main characters are mostly relatable, realistic, interesting, and/or dynamic. Most minor characters (even villains) have depth. Definite strong points in the relationships between characters. I didn't connect with Crystal particularly, which is a little rough since she is the main character and narrator. I think she mostly just felt very young, though there were things I liked about her. She gains a lot of confidence as she uses her psychic abilities, but it almost felt too fast to be true growth. I did like that we saw different sides to almost all the characters, even Nate.

Mechanics and Writing: 3.9 -- A handful of typos, punctuation issues, or word errors. (<8/100 pgs) None of the errors seriously hinder understanding. Generally solid use of POV. Decent writing. Errors include: compound word and/or homophone confusion, mild punctuation or formatting issues, a few awkward sentences. POV is all first-person Crystal.

Redeeming Value: 4.1 -- Partially focused uplifting themes or lessons. Drugs, alcohol, violence, etc, are not glorified at all. No explicit sex scenes. Implied moral guidelines for behavior. Themes include not keeping secrets from those closest to you, and doing all you can to help other people. We also get some more mature wisdom from Crystal's mom, who scolds her for doing something slightly illegal to accomplish her task. A very clean story, with the only violence and hints of teenage sex coming from the very twisted relationship between Nate and Kelli.

Personal Enjoyment: 3 -- I liked it. It was enjoyable and entertaining. I wouldn’t mind re-reading it someday, but it’s not a priority.

Fire and Frost by Alicia Rades was an amazing read that left you on the edge of your seat. I found it very hard to put this book down, and actually read it in two days because I couldn’t put it down. And I think because the characters are so well crafted that that makes it so much easier for the reader to fall in love with the read quicker.
Crystal is your average teenager, or so she thinks and then her life takes a turn she didn’t expect when she starts seeing the ghost of a girl that passed away a year ago. Eventually she learns that she has abilities she didn’t know she had and that her mom does too. And she goes on this journey to learn more about who she is and strengthen her abilities with the help of her best friend and mom. But she also has to help the ghost of her classmate, and her classmate that is blackmailing her because she knows her secret.
We follow Crystal as she pieces the puzzle together and figures it all out. And in the end she helps everyone that needed her help. And she learns something about herself along the way, which is always really cool when that happens to characters in a novel.
I became quite fond of Crystal and enjoyed seeing her grow as a character and into her abilities. I knew she had it in her from the start, and am glad to see the story end as successfully as it did with her resolving the issue. However, it left me on a cliffhanger and now I’m dying to read the next one because I really want to know what happens to the little girl.

This book is written so well, I was unable to put it down.
The main character, Crystal, is every teenager you have ever met. She lives a typical teenage life, until she sees a ghost! That is when we all find out she is psychic.
Read the book, as I don't want to put any spoilers here. Just know I am looking at starting book 2 asap.

I absolutely loved loved loved this book!! I listened to this book through audible and i adored every moment of this i just couldn't stop listening to it, i really liked the voice actor that was chosen for this book, the way she talks is very relatable.

I adored the storyline to this book, it was a very unique book and i loved how you are learning everything at the same time that Crystal isas she begins to come into her power, so it feels like you are going on a journey with her throughout the book. One of the thing that comes across this book and it's a topic that is important to me as i don't think anybody should be a afraid of the person that is supposed to love them. I love how strong Crystal is and how adaptable she is, she learns so much throughout this book and she just soaks it all in like a sponge. I can't wait to read more in this world and about her.

I seriously can't recommend this book highly enough, it is a read that sucks you in and just doesn't let go, it is written in a way that is so imaginative and it would appeal to so many people no matter who you are. I genuinely feel that everybody should read this amazing book by such a highly talented author!!!
