    A tale of two keyboards.
I see that I can't write separate reviews for the Das Keyboard 4 Professional and the 4Q so I'll put them both here.I've had a DK 4 for several years at work for several years and it's a workhorse. When we shut down the office in 2020 and started working remotely I missed it right away. I decided to buy one for my home office. My workspace at home doesn't have the best lighting so I bought a DK 4Q, thinking the RGB backlight would help my old, tired eyes. The 4Q ended up having a few shortcomings that made it just not right for me. It's very well made. A tank, just like the DK 4 Professional. It's got good mass and the volume knob and basic multimedia controls are just enough. As I mentioned, there were some shortcoming though. It requires 2 USB plugs and the cable is quite thick. I would like to see them update the design with a removable (single) USB type C connector to run the keyboard, the backlighting, and the usb hub. Speaking of the hub, the 4Q's is only USB 2.0, not 3.0 like the 4 Professional. It feels like a step down. The per key RGB lighting is nice, allowing you to do just about whatever you want. The main legends on the keys are very bright BUT the secondaries -- the ~!@#$%^&*() seem very dim. I tried adjusting the brightness but it really didn't help. It's visible in a dark room but when the monitor is on its light washes it out. I'm not sure if it's because of the LED position on the switches, the keycaps, or a combination of both. The Q software honestly seems kind of clunky and I felt the idea of the applets for notifications on the keyboard to be kind of gimmicky and silly. Maybe I'm completely off base but the idea that keys changing color is going to notify me of system events seemed silly. It would take me longer to remember what an F1 key blinking red or a chartreuse E means. Plus, I don't spend that much time looking at the keys to begin with. Most of the time my eyeballs are watching the monitor -- which is much more adept at giving me information. I decided the 4Q just wasn't for me. Build wise I'd give it give stars *****, but for usability three ***.I ended up exchanging it for a 4 Professional, like the one I have at work. Although it too does have a couple flaws I find it to be a top notch keyboard. Like the 4Q I do wish they'd give it a removable cable. Either usb3 or type-C. As I mentioned my home office is a bit on the dark side. The gray on black keys on the DK 4 Pro are great in good light but did give me some problems when things weren't as bright. I ended up buying a set of lighter colored low profile replacement key caps and some rubber O rings to go under them and I feel like I've got the best keyboard EVER! My DK4 now gets 5 stars all across! *****
