Tool use is very straight forward and intuitive. Within 10 minutes of playing with it you have most of its function down. I used it to read my check engine light. Read P0420 which is catalyst inefficiency. I let the car warm up and then selected live diagnostics. You can see all the PID's or you can create your own custom list. I love that feature. I selected the PID's relevent that I needed to see to confirm a diagnosis. short and long term fuel trim shows me that the engine is running rich (too much fuel in the mixture). Coolant temp is spot on. Voltage feedback from the O2 sensors showed me what I needed to see. I then recorded a short 5 min drive and then graphed the data. Downstream O2 sensor is all over the place. Verified that the O2 sensor is working properly. P0420 in my case is a bad catalytic converter.
The amount of time and $ this will save you will pay for this tool over and over and over. Subaru isn't listed as supported but I had no trouble with mine. Just had to manually put in the info. Most cars after 2000 the scanner will auto-fill this data for you even the vin #.
The scanners troubleshooting is a nice feature as well. Useful for Veterans and inexperienced wrench turners alike, It gives you a checklist so you know where to start and where you should start searching next if that isn't it.
As far as connectivity it comes with cables for CAN, Toyota, Ford, GM, Chrysler, as well as the obd2 cable.
Which brings me to my only complaint. With all the cables included you would think they would give you the one to connect to your PC for upgrades? Nope. 3$ USB to mini B adapter. That is its type. Its not micro like what is common today on everything. Why not include that?
Still this tool is worth it. Go to bestbuy and get the mini B cable for 10$ and your back to fixing things.
The 9690 also works in plain English and walks you though the steps you have to take. One of my vehicles had a miss. This unit was able to tell me which cylinder it was and how to fix it.
On the first day I went to upgrade it on my old XP computer. Had a problem with the driver but, called Actron support and the girl help me through it. Great support so far.
On 04/24/18 I did my second software update. This brought the SW ID to FED0.
I have an old snap-on 'Brick' (an old scanner) and an AutoXray EZscan 5000 which only reads and clears codes, live data and has helped and still helps diagnose problems. The snap on of course does much more. Now I have this Actron unit.
My cars include a 95 Buick Century, 03 Buick Lasebre and an 03 Toyota Rav 4.
The 03 Buick works the best. Sees everything and reports all. I don't have any problems with this car so I had to cause one. I disconnected the front right speed sensor and even without driving the car, it displayed the ABS light. Plugged in the Actron and it found it. Here is the best part. When I clear it, only the ABS code got cleared. All the IM readiness test were still OK. I love that. It also reported the Air Bag system but, no faults.
It worked in the 95 Buick (odb 1) but would not report the ABS or Air bag sytems. At least I have the Brick for that. (UPDATE) After I did the second software update, it seems I now have to use the cigarette lighter that makes come kind of connection. The unit does not see the car without doing this. Also it does not read the RPMs of this car. Still no ABS.
The 03 Toyota was fine but still, no ABS. (Update). After the second update, the unite will now see the airbag system and ABS.
I also tried it on a 96 Blazer and it worked on finding an Air bag code. Cleared them but, all IM Monitors got cleared. The review data is awesome. I go into it, I see View Freeze Data, enter into that and see the P0446 code and reported fix (code connect) worked. (UPDATE) I still to do any other scan since I did the SW upgrade.
The documentation states it covers through 2013 but was told it will read newer car as well, you just need to use Global. I will test that as soon as I can plug into one and report my findings here.
By the way, in seems to do a bidirectional test on the Evap system for the 03 Buick. At least that's what it looks like and I can hear something click in the rear area of the car when I activate it.
Will keep updating as time goes on.
I tried to find a problem on a 2000 mustang's ABS and got nothing. The light was on but no report about codes for the ABS system or the traction control. It did find an DTCs and shows Reported fixes. I was really hoping it would find the ABS. (UPDATE) Have not done this car after doing the second software update.
So far, I highly recommend this unit.
Top reviews from other countries
I purchased it on Amazon Australia and it should in my opinion also work on my 2008 Australian Toyota Hilux. The Actron CP9690 cannot identify my Toyota Hilux. The 2008 Hilux isn't in the database of the CP9690. It's unable to automatically identify the Hilux, and the Hilux is also not listed when a manual search of the vehicle is done. The Toyota Tacoma sold in the USA is similar to the Hilux sold in Australia. The CP9690 can only give basic OBD2 data, when the Toyota Tacoma is selected, and no ABS & Airbag data is provided. A cheap $10 bluetooth OBD2 scanner can do the same for a lot less. If you just need an OBD2 scanner, there are better options available. My Foxwell NT510 is able to find the Australian Hilux, and the NT510 gives Manufacturer data - that the CP9690 should be able to provide.
From the User Manual of the Actron CP9690, it's clear the product was manufactured by "Bosch Automotive Service Solutions Inc."
I lodged a technical complaint with Bosch / Actron. I was advised that: "Our tools are designed for the U.S. market and would only include coverages for vehicles that are available in the U.S."; and
" Again this is not specific to the CP9690 but across a number of DIY scan tools Australian cars have limitation imposed the OE on access to the diagnostics, when you get into the more professional scan tools those limitations decrease."
From claims made on the back of the box of the Actron CP9690, it's the "Top-of -the-range" product of Actron. It claim to be able to provide "manufacturer specific live data", that professional grade scanners can provide, but in practice you can only get features of the most basic Actron Model.
I am almost 100% sure that the Actron CP9690 will be able to work properly with my Australian Toyota Hilux if Bosh update the software of this scan tool, and include the Hilux as an available model in the database of the CP9690.
There are several other scanners that look the same as the CP9690, and the manufacturer is also "Bosch Automotive Service Solutions Inc." These include the OTC 3211, Bosch 1300, Bosch 1350, etc. These products are also sold on Amazon Australia.
It appears to me if the software of all these devices are similar. Therefore, I assume all of these scanners will have the same problem to identify a Toyota Hilux.
Due to the fact that the CP9690 is unable to detect my 2008 Toyota Hilux, and that the Hilux is not even in it's database, I consider this product being a failure as OBD2 scan tool for the Australian Market. Rather spend your money on a different scan tool than can actually read Manufacturer Specific live data, such as Engine, Airbag & ABS data. Manufacturer specific Engine Data is valuable information. Without Manufacturer Engine data, this scanner is absolutely worthless to me.
It appears to me if Bosch isn't interested and/or willing to fix the problems with this scan tool. Information provided on the listing on Amazon Australia doesn't mention the actual limitations of these products to customers outside the USA.
But, the Actron CP9690 also claim to be able to read OBD1 live data. You don't have many options in regards to scanning live data on old OBD1 vehicles, and to get live data from an old OBD 1 vehicle. Due to the current travel restrictions I am not able to test the OBD1 abilities of this scanner on an old OBD1 Toyota.
This scanner appears to be well made and of good quality, but it looses all it's stars due to it's inability to identify an Australian OBD 2 Toyota Hilux. I still need to try it's OBD 1 capabilities.
I am disappointed in this product. The high price of this product doesn't justify it's limitations outside the USA. It appears to me if the Acton CP9690 needs a significant software update to make it compatible with OBD 2 vehicles sold outside the USA.

Furthermore, its a scan tool made for the US only. They call an SUV a truck and it lacks many international car models, so it dosent fully work on cars like the diesel landcruiser.
Waste of money
Useless scan tool, may as well get one of those cheap $10 ones online
