The only thing Emmagene and Huntly can agree upon is their dislike of the house party they both find themselves attending. Forced into Huntly’s company by their hostess, Emmagene finds herself attracted to the earl despite the deficits to his character. Their affair is as unexpected as it is passionate.
But will it survive their eventual return to London?

Kathleen Ayers has been a hopeful romantic since the tender age of fourteen when she first purchased a copy of Sweet Savage Love at a garage sale while her mother was looking at antique animal planters. Since then she’s read hundreds of historical romances and fallen in love dozens of times. In particular, she adores handsome, slightly damaged men with a wicked sense of humor. On paper, of course.

Are they too set on their path to let someone in …
It is not a grumpy meets sunshine tale, it was much more of a killjoy meets shrew story.
Emmagene and Huntly are rude, ill mannered, bitter person, and while Emmie hides it better under a veneer of society’s polish like most women, Hunt is like a bull in a china shop, they both dislike ton’s games and polite discourse, bored senseless among their peers.
Of course they were not born this way but life and experience altered their persona. The present Emmie, self proclaimed spinster, is the bitter jaded result of a heartbreak while Henry was taught from his tender age he was a disappointment in his parents’ restricted lenses, a kind of cuckoo in the nest.
So they mingle with their peers but are keep on the fringes of the parties, two beings everyone would like to avoid.
Why by some fate trick, they find themselves in each other company and what began as a game of quips and barbs turned into something deeper, stronger as both see beyond the other’s facade.
I was looking for a light amusing read this evening and I did choose well. You won’t be disappointed with Mrs Ayers’ witty writing, her heroes are unconventional, not sweet pretty all shining characters, they do not suddenly morph from Scrooge to Goldilocks, they stay their cranky moody self but they make efforts to please one another.
Hunt is a dirty talker who has found his equal in Emmie.
« Huntly reminded her of a shaggy, poorly behaved dog that tracked dirt all over the furniture and slobbered before dropping a duck at his master’s feet. »
« She was dressed like a wren about to molt for the winter. Had her hair pulled back so tightly from her temples it stretched her eyes into slits. Possessed features that were permanently twisted as if she’d bitten into an unripe plum. »
5 stars for this entertaining humor loaded read.

Although CHASING THE EARL is the second in a series, it can easily be read as a standalone just fine. I have to admit that I wasn't really looking forward to this one either as I honestly had a severe dislike of both the hero and heroine when I met them in the first book, FORGETTING THE EARL. I'm pleased to say however that I completely adored this story as well as its two main characters, both of whom touched my heart with their thoroughly abrasive but oh so vulnerable and flawed selves...
I love big and brawny men though so Henry was just my type of leading man. To say he was blunt and rude would be a huge understatement too. He completely cracked me up though and as the tale progressed I (like Emmagene) found myself falling more and more in love with him. I also liked that these two realized their mistakes and grew as individuals too, which is really saying something since this is not a long story.
Even the language and sex scenes which were explicit and detailed to say the least, were well done in my opinion since a connection was already established before any bedding actually occurred. Their chemistry was truly combustible and a unique blend of both sweet and spicy as well, which I loved. Even the insults they tossed at each other brought a smile to my face more often than not.
In the end I enjoyed this story so much more than I expected to and read it in a matter of hours since I had a hard time putting it down. It was an equally hot, charming, and heartwarming romance about two wounded souls finding their other halves. My only complaint has to do with the actual ending which was rushed and didn't feel at all like an epilogue should. I still loved every moment I spent immersed in this funny and unforgettable story though and highly recommend it to those looking for a sexy and wonderfully romantic read =)
Length: The kindle edition ended at the 100% mark on page 145 and location 1864.
I like the hero and heroine. They were complicated, many times unlikable characters, but very compelling. I had enough of their backstory to understand why they were so abrasive, but not enough really to be satisfied with the depth of their character flaws. Well, maybe Hunt, but even his parents’ dislike of him seemed strange without further insight. As for Emmie, I needed to know more about the man who broke her heart. That story was more full of holes than Swiss cheese.
And then there was Lady Trent. There was not adequate reason for her to try and humiliate the H and h the way she did and also to compromise Emmie with the opening carriage ride. I guess South really did have horrible taste in friends. I don’t think Emmie was so much a spinster she couldn’t be (shouldn’t have been) ruined by that carriage ride. Even widows had to be discreet. And why did Honora allow it? I dislike being angry with past heroes and heroines when they make an appearance in later books.
Still, as usual, the writing is very good. And though there are no true villains in this book - more man against himself - it was a page Turner for me as I enjoyed the bickering of these twin main characters.

Henry Eldrick, Earl of Huntly is just as prickly and gruff ! He and Emmie are attracted and then slowly build their Happily ever after.
A few mishaps and our couple are on their way to their HEA- I absolutely adored Henry and Emmie's interactions.
Steam Level :Oral + open lovemaking scenes 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Henry is the hero. Big, tall, a brute of a man who is not particular about his attire nor the way his often blunt rebuke of all and sundry, alienates him from friends and foes alike. He doesn't care much for society either. He catapulted to being an Earl begrudgingly.
His older brother, Douglas, was the heir to the Earldom till he died a sudden and unfortunate death, thrown off his horse, which was a gift from his younger brother, Henry. Henry could never compare to Douglas - in all things. His parents blamed him for the death of Douglas, his awkwardness and...for just being Henry. He's got a chip on his shoulder the size of the biggest iceberg in Antarctica. His current bad behaviour, his attempt of being the worst Earl ever in the history of Earl's, is the sum of all his experiences.
Emmie, our spirited heroine, is a self-confessed spinster at the ripe old age of 28. She never thought she'd find love again. She's equally flabbergasted that it had to be the worst rake ever, the Earl of Huntly, Henry. Will opposites attract or repel?
A spinster and a rake of an Earl? What's the chance of that succeeding ever? How about in a month? Preposterous!! Read on to find out in this quick-witted, humorous, sensual offering from the skilful and incomparable writing of Ms. AYERS.
I totally recommend this book to all lovers of historical romance in the Kindle world and beyond.
This is my opinion. Yours may differ.
