I previously was using a Dell D6000 dock with my work laptop, but I found that the required, proprietary DisplayLink drivers that enabled multiple HDMI outputs slowed my Ubuntu machine to a crawl. The Dell dock works pretty flawlessly with Windows 10, but *I* do not work well with Windows 10. One day, the experience with the Dell dock started to degrade and then another day it didn't work at all -- the Dell dock actually fried by USB-C port which required repair. All of this headache pushed me to sacrifice a little bit of desk tidiness and convenience and give the Anker hub a try.
I have 2 monitors, an Ethernet connection, keyboard, mouse, and a power cable that I need to plug in every day when I arrive at work. With this unit, I plug one HDMI into the single output available on my laptop, and another into this dongle -- effectively giving me two monitors without extra, poorly optimized drivers. It's not *quite* as convenient as the dock I was using as now I need to plug in power, one HDMI and then this dongle, but it is the best I can do short of buying a new computer with better display outputs. Unless DisplayLink open-sources the Linux drivers so the community can improve them, I don't see myself ever using a product with their technology again.
The difference is night and day. I no longer experience 100% CPU usage running VSCode or any issues with my monitors being identified by the OS. The only thing I might prefer is if they had this device in a less portable design. I want this but as a dock that sits on my desk with a longer wire, so I can hide some of the cable spaghetti away.
All of that is to say that this is a great product that allows you to have all of your peripherals (or almost all of them in my case) plugged into one device that can be quickly plugged into your laptop when you sit down at your desk. Even if you don't have ultra-specific requirements like I did and just want a USB hub, you can't go wrong with this one as far as I can tell so far.
I have since found a “sort-of” solution with my laptop involving a chip clip camped on the outside frame... anyway, I received yet another email from Anker following up on my 2-star review and that they had sent me a replacement. I was actually about to reorder the product, but now I don’t have to! I had no idea customer reviews were taken so seriously, but It’s great to see this level of customer support from Anker. I’ve change my review to 5-stars. Whether the replacement product will work is yet to be seen, but I assume it will. I still don’t know what the cause of my laptop issue was or how to fix it more thoroughly without spending loads of $$, but regardless once I have tested and verified that the replacement Anker product works, I will add an update to my review.
When I saw Anker had their own solution to a USB-C hub, I knew I needed it. I use an external monitor (1080p) for school with a wired keyboard (see picture). I also really like having the option of plugging into ethernet directly. This is the perfect product for my needs. It has been a super reliable plug-and-play hub. The device does not get hot at all (I'm not even sure I'd call it warm) even when using 2 USB ports and the HDMI port for a couple of hours. The size is perfect, and it plugs snugly into the USB-C port on my Dell. There is a small indicator light on the hub which does not bother at all when all lights are off. I'm really very happy with this product, it has been very worth the money for me.
