Product Description

BECAUSE BIG DOGS NEED MORE THAN JUST A NORMAL DOG BED

Meet the world famous Big Barker, the only dog bed scientifically calibrated, and clinically proven to improve quality of life for large dogs. After serving over 150,000 dogs and their families, we know you need 3 things in an orthopedic dog bed:

1. Must provide clinically proven support & comfort, can't flatten over time

2. Must be easy to clean

3. Must look great in your house

We make a dog bed precisely engineered to provide perfectly distributed weight support for extreme comfort & durability. Looks like a beautiful piece of furniture, feels like a high-end velvety couch on your skin. Easy to clean, just unzip the machine washable cover.

Please understand: this is NOT a normal dog bed.

The Big Barker is a REAL bed - made for dogs.

Normal dog beds might look pretty, and they might call themselves "orthopedic" or "memory foam", but they don't feel like you'd expect your own bed to feel. The Big Barker is a therapeutic mattress, uniquely engineered to keep dogs youthful for longer and to bring older dogs back to their best.

The Big Barker does more than just provide a comfy place to sleep… it will give your dog a better life. And we can prove it!

University of Pennsylvania study finds Big Barker beds improve quality of life for big dogs in just 28 days

In a scientific clinical study conducted by University of Pennsylvania, owners reported that the Big Barker bed reduced joint pain and stiffness, improved joint function and gait, and led to improved nighttime restfulness in large dogs with arthritis.

To scientifically determine if Big Barker dog beds could reduce joint pain and improve mobility in big dogs with arthritis, University of Pennsylvania researchers gave forty dogs - each at least three-years-old and weighing 70+ pounds - Big Barker beds and activity monitors to measure their sleep and movement.

Independent data analysis showed the following improvements to the mean score: 17.6% improvement in joint function; 21.6% reduction in pain severity; 12.5% reduction in joint stiffness; 9.6% improvement in gait; and 15.1% improvement in quality of life.

Big Barker is the first dog bed that’s been clinically proven to improve quality of life for large dogs.

We're leading the way in taking big dog joint health seriously. Join us on the journey!

Proudly Made in the USA

Your Big Barker is made in our small Pennsylvania workshop with 7" of our proprietary American Made OrthoMedic foam. Engineered as a high-end mattress, but specifically calibrated for big dogs. Supports every curve of a big dog's body. Big dogs don't sink through the bed, full-grown humans feel comfortable laying on a Big Barker. Lay on it yourself and you'll feel the difference immediately.

Our American Made 7-inch, 3-layered foam mattress is durable, comfortable, and meets CertiPUR-US standards for content, emissions, and durability & has been analyzed by independent, accredited testing laboratories.

10 Year "Won't Flatten" Promise

This bed won't flatten. Our world-famous Big Barker foam will retain at least 90% of its shape & support for the next 10 years or we'll replace it for free!

Most other "orthopedic" dog beds are mass-produced on foreign factory assembly lines, using cheaper, lower-quality Chinese-made foam. That’s why they flatten so fast!

They're less expensive, but you'll see and feel the difference immediately. Worse, dangerous fillers have been found in imported foam. Nobody wants their treasured companion sleeping on toxins.

Ideal for dogs of all ages.

Provides extra relief to dogs suffering from joint pain, recovering from surgery, or living with conditions like arthritis, hip dysplasia, or other joint, bone, or muscle disorders. This is why Big Barker beds are actively used inside Ryan Veterinary Hospital at University of Pennsylvania.

10-Year "Can't Flatten, Won't Flatten" Promise

Forget the frustration and ongoing expense of dog beds that flatten like pancakes. When a dog bed flattens, it loses any shred of support it started off with.

Once it starts getting lumpy or develops a crater in the middle, your dog's bed becomes about as comfortable as sleeping on a paper-thin bath mat.

That's why your Big Barker is built to protect your big dog for at least 10 years, without losing any of its uniquely supportive power.

Unrivaled Support

Vets will tell you that up to 80% of large dogs will suffer from joint pain as they age. Painful conditions like arthritis and hip dysplasia can cause dogs to lose quality of life and struggle with mobility.

To fight against these problems, we've engineered a special bed to keep dogs youthful for longer, and bring older dogs back to their best.

Big Barker's unique 3-stage foam construction envelops sensitive joints in buttery comfort foam used in the outer layers, while the middle layer provides resilient support and blocks pressure points from driving into the hard floor below.

Proven by 100,000+ Pet Parents

Since 2012, Big Barker beds have been put to the test in the homes of over 100,000+ loving pet parents.

