Bought this in 2016 (2 years ago) and used it to commute to classes on campus pretty much every day. Charged it throughout classes. Now I use it to ride through Boston from time to time. Still works perfectly well.
Brakes:
I've driven this down a steep hill at max speed and still managed to brake to a full stop within seconds. The brakes are as strong as you want to make them. They were a bit harsh at first, but I got used to tuning the strength after a few tries.
Weather:
It works pretty well in the rain, but puddles are a bit slippery and I've fallen a few times making sharp turns on wet ground. Completely my fault, this product isn't meant to support driving through such conditions, but it's definitely possible if you go slow and don't drive as recklessly as I do.
I've driven it through mild snow conditions multiple times as well - the salt on the ground used to counter ice tends to get stuck in the wheels, but water + oil fixes that very easily.
Portability:
Extremely portable. I usually fold it up as I'm walking into a building (yes, while moving). I've done it so often that I can go from riding it to pulling the dolly version within 5 seconds. I've carried it up stairs (it's only 20-some lbs or so) and in elevators. I kept it next to me in classes. At the time of purchase, I couldn't find a single other scooter as portable as this one.
Novelty:
From my experience, you'll get a mix of compliments and strange looks from random people. It's definitely a head-turner when blazing through a college campus.
Issues:
- The material used to hold the bell in place the left handle isn't that great, and my bell is pretty much dislocated. I could probably put in the effort to patch it up with some glue and rubber, but I rarely used it anyways.
- When driving through dirt/water/mud, the back wheel tends to kick it upwards. If you're driving in these conditions, and wearing a backpack, you'll probably find the bottom of it housing undesired substances from the ground.
ProTips:
As with most 2-wheeled vehicles, it's easier to balance at high speeds.
(It's definitely possible to drive at low speeds though - I frequently drove at walking speeds whilst accompanying my wheel-less friends to classes.)
Last remarks:
I bought this at $800 in 2016. At the time of writing, it's $600. If I had known the price would drop $200 in 2 years, I still would *not* have delayed my purchase. This scooter is extremely useful, has saved me many hours of time I would've had to spend walking or waiting for shuttles, and is very enjoyable to ride.
My scooter was shipped the same day I ordered it and arrived on-schedule. But the really impressive part was how well-packaged it was. Totally professionally, securely, carefully packaged. Styrofoam, bubble wrap, zip ties. Thick, heavy cardboard. Two boxes, a box in a box. All seams taped. Nylon strapping around the outside. You can tell some very bright people spend a lot of time thinking about, designing, and producing the packaging. Not some thrown-together piece parts but a very skillful mix of custom-made packaging components to assure safe shipping.
Now to the scooter. Wow again. This is not a toy. It's a serious piece of transportation equipment. The build quality is outstanding end-to-end. Strong, well-made components throughout. No weak links, no shortcuts. Again, some very smart people must have spent a lot of time designing this scooter. A solid, well-made piece of equipment, not a flimsy toy.
I just took my first test ride this morning for about fifteen minutes. I have ridden the 'Bird' scooters in San Diego and LA and this Glion is in a whole separate league. Much more powerful, much smoother acceleration and braking, much sturdier and sure-feeling. A motorcycle analogy: This is like a refined, sophisticated BMW touring bike compared to yappy little Yamaha dirt bike. Finely engineered and manufactured.
Set-up and take-down are a breeze and the moving parts to do so have a very solid feel to them. It stands upright very nicely, not tippy. Charging is easy and fast.
I've only had this a couple of days but wanted to share first impressions right away. I'll update this review after I've had it a little longer.
UPDATE 6/14/18: I have taken this scooter on a couple of rides now and am very impressed. Acceleration is smooth and powerful and braking is sure and strong.
I tested it mostly on level terrain as that is what will be typical for me. But I did seek out a couple of hills to test climbing ability. I weigh 175 pounds and it had no trouble taking me up a pretty good grade. It slowed down, of course, but kept going. Braking coming down was more than adequate and it gave me peace of mind to know that because the brakes are electromagnetic there would be no fading in effectiveness as can happen with friction brakes. The brakes held nice and steady all the way down and I only needed about half brake power to maintain a safe speed.
The ride is very firm which doesn't matter most of the time. But I did feel pretty abruptly any cracks or ruts in the road. I learned to watch for these and simply flexed my knees a bit more when approaching them. Because the tires are a large diameter, the scooter can take some pretty big cracks and potholes without coming to a sudden stop. I'm happy to trade a firm ride for peace of mind knowing I am not going to get a flat tire miles from home.
My rides were each about an hour. I left with a full charge and the battery meter still had all the green battery bars illuminated when I got back, so the range is going to be very good.
I charge the scooter with an inverter in my van. I have a watt meter and can see it start at about 80 watts and taper throughout the charging process all the way to zero when it is finished. So there is no risk of over-charging.
