The packaging is nice and simple and not much paper work and no plastic to deal with.
Now to the laptop itself, I know what it can and can't do even though I push it a little sometimes without noticing but it's still pretty fast. The screen is of amazing quality for such a cheap laptop but viewing angles not so much but remember how much this little guy cost. The laptop performs well and I use it for school. I currently have all my classes back to back in college so I don't need to wait over an hour for my next class on campus, but I will eventually not have that luxury so I will need a portable little laptop that I can do my homework on while I wait. So I use it for the browser(for the love of God use chrome and get rid of IE) I also use Microsoft word and that's it. After installing Microsoft office, software that has to be installed for my printer which includes Google chrome, and itunes(with like just a 10 song album since I'm waiting on my 64GB micro SD to arrive) I was left with exactly 11.1gb but sometimes it changes to 10.8-11.2 gb for some reason so I would recommend at least a 16 GB micro ad which cost $8 I think. The HDD size is not a problem to me since again it's only for school use and some music that's all I use it for.
The features are a large track pad for the size of the thing, 1 micro SD slot that allows the card to be flush with the body of the laptop, a micro HDMI port, a headphone and microphone in 1 port, charging port, and 2 USB 2.0 ports. It also has a webcam which if you ever had a psp camera you would notice it's the same quality. Long story short it's not a decent webcam but remember the price tag. The keyboard is ok I'm still getting used to chicalet style keys but I'm getting there!
Almost forgot the battery life! My laptop came fully charged which I didn't expect especially since it's been freezing where I lived and ups had to cancel my delivery due to severe snow weather. So to my surprise it was 100% charged as the laptop told me. I had it for a week I think and I just now charged it but it had 38% left so I expect 10-11 hours per charge and the small charger is amazing making it a truely portable laptop with a lot of battery life compared to just 5-6 on average for othe laptops
The finish of the laptop feels and looks high quality but it does attract grease from your finger and hands which tends to bother me more than it should.
The package includes the x205 laptop, small smartphone sized charger, manual, one drive code, warranty paper. It did not include a code for office 365 1 year membership but I heard that you can go to their site and get it. I don't need one since my school provides me with a free membership since I'm a student there.
In conclusion, as long as you understand what it can and can't do and aware of the HDD that leaves you 11gb after installing Microsoft office and a few more programs this makes a great laptop or eebook. It's truly portable and it's just perfect for students that just need to do basic work like browser and word processing. This will not play games like left 4 dead and other games like that which a little part of me dies every time I see someone asking that question. I will play minecraft from what I seen at 50 fps and 20-30 in multiplayer. So if you want of need a little laptop that can do basic things like browsing the Internet, Microsoft office and some music then this is a great deal and think of the battery life! And watching movies in 1080p HD is also doable pretty well with this little guy. I'm getting a gaming pc build going but I needed this NOW and it is perfect. Best $200 I ever spent!
I needed a laptop for classes that would be ultra portable, have above average battery life, and have processes like Excel, Powerpoint, etc. Everything I wanted and more!
Pros:
> SUPER light and easy to carry. I find it pretty sturdy, so smacking it accidentally won't really be the end of the world (but don't).
> Battery life is fantastic. I have been using it off and on all day for ~15 minute sessions and it's only now at 85%.
> Keyboard is pretty decent to type on, a little smaller than usual but I got used to it quickly.
> Powers up very fast, goes to 'sleep' and 'wakes up' almost instantaneously.
> Speakers are decently loud. Nothing exceptional and it's only 'crackled' once in the several days I've had it. Not even mad.
> Screen brightness and colors are way better than I expected.
Cons:
> The freaking fingerprints. On the blue color I feel like I leave my prints every time I touch it.
>The track pad is a little difficult to get used to. I'll probably get used to it in time, but I feel like it jumps around a little and is hard to click where I want. But honestly not as bad as I was expecting. (or I could just use a mouse...)
> At only 2GB RAM it is a little hard to run too many things at once. It's not a huge issue if you're just running 2 windows or so, but when I'm in Chrome (which is already a burden), I find it slows down immensely when I have more than 4 tabs open and one is a video or the like.
Over-all, I'm extremely happy with the purchase! As long as you don't spend more than $200, I think this machine hits the mark of everything I need it to do.
Aside from that, it's a decent computer. Not great; not lightning-fast (even out of the box); it's able to handle Office tasks though and that's mainly what I got it for. The display is nice and it can be adjusted from very dim to VERY bright--which is nice, because some screens never seem to light up enough.
If you have big hands, you might want to opt for a full-size laptop; typing on this keyboard puts my wrists at an uncomfortable angle, and the thought of using it for hours on end has visions of carpal-tunnel dancing in my head.
It's VERY lightweight--something I like--and I imagine it could easily fit into ANY standard-sized backpack. I went with the blue finish and, while it does seem to show fingerprints easily, I also don't care for aesthetics, and I don't really care if people are impressed by the fingerprinty-ness of my laptop (netbook) or not.
I think the biggest disappointment is the Microsoft Office subscription problem that others have mentioned before. While the computer DID come with a year of Office for free, it appears that it's a version that is somehow unrecognized by the computer and, thus, can't be activated. Essentially, it's a useless piece of paper that makes you a little sad when you look at it, and I hope Amazon will do something to rectify the situation.
Also, I recommend getting a wireless mouse. The touchpad, as I think others have said, has pretty awful tracking and doesn't respond well in the ways that it should. It doesn't have a scroll either, which is frustrating and cumbersome, and it's really just not worth enduring. You can buy a $10 mouse from amazon--I went with Tecknet--and you'll never have to deal with the Touchpad of Troubles again.
All things considered: I'd recommend this netbook. Just don't expect to play Skyrim or WOW on it anytime soon.
UPDATE: After exactly one month, the wireless card crapped out, and I was no longer able to connect to the internet. What was originally a mediocre computer is now just an 11.6-inch paperweight, and it's on its way to the landfill. Luckily, it gave up the ghost within the first 30 days, so I'm returning it to Amazon, but it's still a huge disappointment and now I'm out a laptop for at least two weeks. If zero stars were an option, this computer would deserve it.
Bottom line: don't waste your time or money on this laptop. It's total garbage, and ASUS should be ashamed.
