last’s longer, and produces excellent smooth tone.
Perhaps, imho, the best value for a top quality high performance mandolin or guitar pick where the player wants less attack and more power transfer to the strings.
For those used to a sharp edged pick (stiff or thin) this may feel wrong. A sharp edge produces a sound more easily and a stiff pick is more precise (with a stiff pick, the player has a better feel for when the pick leaves the string so timing is better).
But to use this pick, I had to learn to hold it differently. I had to hold it looser and let it wobble slightly in my hand as it moved the rounded edge across the strings. It produced a less brassy sound than my sharp edged picks, and seemed muted or dull. However, once I got the hang of the looser hold, I found I could easily control volume in my instrument, which was much more difficult with a sharp edged pick. Holding the pick tighter means I have to press harder to get a sound from the stings and the sound is louder. Holding the pick looser means I don't have to press so hard and the sound is softer.
This pick did change the tone of my instrument. I play these on a Cumbus Mandolin, 23", Light - Mid-East and I don't know how they will affect my wooden mandolin (I am away from home). But on my metallic resonator instrument, the sound was less tinny/brassy, more bell-like and more mellow. It sounds much more like a mandolin and less like a banjo.
I gave this four instead of five because right now I prefer the Dunlop Jazz III Pick 6-Pack, Black Stiffo, 1.38mm (black). These have the same rounded edge but have just a slight point on the tip.
I've used it out the bag and the plectrum was slightly wet and smells like there is some chemical left over, and it sounded muffled, the note sounds muddy and dark, can't get the treble strings to ring.
almost returned the whole pack, but then again, I get the idea to let all the plectrum out from the packaging and let it sit there overnight.
Next day comes, and I give the plectrum another try before I decided to return it, and then the magic happens.
it sounds great, chords is warm, and there is slight note separation that is nice, and the single note just has enough brightness to it that is pleasant.
I was pleasantly surprised.
The best part of this plectrum is beside the size and better grip, is, that all 3 sides are all equal, so if you wore out one of the sides, you just flip the plectrum side. One plectrum is like having 3 plectra in one.
highly recommended.
