Arak's Love: A World Beyond Book 2 Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 1,473 ratings

Half-Argoran shifter, Arak O’tir knew good people existed. He worked with some of them. But as a deadly Jutak warrior, his work often took him into the less savory elements of society. So much so, he shielded his heart from those he’d rescued. That was, until one particular mission leaves him longing for a specific female. Someone who made him tremble even if she wasn’t from his world.

Sylvia Forrester never expected her quest for a husband would lead her into danger. Nor could she have ever foreseen that her search would find her captured by aliens and added to a list of potential sex-slaves to be sold for a high profit. While her captors should have broken her, destroying any hope she’d had of a life happily-ever-after, Sylvia’s savior has her wondering if her earlier dreams could still come true.

But Arak and Sylvia soon discover love and passion has its own price.

This series is one of the best I've read to date! The combination of SyFi and romance is perfect ... The love scenes are very sexy, and filled with emotion, as well. Enough feelings that really touch me; rather than just trying to write "hot sex scenes." (Although they are that as well!)
I fell in love with each woman, and every man in this series. The men are incredibly sexy, loyal, and powerful. Most of them are warriors; but the two who aren't are still really imposing. And very sexy!
Did I mention how sexually appealing she writes all of her male heroes? *sigh* They ALL hold a special place in my heart; and any romantic will understand exactly what I'm saying! :)

Arak is part of an elite group of warriors. He's also part dangerous and very sensuous cat! As a shifter (from his mother's side) Arak is a valuable and powerful part of the warrior team he works with under Torkel. His senses are highly attuned to his surroundings; if he gets a feeling about something, the entire team listens to him! He's extremely protective of the Earthling Sylvie, one of the women he helped save from being sold into sex slave market. Fiercely protective. He knows that she's HIS, and he has no problem proving it to her, any other man who dares comes close to her! Sylvie is drawn to his sex appeal from the beginning as well, but she was just saved from a violent sex-slave operation! She's not even sure yet if she wants to stay on Enotia, or go home to Earth. It's the wrong time and perhaps the wrong place to begin a love affair that will take both of them to a place nether has been before; but that both are interested in exploring!
This is a wonderful romance story, filled with twists, violence, and yearning. I even found myself laughing at times!
Personally, I think Akan is the sexiest man in this series so far, but then I love the sensual nature of cats, so I could be prejudice! :)

Michelle Howard wrote a great follow-up to the first book "Torkel's Chosen" in her "A World Beyond" series. The books center around women from the future earth, who outnumber men by about 10 to 1 after a virus has killed most of the earth's men. The women in the stories are migrating off-world to choose an alien for a husband, since about 90% of the aliens are compatible with earth's women.

The heroine in this book is Sylvia Forrester, who prefers to be called Sylvie. The ship she is on is hijacked by Marenian slavers, who sell the women as sex slaves. She and her cell mate, Joni Miller, are eventually rescued by the Jutak warriors we met in the first book. (For those that haven't read the first book, the Jutak warriors are similar to extremely high powered policemen.)

Arak O'Tir is one of the Jutak warriors who rescued Sylvie; he's half Argoran, which are men/cat-like shifters. He's immediately drawn to Sylvie, as she is to him, and the rest of the book is about their growing trust and eventual love. Of course, there were some really tense events in between that made this an excellent book! Also, it was nice to read a book that didn't have the H/h immediately fall in lust, satisfy their lust and call it love. Of course, that they didn't immediately fall into bed may have been more from Arak's restraint, but it was nice to see them get to know each other somewhat before declaring everlasting love. [tic = tongue in cheek]

The main reason I gave this 4 stars was due to improper grammar and word usage. An example that stuck with me throughout the first book and again in this book (by which I guess no one has ever pointed this out to the author), is the usage of the word "passed" for "past". The proper usage between the two would be "Arak 'passed' the salt 'past' Sylvie to the person seated to her left." I don't remember enough about what the word usage is called, but one is an action verb (passed) while the other is, I think, a preposition (past). Ms. Howard, google "past and passed" together to see how the two words differ in usage and the proper word to use; then search your books to correct this, please. It would make reading much more enjoyable. There were a few other grammatical errors, but not enough to detract from the enjoyment of the book.

This is a great series so far and I've already started on the 3rd book, "Lindsey's Rescue" and anticipate that it will be just as good, if not better, than the other books in the series. Each book is a stand-alone story and doesn't require that you read the prior novel. Once I finish this series, I'm going to check out some of Ms. Howard's other series. There is violence, profanity and explicit sex, so if those things bother you, this probably isn't the book for you.

Audiobook Review!

Wow, what a great story and performance! Book two was an awesome addition to the "A World Beyond" series! I fell in love with the story, characters, and the dual narration.

While Arak's Love did not come across as intense as book one, Trokel's Chosen, it picks up closely to where the last story ends, and really develops the multiple plots and characters. The search for Lindsey continues with some surprising twists, and two additional earth females, Sylvia and Joni are rescued.

From the moment Arak helped rescue Sylvia, he and his animal instincts are all about protecting Sylvia, and their relationship slowly starts to blossom. We really get to know Arak and Sylvia, and their attractions for each other is a slow burn that builds into some serious intense romance. While we watch their relationship grow, the other characters are developed, and there are several heart warming moments along with a few heart aches.

Michelle did an outstanding job developing the story, the different characters, and providing a few mysterious cliffhangers for future stories. * I can't wait to see how the story unfolds in books three and four.

I loved the dual narration and sound effects! This is one of the few m/f dual narrations where it is not based solely on m/f POV's. Michael narrated the entire story, and performed all the male character voices, while Samia performed all the female voices regardless if it was a male or female POV. The performance was very entertaining, and made the story that more enjoyable.

I highly recommend this story for any Sci/Fi romance fan! I will definitely be on the lookout for the other books in the series to be released in audio. (If you disliked Torkel's actions in the last book, you'll want to listen to this story.)

This book was....OK. Not awful, not great. I found some of the action hard to follow because the descriptions were sparse (which I also felt about the alien world & culture) and the transitions from one thing to another were very abrupt and not always clear. I found Sylvie to be a fairly bland character and the motivations of a lot of the characters in general were a bit opaque. My biggest critism by far, would be excessive use of the word MOIST in sexual situations. No, just no.

5.0 out of 5 stars Up and coming author definately worth reading ....

Some will either love or hate this book it's down to personal preference. Personally I like books that take me away from the mundane and transport me to a place that is different from everyday. This books does this for me!! I love Michelle Howards grasp of characters and how they interact with each other. She transports me to that place she is writing about. Could she make it better probably I've found that her books and characters evolve as does her writing they only get better the further along in the series you get. I've also read her warlords series and wouldn't hesitate to recommend her books.

I love the fact that her characters cross over from her other books. She's definately an author that I will continue to read and look forward to the next book in this series and seeing just how she develops as and author.
