But when it arrived today I was pleasantly surprised. It appears the design of the product has changed since those reviews were written. Because it now says -- right on the front page of the instructions -- press power button twice rapidly (within 2 seconds) and the UPS will beep twice letting you know that the power alarm function has been disabled. Do the same thing again and you will get one beep to turn it back on. I can confirm that this does work as stated, because I unplugged it after silencing the alarm and it didn't make a sound.
This is a really key feature as anybody who has one of these things can tell you. I just replaced a couple of the kind where you couldn't permanently disable the alarm, and so every time there was a power outage, even in the middle of the night, I had these damn things beeping all over the house (my computer, my wife's computer, TV, etc.) I understand why some people might want an alarm, but for most residential applications like how this will be used, it is just incredibly annoying.
This is a very basic, low-power unit, and is only viable for small loads. A desktop and small LCD monitor is about all it can handle, and even then you aren't going to have much time to shut down. But it is perfect for those little loads that don't draw much power and so don't need much of a battery for even a reasonably long run time. I am using mine to power the FiOS box and router to keep the internet up during brown-outs, and for small loads like that, I can probably get at least 10-15 minutes of run time. Enough to finish off an e-mail or check the weather radar and see how bad the storm is.
Note that only 3 of the outlets are powered when utility power drops out, which is actually reasonable given the small size of the battery and the very modest inverter size. It is also very small, think roughly 1.5 to 2 masonry bricks, which is quite reasonable for a UPS with its own battery and inverter. I had hoped to wall-mount it in the basement, but it is actually not wall mountable. There are no holes in the back of it for wall-mounting, so it has to sit on something, but it can sit upright or on its back, at least.
Do yourself a favor and don't use something like this for your $2,500 Panasonic Kuro Plasma television or your $3,500, tricked-out gaming PC. For very expensive electronics you really do need to spring for a true sine wave inverter that isn't going to beat on your power supply when it is operating during a black out. But this is fine for basic backup/shutdown needs on products that just aren't worth spending a lot of money to protect.
UPDATED:
So these did work for a good long while for me, but they have a security screw to keep you from taking it apart and replacing the battery. I have almost every kind of screwdriver and bit, but I don't have the right bit to take this apart and replace the battery. They basically don't want you messing with the innards because they say the battery can be replaced by "qualified service personnel." Hence, the security screw. On a device that costs less than $40, nobody is ever going to have these serviced and it is annoying that they make the battery so hard to change on purpose. It basically makes the device disposable. So, if you can afford it, I would buy a higher end version that makes changing the battery easier. Mine are now headed to the battery recycling thing at the local transfer station, which is kind of wasteful and silly.
Update: 8/18/13
I went away for vacation for a week and when I came back, My computer wont turn on, I checked and noticed the ups was off and I left the ups running for a whole week when I was gone. I tried turning it back on and it wont. I called Cyber-power tech support and followed the steps he told me. I pressed and held the power button for 5 seconds as he requested and it still did not turn on. So he sent me a email and I have to provide the information and the invoice for the return shipping label free of charge and when they received it, they will send me a new one at no cost. 5/5 tech support right there. So now I have to use my laptop in the mean time while I wait. But I'm still wondering how and why my ups was off and why it didn't turn back on.
Update 9/10/13
After all the wait, I emailed cyberpower and they said that they were doing their biannual inventory check and all orders in and out were frozen. I didn't mind but Id wish they would have sent me a email letting me know. But hey the replacement came and I received 2 cyberpower units, which ill keep the extra one as a spare. I'm loving the replacement so far and no Issues has arisen ever since. Thank you Cyberpower! Looking forward to doing business with you in the future.

Great for lighter uses - like your internet gear or security/surveillance.
Remember the battery is only good for a few years (average of 3 or 4 for me)
So put a birthdate sticker on them and search for a decent source for replacement batteries ($60)