At first glance it may seem like a lot of money for a dog bed - but remember, this is NOT a normal dog bed. This is a REAL bed. It's a therapeutic mattress for your dog.

Don't just take it from us - check out the reviews, feel the love, and meet thousands of dog owners just like you who overcame the natural initial "sticker shock" and have no regrets whatsoever. The Big Barker is America's most beloved dog bed for a reason.

Made In The USA

Big Barker will only ever make beds in America using American made foam.

Most pet beds in the store and online are made on foreign assembly lines using cheap Chinese foam & fillers.

Like so many Americans, we try to "buy American" whenever we can - and we wanted to finally give pet parents the chance to buy a dog bed they could rely on for the long haul.

Bottom line: We only trust American workers and American foam to give your dog the care they deserve.

How To Choose the Right Size for Your Dog

The most important measurement is the width of the bed. What you want to do is have your dog stand up straight, and measure from the bottom of the paw to the top of the hip or shoulder. This is the amount of room that your dog needs to be in a full 100% stretch position. Compare that measurement to the width of our sizes. You'll want an extra 3-4 inches. For example, if your dog measures 25", you'll do great with the Large, which is 30" wide. But if your dog is 28", you'll want to bump up to the 36" wide XL. Note: the foam composition is the same between the Large, XL, and Giant sizes. All 3 sizes can easily support a 300 lb dog if they have to.

Sample Breed Recommendations:

Large (48" x 30" x 7")

Labrador, Boxer, Golden Retriever, Pit Bull, Husky

Extra Large (52" x 6" x 7")

German Shepherd, Rottweiler, Doberman, Newfoundland, Mastiff

Giant XXL (60" x 48" x 7")

Great Dane, Irish Wolfhound. The Giant is also recommended for two large dogs that share a bed.

MESSAGE FROM THE OWNER

See this pic above? That's me and Hank. I miss him greatly. He was my best bud for 13 years, through good times and bad, he never left my side. He just wanted to slap a smile across my face. He was the one constant l could always rely on. l miss that hairy beast more than l can tell you. But in an important way, Hank lives on, not just in my photos and memories, but also in the lives of over 100,000 other big dogs across America. You see, you might say Hank started a movement....

It all started way back in 2005, the day I came home from work and found him limping. I rushed him to the vet, who dropped a bombshell on me. Hank might need a new hip. He had an early case of hip dysplasia. He’s far from alone. I've since learned that up to 80% of all big dogs will have to face joint conditions like arthritis, degenerative joint disease, or complications from earlier injuries. Sometimes from genetic conditions like hip dysplasia, but often just because of the pounding their joints take day-after-day from carrying around all their “big dog” weight. Sometimes these joint problems steal their mobility when they're older, that’s when you see them start to “slow down.” It’s not natural aging, it’s their joints starting to fail them. When things get real bad sometimes the only option is to release them from their pain. Saddest of all, research has shown dogs have evolved over thousands of years to hide their pain, so not to show weakness to predators. So day after day... they just suffer in silence!

I begged the vet, “What can l do?” Hank was my best pal. How could I help him live a long healthy life and maximize our chances against a painful and potentially life-altering surgery? The vet recommended 3 things, one of which was to get Hank a great dog bed - because just like a human needs their joints cushioned in bed, so does a dog. Especially big dogs prone to serious joint problems.

So l went to all the pet stores to hunt down the best dog bed l could possibly find for Hank. I tried several, pulled them off the shelves and laid on them myself - it was no better than laying on a bath mat. My elbows and hips were driving right into the floor. Not good! None of the beds l tested were good enough for Hank, that was for sure. Especially once he grew into a BIG dog! So I spent the next 6 years experimenting with different dog beds. Tried everything from thick, plush beds to different “orthopedic” and “memory foam” style beds. Better than the pet store beds, but they always flattened and fell apart after a while. None could ever support his 92 lbs, he’d always eventually sink through to the floor. I found myself coming to a life-changing conclusion: l realized that Hank, and any other big dogs like him deserve much, much better than a “normal” dog bed - they deserve a REAL BED!

