AND IT SHOWS.
Been using it for two weeks now, replacing my 2009 24-inch iMac. This one is noticeably lighter in weight, thinner screen/guts and slightly thinner aluminum base. Aesthetically, not much has changed in the look of the machine in ten years, but that’s ok; it’s was long ago pared down to about as simple as design gets (I am a designer, so I notice this kinda crap that nobody else thinks about).
Not certain, but I think I paid about the same price ten years ago, but I have probably twice the power and storage of the old model, which was the most powerful off-the-shelf iMac that they offered at the time. I bought the new 3.7GHz 6-core 9th-generation Intel Core i5 processor, 2TB, probably more than I need, but what the Hell, I’m already spending nearly 2k. My very first Mac cost me $1800 in 1997, and that was just for the CPU; I still had to purchase a monitor. And NO Internet! So, the price doesn’t scare me.
My old computer still had plenty of extra space, so I’m not at all worried about running out. I used the “Migration Assistant” app to transfer files through Wi-Fi, but it took about 18 HOURS to do, not kidding. If I had a cable it probably would’ve gone faster. At least I didn’t need to buy an additional hard drive to do it.
This new machine definitely feels a bit faster, even though I’m still using DSL (I know). What really struck me was the improved screen resolution. This thing is like looking at a photograph. Now, When I use my old computer I feel like I’m looking at some kind of primitive cave painting with about three PPI. Seriously.
It came with a standard rechargeable wireless keyboard and mouse, but I broke down and paid $112 (from Apple’s Amazon page) for an extended keyboard with ten-key because I’m used to the layout. If this one ever goes bad, I’ll have a backup. Glad to say that both the mouse and keyboard connected immediately, no screwing around with with a bunch of complex instructions. And both recharge very quickly (and stay charged) from the USB cord included.
The only real drawbacks are that there is no longer a CD/DVD player, which was eliminated years ago (like everyone else). I still have plenty of music and old files on CD, so it looks like I’ll need to either use my old computer or buy a CD/DVD peripheral to add to my iTunes library (which Apple is winding down) because of some “new and improved” music service B.S. that old farts like me don’t care about. But the kids will love it, I’m sure.
The other thing is that the wireless keyboard has no USB ports for charging devices, which I should have known. After all, it isn’t physically connected to a power source. Duh. No worries; I just bought a $9.00 USB splitter and I’m good.
So far I’ve only had two problems: one time I froze up while searching websites and couldn’t quit my browser (Chrome), not even from the force quit menu. I had to shut it down and restart it manually with the power button at the back of the machine.
The other problem was that the screen wouldn’t shut down automatically after several minutes of non-use. It had done so before. Even when I selected “Sleep” from the pull-down menu, it would only go to sleep for a few minutes and then the screen would light up again without touching anything. A restart fixed this, but I am a bit worried about this and the above issue.
I hope these things don’t become a recurrent problem. This is my fourth Apple computer (plus two iPod Touches and two iPhones) and I have NEVER had issues before, but I know they aren’t perfect. Any company can inadvertently manufacture a defective product, no matter how good their reputation is.
Oh, and though some people don’t care about this, I do. The packaging is greatly improved compared to previous models that I’ve had, not that there were ever any problems in the past. The main unit’s screen and vents are covered in a protective plastic film, and the boxed keyboard/mouse are secured by styrofoam, wrapped in plastic, and placed in a hinged boxed. Then, that box is placed in yet another box, a plain brown cardboard one. These things travel thousands of miles, but they’re packed accordingly.
Overall, I’m happy with the product, but I am going to keep on eye on the above-mentioned issues. Looks like the Amazon price has gone up since I bought mine, but go to Apple’s site; I’ll bet their direct pricing has increased as well.
