It has what appears to be a rugged, powder coated finish. As advertised, it will hold your instrument without having to remove the shoulder rest, should you use one.
There is a heavy duty plastic lever that swings down over the neck yoke. This keeps the instrument securely locked into the stand. The lever is easily operated with one hand. The lever is placed such that it is easiest to use with your right hand, which is perfect, allowing you to grab the instrument with your left.
My only complaint would be that it is low to the ground (just as it appears in the photo). Because of this, you probably don't want to leave it standing alone in the middle of an open area, where someone could trip over it. I use two if these when playing, and keep them right near my music and mic stands, so that they will not be able to get tripped over.
I especially love these because I have cats and they aren't always very careful and these keep the instruments up right and I don't have to worry about the cats knocking them over. For wall hangers, if you are comparing, I don't like that you can't lock the instrument in place, at least the ones I found didn't let you.
Having the violin visible and easily accessible makes it easy for my son to start practicing and saves time at the beginning and the end of practice sessions, since there is no need to take the violin out fo the case and then later put it away again.
