For $180 these headphones had to be fairly decent for listening to iTunes tracks and watching movies. I cannot comment on the virtual 7.1 because I didn't bother to test it. I am not an audiophile so I really can't give technical details. I just know what sounds good to me and these did not. I like a wide variety of music from classical to hip-hop, techno, 80's, aternative... pretty much everything but country. Lately, I have been listening to a lot of 60's and 70's (Vietnam era) music like the Beatles and Rolling Stones. That's where these headphones failed in my opinion. I am comparing these to other headphones I own - Bowers & Wilkens PX, V-Moda Cross Fade M-100, and Beats Solo 3s. I also own a ROG Centurion 7.1 for desktop gaming (which I love by the way). The Fusion 500's are poorly balanced. The bass is way too overpowering and it doesn't even sound good. The Bower & Wilkens PX don't really produce a lot of bass in my opinion, but that sound good for most everything else. The V-Moda's and Solo 3's produce a lot cleaner, better sounding bass in my opinion. The Fusion 500's have virtually no mid's that I can hear and the highs sound faded and distant. These headphones just sounded really really bad - the sounded really muddy (if that's a thing). If I cannot use these cans for listening to music then they are not worth it at all.
There are a couple of other aspects that I did not like about these headphones. They have terrible sound leakage, whereas the above-named headphones do not. Many times, I will sit in the same room with my wife while she watches television and I will game on my laptop using headphones. I pulled these off and the sound was just blarring out of these things to the extent that it disrupted my wife's ability to listen to the television. Finally, I think they are fairly cheaply built. I just did not like the plastic that makes up the head band. The material from the Centurion 7.1 feels much better and higher quality. The plastic on the 500's feels and looks cheap. I think the Solo 3's are also cheaply built, but I think the sound and battery make up for that to some extent. However, I will say that the 500s were very comfortable to wear for the brief period that I used them.
Others would probably label me an "ASUS fanboy" because I tend to be positively biased toward ASUS products. I really like their aesthetics and most of my PC products are ASUS ROG products - mice (Gladius II & Spatha), keyboard (Horus GK2000 RGB), monitor (PG278Q), motherboard (ASUS ROG Rampage V Extreme), and gaming laptop (G703VI) and multiple other products including backpacks. I was very disappointed with the 500's because I think ASUS really dropped the ball with this product. I would not recommend them for the reasons named above. But again, I did not test them for gaming because the other negatives built up too quickly for me to justify keeping them. With the 500's I feel like ASUS is trying cash in on some of their brand equity and put out a cheaper product for a premium price. I want ASUS to keep making high quality products so I am voting with my wallet against these headphones.
