Update: May 2021. Updates for this camera’s software are no longer provided. I have not seen a update in at least two years. Camera often locks up and must be restarted. Motion sensing is poor now.
Now, two years later, it doesn’t work at all - I can’t get it to reconnect to the WiFi.
I’m done with it- avoid this thing at all costs. Waste of money.
Through the Alarm.com app, you can also set the camera up to record based on specific sensor events (ie, front door or garage door sensors open) to capture activity that occurs without motion being detected or the doorbell being pushed (I've found this useful to see who's entering/leaving through the garage, whereby the motion sensor would not be tripped since no activity on the front porch). You can also set the color of the door Bell's illumination to any hue in the color spectrum, as well as it's brightness.
I've had the camera for 11 months now and it works but with a necessary modification; after 10months, the camera housing broke at the bottom, where the security screw secures the camera to the mounting bracket and electrical connection (the screw is inserted through the bottom of the installation bracket and threads into a plastic loop within the camera housing; the plastic loop is what broke). My best guess is that after baking in the sun through the summer (my front door gets SW exposure to afternoon/evening sun), and then the first week of winter's extreme cold blast after an unseasonably warm week - the quick temperature change was enough to crack the plastic - OR - maybe it was knocked into by someone entering or leaving the house, which is possible as this camera will standout from the door frame about 1.25"-1.50" in place of your original doorbell button...either way in how it broke, it shouldn't have been THAT fragile. The part that broke is THE critical part to not only secure the camera to the home, but also hold the camera to the electrical supply running the doorbell chime - the piece is also too small /fragile to super glue when broken/cracked. While a replacement bracket is available, there are no replacement parts available for the camera housing since it is a sealed unit; so the only way to replace that is to purchase another camera, which is a very pricey solution on the consumer, to the manufacturer's faulty choice in materials.
With this piece broken, the camera will not work unless you find another way to hold the camera tightly to the bracket (I am temporarily using a wire tie until crafting something more aesthetically pleasing on my front door frame in the spring).
Specific to the headline of this review, others should be aware that while SkyBell has a 1yr warranty on their products, they will not honor the warranty if purchased from an unapproved 3rd party retailer. My best guidance is do your homework before purchasing any SkyBell camera from a 3rd party to determine if they are approved by SkyBell, or ask your Alarm.com service provider what their warranty is and purchase through them (ie-Frontpoint, Brink's, etc)....after all, this is a pretty pricey piece of equipment.
As I mentioned, I purchased my camera from S^3 Security Supply on Amazon; they are also an Alarm.com dealer but not on SkyBell's list of authorized 3rd party retailers for some reason, and can not offer a warranty so I'm hosed. However, I don't blame S^3 Security Supply for this, as SkyBell is using the "unauthorized 3rd party retailer excuse" as a shield against standing behind their own faulty design and choice in materials.
On the other hand, I cannot speak highly enough of the customer service and time spent by Zachary at S^3 Security Supply (aka Sabel Security Services @ SabelSecurity.com) in trying to find a solution for me; I have over a dozen emails between myself and Zachary over the past 3 weeks, troubleshooting the problem and keeping me informed of his efforts to find parts, research warranty status, and discussing replacement options; once we determined there was no warranty this evening, Zachary did offer to sell a replacement to me at cost, however I still found it too pricey to justify replacing with another unit that had the same faulty design/materials and likely to fail again in the same spot - so I will find an alternative way to use what I have and fix SkyBell's faulty design in casing materials, and will likely avoid SkyBell in the future.
While I've no reason to have other dealings with S^3 Security Supply being that my alarm.com monitoring is through Brink's, I do want to share that I was impressed with the urgency and amount of care S^3 showed while helping me with this problem, all despite the rest of my system and monitoring service being supported by another company. I have a highly positive impression of this business and will keep S^3 in my rolodex as I come due for a refresh of my security panel/sensors or in my next home, and would recommend them to anyone in the Northeast US looking for a consultation on their security needs.
Thank you again, S^3 Security Supply = SabelSecurity.com
The low rating is because the unit I received has a very foggy, out of focus view. Amazon technical support was on it though, and I should be getting the replacement unit next week. If the new unit is clear, I will update the review.
