Other reviews mention that they needed to sand down the handle. I've not seen the need for it, at least so far... its very smooth.
As far as wooden mallets, in general, they're definitely handy. I used to use a scrap piece of wood and a standard issue hammer to tap things into place when I did not want to scar the work piece. This mallet saves me a bit of trouble.
Good weight for tapping wood chisels.
To those who complain that it split striking a fore or other object, that is not the purpose of the tool. Its a joiners mallet, made for lighting striking a chisel or lightly hammering up tough joints together. When used as intended, I have no doubt it will last and last.
