Product Description
The GEL-Venture 5 shoe provides great fit and everyday comfort, with Rearfoot gel cushioning technology and a rugged outsole ideal for a variety of terrains.
In 1949, Mr. Kihachiro Onitsuka began his athletic footwear company (Onitsuka Co., Ltd.) by manufacturing basketball shoes out of his living room in Kobe, Japan. He chose the name ASICS for his company in 1977, based on a famous Latin phrase "Anima Sana In Corpore Sano," which, when translated, expresses the ancient ideal of "A Sound Mind in a Sound Body." Taking the acronym of this phrase, ASICS was founded on the belief that the best way to create a healthy and happy lifestyle is to promote total health and fitness. Today, ASICS offers a full line of performance-driven athletic shoes and technical active sports apparel and accessories dedicated to bringing harmony to the body and soul.

For day to day normal use though they have held up wonderfully, lots of walking and light things like moving furniture now and then etc.
LOOK: Great colors (we have a few but the favorites are the blue/neon ones that I posted photos of below! A little different and cool looking but not too crazy or loud.) Nicely made, no weird stitching, even, definitely happy with Asic quality at the $50 ish price point.
FIT: Easy on/off and a very comfortable fit even from the start before they broke in (which did not take too long) True to size with a nice slight bit of room for a thicker sock like a Thorlo or a work sock and a replacement insole that's usually thicker than the stock one. If you are between sizes I would go up one and not down, though.
QUALITY: We for years thought of Asics as middle of the line, so so quality wise brand -- but these and the few others we have gotten seem to be quite well made and have held up great even at the year + mark. Our previous pair only started to really break down at 2+ years - pretty good in this price range. No noticeable wear or issues other than normal wear/tear -- will update as usual if this does change.
PRICE: Paid $45 during a sale. The normal price seems to be $55-$65 and still not a bad deal.
Overall - cool color options, easy to wear/true fit, nicely priced at around $50 and have held up nicely with normal use.

*comfortable, water resistant, durable, breathable
*I had to order a half size down
I bought these shoes for a two week safari across numerous types of terrain in Tanzania. I purchased a 9.5 at first, which was a bit too big, but I was still surprised by how comfortable they were. I ended up going a half size down from my usual 9.5. The size 9 shoes fit like a glove, but was concerned that they might not be rigid/tough enough to trek across the rocks, hills, mountains, volcanic dirt and ash, Serengeti grass, etc that I knew I'd encounter in Tanzania.
Once I arrived in Tanzania and began my trip, I quickly realized that my concerns were misplaced. The shoes provided me with excellent traction in the various setting I encountered, some semblance of water proofing while still being breathable (I'm not sure if they are Gore Tex, but my feet never got wet despite numerous rain storms), and ultimately turned out to be the most comfortable shoes I think I've owned. One anecdote on the comfort: I stepped on a thorn when I was barefoot in my tent very early in our trip. It was painful anytime I had my shoes off after that. When I put the shoes on there was no pain. They did a great job of spreading the pressure across my foot so that the area where the thorn penetrated my skin wasn't impacted.
I tried several pairs of Adidas trail running shoes before I settled on these Asics, and each pairs of Adidas couldn't even survive the initial at home comfort test. I'm very happy with these shoes. I highly recommend them for anyone who enjoys walking in outdoors settings, who needs a comfortable pair of shoes they can stand in for 8-10 hours for their outdoor job, or who is planning a tough trek where full on hiking boots might not be comfortable or appropriate.
It was time for a new pair and I'd read good things about the Gel-Venture, so I ordered a pair of 9-Ds from Amazon (after trying them on in a local store to make sure the size was right). But when I got them, I could immediately tell that they were too narrow, and they actually hurt one foot that's slightly bigger than the other. I thought that maybe my feet had swelled due to the heat wave we've been having here, and waited a few more days to try them again, but no difference. Same thing several days later.
So I'm going to be sending them back for a refund. Pity, as I really liked the shoes otherwise, and I do mostly trail running these days. However, when I saw that the same model, but in a wider 9-4E, had just jumped down in price here, I decided to order those and try them out. I get them in a couple of days. Hopefully, they'll fit much better and I'll keep them. Sadly, they're not available in my preferred color scheme, but I guess you can't have everything!
I'll post an update when I get the new pair and try them on. Bottom line, though, some ASICS shoes appear to run even smaller and/or narrower than they usually do. Perhaps my feet have just gotten bigger. But I had the same exact problem with a pair of DS-1000's that I bought last year, so who knows.
UPDATE: I ended up ordering a wide pair and they turned out to be too wide. And by the time they arrived, the first pair was now fitting me just fine. I think I know what the problem was. It's been incredibly hot and humid here in the northeast all summer, and I found out that such weather can make feet swell. That was almost certainly the case with me. Once it cooled down a bit and I tried them on again, they fit perfectly. I returned the second, wide pair, and tried running in the original, standard width pair.
They had slightly less arch support than I'm used to, but then they're listed as Neutral, not Stability shoes, so that makes sense. It took a little getting used to, but now I like running in them, on paved and unpaved surfaces (grass, trails, dirt paths, etc.) I wouldn't call these hard-core trail shoes, for long trail runs on poorly maintained trails with roots, rocks, streams, etc. But for casual off-road running they're more than adequate. Plus they're light and cushiony enough for paved surface running. They're also good for walking around.
Ironically, they're actually a bit too large sometimes, when I'm wearing very thin socks, so I insert an old pair of orthotics to make them fit properly. With thicker socks I don't need the orthotics. I'm wondering how they'll perform when it starts to get cooler, over fallen leaves, snow, ice, etc., when traction is important. But, overall, I like them so far.
