My first order for Ableton Live 9 Suite resulted in a major disappointment. After opening the packaging and installing the program, I found that I could not register it because someone else had it on their computer. This sort of thing should not happen. It seems to me unethical to install software and then sell it. So, when I contacted Amazon.com I received an email less than 24 hours later instructing me on how to send the package back. I had already sent for a replacement, costing me about $30 more. Well, I received the second copy which was packed in its original packaging, installed it and registered it with success. The fact that Amazon made good on the error is why I am giving them five stars. As for the software, I am still in the process of learning how to use it; it is, in fact, the software for my Arts Technology class that I am currently taking. But I really do like the program. It is quite versatile and loaded with all sorts of composition possibilities. I plan to use it with Max6 and the included Max4Live in my work.
With no prior knowledge of Ableton it was really hard to get started. It took a while for me to get in the right mind set to figure it out. For example to get a sound from my midi piano you have to select a midi track, arm the track, select a sound for that midi and then you can get a sound. Once you get it you understand it, but it was frustrating for me to get started. That being said once you grasp the program then sky's the limit.
I am still not comfortable but I see the possibility. Its fun just to see all you can do. If this is your first time looking for a DAW and working with one, like me, then I would recommend you find some tutorials to get you going! Your smart, after all your looking at getting this program, it wont take you long to become a master it :)
The book that comes with this is nice to reference when you are getting started. As I was a complete beginner to this type of program, but experienced in audio, it was a little frustrating; like I knew what i wanted to do but couldn't make it do it. To me its **NOT** something that you can master in a day or even a week, with so many options and things you can do, thinking of what you want to do and knowing how to do it in the program is sometimes a challenge to find it. That being said there always seem to be a way!
I've used many DAW's to list a few Sonic Foundries Acid, Sony's Acid, Cubase, Reason before it was a DAW and just something to make beats with, Reaper, and now Ableton Live 9. I think due to my past daw program experience combined with the way things are laid out in Ableton, I'm learning very quickly how to use this program. The sounds are amazing that come with the program and they spark a lot of creativity. I've never spent so much money on a software program, but so far I think it's worth every penny. I'm in love the audio to midi feature.
pre-opened package, and it was obvious immediately. had a bad feeling the serial number would already be registered to a different user, and it was. now i have to return my package and just get a serial number by purchasing directly from the ableton website. Make your life easier, don't buy things like these from amazon. Spend the full amount and just go straight from the provider, this experience has been 100% awful
Extremely powerful software, but complicated and far more than I, and I suspect, most people doing home recording need. If you are creating electronic music using midi, soft synths and even DJing, this may be the best program for you. However if you are looking to record yourself playing instruments and singing there are other programs such as Mixcraft and Reaper which are way less expense, way easier to use and are just as good at recording as Ableton. Mixcraft Pro Studio also includes "tons" of loops and soft synths that are fun to play around and easy to use although they don't have the flexibility of Ableton. I would also suggest checking out FL Studio before spending big buck on Ableton. I'm in no way saying that Ableton is a poor product, just that it is very expensive, very complicated and I think that the vast majority of us musicians would find much less expensive, easier to use programs more than satisfactory.
