"Tools are fine. The case does not hold tools in place while driving from customer to customer. Have to reset everything every time I open the case." Read more

So let’s break it down like this,
Danaher owns the following:
Matco Tools = very high end
Armstrong = industrial high end
Silver eagle = industrial
Kobalt/Craftsman/Napa/Allen/Gearwrench/K-D = home, hobby, otherwise light use.
Starting with silver eagle, you’ll begin to find more Taiwan/China made products, though they are still tough and respectable as far as usable tools go. Sometimes, you’ll find name brands at the bottom of this list can float into the industrial side of the world in quality, I see this often with Napa.
Quality and features in the bottom list seems to always be floating around, keeping the market busy and tool sales up from people who don’t use or need tools every day with an attempt to spark interest. And on occasion, some of the great quality at the top of the list will trickle down to some of the lower end brands because of some bulk materials or other various reasons.
So let me get to the actual product being review here. First off the ratchets in this kit. They’ve put out a pretty decent tool at a fair price here. The internals of these ratchets you’ll find to be quite similar to the craftsman low profile ratchet #44995, which is a fantastic ratchet by the way. This gearwrench brand simply has 84 teeth instead of the 60 the craftsman had. The gearwrench is also not a quick release design which makes this ratchet stronger than the #44995. And I feel they have not overdone the tooth count either. I’ve pulled a great deal of torque on this ratchet with confidence and the clicking sounds very positive. These ratchets are far superior to the run of the mill craftsman. If you ask me, I’d say these gearwrench 84 tooth ratchets are a hybrid of the craftsman low-profile and the craftsman premium 84 tooth ratchet. Both great tools. The thumb ratchet in this kit has the exact same head with a shorter handle.
The sockets are great, STAMPED with sizes on two sides of each socket which is great for finding the one you need, and wont wear off like this "laser etched" crap. The fit and finish of these are pretty good too. Just this morning I abused the 1/2” deep socket with a breaker bar + 3ft cheater with no issues, which is what sparked me to write the review. But, like any brand, including the high end, they will break if you push them hard enough, I have yet to see adamantium sockets on the market. You’ll find the Napa labeled sockets to be very similar to gearwrenches.
Give this kit a go. These tools should last a long time.
Mechanically, these tools feel very nice in your hand. The actions to install and remove sockets is crisp and the retaining ball bearing does its job well to secure the socket when it use, and is not difficult to disengage when you are ready to change sockets. Some, who have experience with lower cost tools, know how a wrench feels when the socket or extension connection to the ratchet is loose or sloppy. These are not like that and feel good in your hands. This is not only an issue with feel. If the connections are sloppy it is often difficult to guide the socket onto the bolt it is intended to be used on, especially if an extension is being used.
Most people read reviews looking for a clue as to problems they might find. There are several minor points I will make in this regard:
The ratchet switch on both of the included ratchets has a movement which feels too loose and of relatively low precision. Only time will tell if there will be problems with this component. It seems to function perfectly, and I like the throw of the ratchet mechanism. I am willing to accept this in view of the other positive features of the tools, and their overall good quality. But, this component could use attention to improve the quality feel.
The other point I would make is with regard to presentation of the product. When I first opened the plastic case, and first laid eyes on the tools, they appeared used. I expected to find a tray of shiny new sockets and components. But, these had a used appearance with finger prints and smudges covering them. The box was brand new and heat shrink wrapped. So, I can only assume they came packaged this way from the factory. The question, I suppose should be, "Who cares?" in this regard. But, seeing this definitely starts you off on the wrong foot. To the manufacturer, I would suggest cleaning the tools after production, a dishwasher would suffice, tongue in cheek, and simply having your packagers wear cotton gloves. To the buyer, I would suggest that if these are intended as a gift, I would open the box and wipe the tools off with a soft cloth before gift wrapping.
The other point is that many of the sockets had fine surface scratches or abrasions on them right out of the box. This was not severe, and was only obvious in bright light. But, they are clearly visible and do distract from the appearance of new and quality. I would hypothesize this was as a result of contact with other similar sockets between manufacturing and packaging, as in moving down a conveyor, dumped unprotected into a hopper, etc. I would suggest that the manufacturer take steps to better protect the product between production and packaging.
The above several points are not functional issues. But, I do think they strike at presentation, and are worthy of mention. It will be interesting to see if other reviewers have a similar experience in this regard. Overall, these are very nice tools. I would recommend them. You would have to spend considerably more to get significant improvement in quality.
