One of the reasons I bought this bag was the hip strap. This allows for a much more comfortable pack in the event you need to leave your vehicle and begin hiking somewhere. It's not overly padded but it will do a good job keeping the bag from bouncing around.
Did I mention the lifetime warranty? Yes, it has that as well. I very good bag for a good price!
Then, the bottom of the pack below the "plastic shaping sheet", is such that hard items placed in the lowest portion of the main compartment chafe and dig into my low back and butt - adding to the pain caused but the "stay" digging into my spine. So I took additional pieces of a cut up sleeping pad to line the bottom of the main compartment. OBTW, that sleeping pad I cut up was not free.
Now that those two problems were reduced, I quickly found that the two side pockets were not readily accessible due to the upper compression straps. The image in the ad shows the upper compression straps being located above the side compartments. On mine, the straps go directly over the upper part of the side compartments and cause deformation and crushing of the side compartment and zippers. In order to access the side compartments, I must undue the compression straps, reshape the zippers and side compartments so the zippers actually work, and then carefully operate the zippers so as not to damage them. Crazy, poor design, or maybe just mine was defective.
The waist strap is a ridiculously thin and overly flexible 1-3/8" wide strap! When used, it folds onto itself and digs into my gut. Most waist straps are much wider and made of materials that hold their shape better. The ends of the waist straps are sewn directly to the hip pads. I'm surprised they haven't torn away yet. The hip pads themselves seem to be made with closed cell foam padding. The hip pads flex and become useless under heavier loads.
Moving on to the buckles. All of the plastic buckles are easily fouled by sand and become difficult to operate, opening or closing. I have never seen anything like in decades of using the plastic buckles.
And finally, do not load it heavy! It is great for seasonal clothing and the basics, but add too much food and water, and it is a miserable pack to carry. When loaded too heavy, it sags, shifts, loses shape, becomes very uncomfortable, and I find myself continually readjusting the pack on my back.
Having said all that, I still use it for regular days hikes. Maybe twenty days trips in all so far. Due to its larger size, it holds plenty of light weight clothing for colder temperatures. I love the large number of sewn in compartments for organizing the small stuff. My favorite is the sun glass pouch with the soft liner. And I love its larger size!
Just keep your loads LIGHT!
APRIL 2017 UPDATE. I bought this pack for around $85, I see they are now $51. Interesting. Anyway, all of the deficiencies I pointed out in the original review still hold true, especially my dissatisfaction with the narrow waist strap and the fact it loses form with modestly heavy loads. It drives my crazy. BUT, I now have roughly 56 day hikes with this pack (3 to 8 hours each). And it has been through some use that extends into the abusive category. Deep down I'm trying to destroy it so I can justify getting a new pack, but it won't die! Hehe. And despite that, it is holding up very nicely indeed. Not one failure. So I raised my rating from a three to a four. FYI, at $51 it's a steal, despite the shortcomings. But honestly, I can't wait to get something else, unless the shortfalls are improved in which case I'ld absolutely get another - or more.

I gave it the benefit of the doubt and got a replacement sent out. The replacement arrived already broken in the exact same place.
Its Wish.com-quality stuff with a $150 price tag.