So I put my thinking cap on, because as luck would have it, my background was in the pet supply business. I picked up the phone to one of the world’s top foam engineers. I shared my vision with him for creating the most supportive, extra-comfy dog bed on the planet. A bed built-to-last, Made in America, and scientifically-calibrated to cushion every pressure-point on a dog's body. A bed that could easily take the weight of even a Great Dane or a Mastiff. Most importantly, a bed worthy of the love l had for Hank, and the love each of us has for the amazing dogs who mean so much to us. Long story short and today, over 7 years later, 100,000+ dogs across America sleep on a Big Barker dog bed. Vets recommend our beds to pet parents, and vets make sure their own dogs sleep on a Big Barker. Buzzfeed, The Huffington Post, NBC, FOX and CBS have all told our story. You'll see why if you take a few moments to read the reviews right here on Amazon.

You'll notice that the Big Barker costs more than other dog beds that you'll see online. That's not an accident. I needed to create the first serious upgrade to normal dog beds. The whole point of designing the Big Barker was to make a mattress which allows you to provide the best possible quality of care to your dog. In my opinion, the only way to do that with integrity is to use the BEST quality materials, using only AMERICAN made foam, and to have the beds handmade right here in the USA. It costs more to make beds this way, but I felt that other dog owners would want to have the choice to feel as good as I did when I saw Hank snoring away on his Big Barker. He fought through the pain in hips and soreness from his arthritis because he didn't want to let me down, it made me proud to know that he had a bed that didn't let him down either.

Shortly after this picture was taken, Hank and l spent his final day together. He woke up and inhaled a leftover piece of his special cake made just for him with sweet potato, cream cheese, and bacon. Then we hopped in the car for one last “Wilderness Day.” He seemed like he remembered the spot because he was basically jogging once his feet hit the grass. He hadn’t moved that quickly in a long time. He trotted at his own pace and sniffed all the interesting animal pee he wanted. He had a picnic with McDonalds cheeseburgers and went home when he got tired. After resting a bit, he scarfed down a seared (but very rare) NY strip steak. I didn’t see him chew at all. He always loved steak. It was a long day, and he didn’t have the energy left for one last nighttime walk in the park, so we both laid down and had a sleepover on the floor. The vet came the next morning and he passed away peacefully. He was my best bud for 13 years. He was a good dude who never left my side no matter what. I miss him terribly. Of course, his legacy lives on. Hank is the original “Big Barker” and the inspiration behind this movement to start protecting the joints of the dogs we love so much. Thanks for reading!

- Eric Shannon, Owner, Big Barker

I just made a second purchase of this bed, but I don't think I reviewed it the first time around. I bought the first one in July of 2014, and it is practically as good as new. I have a dog with incontinence problems, so I also bought both a second cover and two waterproof liners so I could rotate them out without having to wait until the covers were washed. This is a huge expense but there are not a lot of beds out there that provide the option for replacement covers and waterproof liners, and it looks to be worth it so far.A bed the size I need is pretty much impossible to wash, so the removable covers and the water protection is a must. The previous beds from a different company I had were comfy, over 100 dollars each, and lasted ten months before they started to deteriorate to the point I felt they needed to be replaced, not to mention, not being waterproof. At that price, the quality was actually pretty good overall, but far inferior to the Big Barker, primarily due to the quality of the cover. My dog is a scratcher, and that is not a problem with this cover. The quality of the foam is also better in comparing it to my previous bed, though to be honest, the cheaper version's foam has held up pretty well, as it should at that price anyway. It's just that I have had to hand wash the foam, the cover was a royal pain to put on, and now is pretty much torn up, and I am not a seamstress to make new ones. They have been relegated to staying at a relative's house for weekend visits to try to get some more use out of them.In contrast, the Big Barker foam is in great shape after a year and a half of use. I would say these are more like a fairly firm mattress instead of one that you sink into, and it took a while for my dogs to decide it was soft enough. I don't think there's been any appreciable flattening, though I guess I'll be able to tell more when I get the new one for comparison. In addition to incontinence issues, I have had to deal with other unpleasant incidents that I am going to refrain from describing, and the waterproof cover has protected the foam completely so far, even during what I can only call the great floods that have occurred a few times. (I am optimistic that we have recently found the right combination of medicines, by the way.) More than once I have taken the covers off dreading what condition I would find the foam in, only to be pleasantly surprised that it survived unscathed. The main cover itself is very good fabric, so it retards the moisture some itself, and the inner waterproof cover has done the trick. It is fabric, and not plastic, so of course it can't be 100% waterproof, but my experience so far has had the foam 100% protected. I try to wash them sparingly since I feel like repeated washing might reduce it's ability to resist water, but so far, so good! Note that this does not come with the waterproof liner; it is an additional expense, but at the price of the bed, I think it is worth it to provide the added protection even without the kind of issues I have faced. The outer covers, as I said, have also held up well. In a moment of gastric discomfort, my dog was biting on things to try to relieve her distress and tore a small hole on one of the covers on the corner of the bolster. That's the only damage that has occurred, and a determined chewer could of course do more, but this really is a tough cover. It doesn't look brand new due to washing and doggy living, but it still looks good. I never seem to be able to get the cover situated right the first time when I change them out; in fact right now it is actually upside down on the bed because laziness, but when I do change them, they are relatively easy to change; there's none of the struggling and pushing and straining like there often is with foam covers. The large size does make it awkward, but it is still easily manageable for me alone if I just could remember which side is up!That brings me to why I got a second one, which is for my second dog who has been sleeping on something else by preference, but has really been trying to take a turn on the Barker lately to the point I feel he needs one for himself. I bought the first with an eye to getting a second if it worked out, and the time has come. I have spent so much money on a succession of inferior beds with all kinds of padding that did not do more than a welcome mat would. The prices of the beds kept creeping up, but the durability just wasn't there. As these large dogs age, their joints really are going to need some protection to be comfortable, so the considerable expense of these beds is offset by not needing to replace them every six months to a year. My dogs will have to get a lifetime of use from them to make the expense justifiable, but I have no reason to expect that won't happen.

