Finally a solution!
Ok so here's the story. I was diagnosed with severe sleep apnea (off the charts severe with an AHI of 96) almost a year and a half ago and was prescribed a CPAP machine. It took a few months to find a mask I was comfortable with but almost as soon as I did, I began to wake up with extreme pain in my mouth, primarily my upper teeth. Like it would feel as though someone had been pulling forward my whole top row of teeth with a big clamp all night. After an hour or two the pain would subside but by the end of the day I would be troubled by jaw pain and headaches. I was even worried my teeth might break in my sleep. From internet research I thought I had bruxism (another sleep disorder that for most people involves teeth grinding, but for some jaw thrusting). Over the next year I went on a mission to find something that would solve my problem. I tried using an OTC mouth guard; asking my dentist who suggested an appliance (~$1000) or botox injections (!); using my CPAP only on alternating nights so I could have time to recover; taking OTC muscle relaxants; taking baclofen (a prescribed muscle relaxant that's used by people with MS), using baby pacifiers....It was at this point I finally figured out that I didn't have a problem with bruxism at all. I had a problem with *gravity*. I would lie on my back with my head propped at an incline. This resulted in my lower jaw falling forward into my upper once I was relaxed in sleep. (This hadn't been an issue before the CPAP because at that time I slept with my mouth open, snoring.)So then I tried using a collar to prevent my chin from dropping so far (somewhat effective, but extremely uncomfortable) and then came a search for a pillow that would do the trick. First I tried my local mattress store (didn't buy but went and tested every pillow they had), and then bought another pillow online from a store I could return items to in person. Proof of concept, but still no good.I took a chance (unhappy that it's not available through Canadian distributor though grateful it's available via amazon.com international shipping) and bought the Nature's Guest pillow. After unboxing my impressions were as follows:* No off-gassing or bad smell or perfumey scent which is fantastic because I have sensitivities and this can be an issue for me whenever I buy anything, especially something I have to wear or sleep with.* The case feels nice to the touch.* Soft but firm. The stuffing is almost cotton-like in consistency and sponginess, but feels remarkably firm and supportive when pressure's applied.* It decompressed pretty quickly.* It comes in a nice bag which is good in case I have to bring it travelling somewhere* It is heavy. Heavier than any other pillow I've had. Not sure if this is a pro or con.It took a few nights of adjusting the amount of stuffing. I needed less than what it came stuffed with (my neck is pretty short I guess). At first it was both too wide from the edge to the head depression and too high for my shoulders. But opening up the zippers on the sides and making adjustments did the trick (true you have to be careful not to get stuffing caught in zipper). One downside is that I feel I can't use it except for actual sleeping. Not really made for lounging or reading or other bed activities (especially since I don't want to shift the position of the stuffing). But. For the first time in over a year I've been sleeping on a pillow that works for me. It doesn't interfere with my CPAP mask, it keeps my head and neck in a proper and comfortable position, and best of all NO MORE JAW/TOOTH pain! I'm weaning myself from the baclofen and my average AHI is even lower (1.2 average in the past week) than with the CPAP and old pillow (usually around 4). Thanks Nature's Guest!!!