Although I had free 2 day shipping with Prime, I got the bed in one day. I also bought the waterproof liner, and that came in 2 days.

We have an 8 year old yellow English Lab that weighs about 95 pounds. She had been sleeping on a baby's crib mattress for about 6 months. Every night she was up, down and around, on the bed, then back on the mattress, get up, circle circle, scratching, more shifting, and then back off and on the floor, and this went on every night. I had been looking at this Big Barker bed for a while, and just couldn't get past the price of it. When I finally decided just to go ahead and order, I then spent several days trying to decide whether to get the large or extra large. The crib mattress was 2 inches shorter in width and 4 inches shorter in length than the large dog bed, but the extra large bed was going to be massive in size compared to the crib matters, and I had to factor in that she currently slept on my side of the bed and I would then be having to walk on the extra large every time I got in and out. So I bought the large size, and it turned out just perfect. Even when stretched out length size as labs do, she has several inches to spare.

The bed comes in a pretty small box compared to what the actual size was to be. It comes wrapped in what is a heavy duty Saran wrap and then expands immediately as you unwrap it. Within a minute it was poofed out into the full size bed. Amazing really. The cover came right off with the large zipper along the back. The waterproof liner slid right on, then the fabric cover went right back on it without any issues at all.

The first night our lab went right to it, circled once and flopped right down. I don't think she moved all night, and neither one of us heard her, and we think she was in the same exact to the inch position when we got up. She's been sleeping on it for several nights now, and she continues to be content with it.

I have to be honest and let you know that I laid down on it and I wished it was my mattress as I currently am having a very love/hate relationship with my mattress and I toss and turn during the night trying to find a better position. We are only the first week in, but I really don't think there will be any issues.

The waterproof liner was a surprise. I didn't really know what to expect with it, but it turned out to be a really high end type of material, very soft to the touch, not plastic or a tarp material at all, and it does not create any sound at all. So glad that was available, not for the dog issues, but I have been known to drop my water bottle on the bed in the past.

When I first read about this bed and did a little research (Thank you WorldMastiffForum.com!), I wanted one right away. After I saw the price, I had to think about it for a few months. We didn't really need another bed yet as I had been taking good care of the two most recent $100 plus orthopedic beds we had by keeping them covered with fitted sheets and fleece throws that I could take off and wash frequently, but the foam was gradually flattening despite my best efforts of flipping and rotating the beds. Finally, we decided our rescue babies, a 130 lb. female mastiff and 120 lb. male great dane/Labrador retriever mix, would get a giant Big Barker to share for Christmas this year!
Unfortunately, we found out in October that our male needed TTA surgery for a torn ligament in his knee. We decided to order the bed early so that he could get used to it and then have a comfortable place to recuperate after surgery. When it arrived and we finally got it unwrapped from all the plastic wrap that compressed it to about a fourth of its size, we were surprised at just how large and heavy it was! As per the instructions, it took the foam a few days to fully expand at which point my husband hauled the bed upstairs to our bedroom. We added the waterproof liner and the cover (it took both of us to do this), then topped it with a mattress pad and a sheet that can be taken off and washed a couple times a week.
At first the dogs weren't that thrilled with the bed, but over the course of a week, it became their preferred bedtime spot. Both of them can lay on it comfortably, and when only one dog is using it, they can stretch out as far as they want and still be supported. We moved the bed to the main level and surrounded it with a folding pen for use while recuperating and it has been wonderful for that purpose! There was more than enough room for our boy to stretch out, get up and turn around. We also had plenty of room to sit beside him and do passive range of motion exercises on his leg. I have to confess, we even stretched out beside him and snuggled for a lot longer than we would have had it not been so comfy! It's been two weeks since his surgery, the surgeon said he's doing remarkably well, and he's been given a little more freedom to move about. Guess what? After letting him out this afternoon so he could move into the adjacent room which is carpeted and contains two older hundred-dollar-beds that we restuffed, he chose instead to return to his Big Barker bed!
We are impressed with the quality and construction of our Big Barker giant bed with headrest (...which they use adorably!) and are very happy we made this purchase. Yes, it was expensive, but the beds we had been buying weren't cheap and those wore out. We even ordered memory foam mattresses and egg crate foam (again, not cheap) and cut that down to restuff a couple of beds hoping to get a bit more use out of them. With Big Barker offering an unheard of 10 year warranty, this bed will likely outlive many of the dogs for whom it's purchased. We'll be buying another Big Barker as soon as those other beds we have go flat ...or I get tired of stuffing, rotating and flipping them. ;)

Update: Since our original purchase of the GIANT Big Barker bed reviewed above (which is still as full and supportive as ever), we've expanded our collection. We bought an XL bed with headrest for our dog with knee problems to use downstairs and stacked the two existing ortho beds for our mastiff. It seems that even two regular beds can't compete with the comfort of a Big Barker though as she would find ways to get him off the new bed so she could steal his spot. The only solution was to order another XL bed, our 3rd Big Barker in 9 months! It's a huge testament to a product when your oversized lap dog chooses to lie on his bed in another room over laying with you on the couch, but that's exactly what happens most nights. We highly recommend Big Barker and look forward to more products from this company!

Yes these beds are expensive but well worth the money! I bought the Big Barker bed with headrest for my 2.5 yr old 85 lb lab mix. She had TPLO surgery and it is helping her recover tremendously. She had bedsores that are now healing since she has been using it. It is a firm bed, no doubt, but that's what I think she likes about it. I have a softer bed for her as well (different, cheaper brand) so that she can choose whichever one she likes; 90% of the time she chooses the Big Barker bed. I would highly recommend this product. She really likes the headrest so I am glad I paid the extra money for that model.

5.0 out of 5 stars The cover is easy to clean

I bought this product for my Labrador, who suffers from arthritis in the spine.
She took to it immediately and even uses the pillow!
The cover is easy to clean. I use sticky roll and a damp cloth if I need to.
I have not washed the cover as I protect it with a blanket in the winter and a cool sheet in the summer. I air it outside once a month and also vacuum it.
Wish the manufactures would make funky fitted sheets for it as well.
My girl would highly recommend it! I got the 7" as she is a big lab.
I have had this bed since May 2017 and it is still in excellent condition. I have not washed the cover as I protect it with a blanket. I air it outside once a month and also vacuum it. Really worth the money - one of my best buys ever!

5.0 out of 5 stars ... as I couldn't find one that my dog could comfortably fit on (she's 125 lbs)

I did a lot of research on beds for large dogs as I couldn't find one that my dog could comfortably fit on (she's 125 lbs). I kept coming back to the Big Barker, but was hesitant because of the price. I finally decided that I had to go ahead, and am so happy I did. The bed is extremely well made, and my dog is very comfortable. The first night she had the bed, is the first night she didn't sleep at our bedroom door. She didn't even get up to meet us in the morning as she was in such a deep sleep! We all know that large dogs can suffer from joint problems, and I think having this bed will help to keep her happy and healthy as she gets older. Great job Big Barker!

Very quick prompt service. I ordered on Bank Holiday Weekend, and was here on the next working day tuesday to the UK. It was very well packaged, and came with unpacking instructions. My 10 year old Staffie, has taken to this bed really well, when in the past he has been uncertain of new beds. This bed is at the higher budget range, but worth every penny, as he has slept in it, very well every night, and has often been retiring to it during the day, which is unheard of for him! The information that has also been provided with this is very helpful, and looks very easy to clean for the future. I would highly recommend this product to any dog lover, and especially for the older larger breed.

Thanks again to Eric, Matt and Team, you have been a pleasure to deal with.
